Kay, I am of the opinion that practical skills such as those spoken about by JAMBO would be very usefull indeed, doctors are also of course needed,(but even though I think that you are associated with the law in some way),lawyers are surplus to requirements, just look at the mess that UK America and the whole of the western world is in,you are frightened to take any actions at all,(just like western politicians! ) in case you are sued for something! Thats not the way to be surley. |

kayjatta, the student cannot choose the course the logistics would be too complicated, i would rather have three courses on offer, then all subjects. as for their interests and abilites, they would play a small part in it, this would be a practicality course. so what subject would you pay. i just want them to have skills that can be useful, no offense to doctors, but when did you last meet a poor electrician or car mechanic. |

I strongly supports Kay's opinion, "let the students follow their bliss". This was one of the main shortcomings of the former Soviet Union, they decided on citizens career paths. This resulted to lots of people who aren't happy with their jobs, leading to laziness, depression and eventual alcoholism. I'd suggest that you create a scholarship fund for technical subjects. Students interested in such courses can apply for sponsorship. |

Of course the student should choose their own way in life! You can advise or encourage, but no one will learn well if they are forced to study something that doesnt interest them.
I have noticed that lot of Gambians, when asked, want CLEAN jobs, ie 'white collar' It is more middle class and more respected.
It was the same in the UK. But in recent years we have realised who has the good holidays? Who has the nice cars? Its the self emloyed plumbers and electricians!
Gambia certainly needs its own trades people rather than relying on other African nationals to do the 'dirty work'.
If I were rich enough I would love to set up a fund to train nursery teachers at Brikama. But I would NEVER NEVER force anyone to do my training course. I think if someone wants to do it , it would be lovely to be able to ease their way into it by helping financially.
I can dream, and buy the lottery ticket. |

please go back to the beginning, i asked what would you like them to study, who said anything about force , i would not dictate what they could study, but it would be on the provision that it is practical course, skills based and not academic. if you offer a scholarship for them to study a subject of their choice, how do you know if it is sustainable . my reason for asking is this, if you set up a scholarship fund for education it has to have parameters, to be for something. bev your suggestion id nursery teaching, why that level because that is where your heart is, but what about secondary level teachers, or university teachers |
