Christian views of abortion
The Catholic church strictly opposes abortion. It sees conception as the moment of life and therefore does not condone abortion under any circumstances at any stage of pregnancy.
The Catholic Church condemned abortion as early as the 2nd century CE: a document called the Didache, written in the 2nd century (some time after 100 CE.), states: "You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish".
The Church of England shares the Roman Catholic view that abortion is 'gravely contrary to the moral law' and encourages its community to think very seriously about this issue, but allows it in certain limited circumstances.
The main permissable circumstance is when the mother's life would be under risk if the pregnancy was allowed to continue. It also allows for a pregnancy to be terminated on account of a serious foetal disability. In the case where the abnormality is serious enough to cause a very short life for the child, the Church of England even allows termination past the 24 week mark.

For those who can't find this book, you can download free the book by the same author, Dr. Bilal Philips, called "Contemporary Issues", from this link. The book includes Abortion and many practical issues of today. Many other books and audio/video of lectures can be downloaded free there, too. |

Many Catholics in Ireland travel to England for abortions. It is sad that the women are so desperate, but sad also that their religion is so inflexible.
In America there is a powerful lobby group against abortion, much more so than in Europe. So USA is perhaps not so free as northern europe on this issue. |

In the UK during 2004 there were - 185,400 abortions. During 2005 for teenagers only 39,099
I'll have a more detailed look at that website at later. Initially I thought it was very interesting with the variations & detailed. I have used it before. Initially I thought we were referring to The Gambia. sab. |

Those links were intended only as a guide to some religious views on this issue. But since you brought up the question of those statistics... The Church of England has stated that the number of abortions in the UK is unacceptable, however, the Church has very limited power because England is a secular country. |
