Why is it when arriveing in Banjul you have to go thru a security baggage check having all ready done it at your departing airport. After a long tireing journey this exta hassle is not the welcome people are expecting to thier first experience and maybe thier last of the Smiling Coast

Well , i guest they have to make sure what you are bringing into their country. It will be naive for them to be satisfied by the scrutiny at your departing airport. It is appropriate for them to do their own part. This is the post-911 world. Did you try to travel within U.S. Snuggels ? |

i don't mind the check, but just wish they wer better organised, when 5 planes arrive in one day, you could seriously loose it. also the staff have such an attitude, don't tel l them you have two phones because they will want a TAX |

snuggels, Is it not the Custom officials who go through all baggage when entering a foreign country? They can go through your loggage if you have or have nothing to declare. This prosidure is normal in all countries. What Do you think? In the Gambia you have to identify you loggage after checking in. This does not happen in the EU for example. |

I have never had my bags searched entering a country except Gambia. This is so they can 'tax' electrical goods, or steal them from you.
Customs officials search at random when returning home to UK. Spot checks for smuggled goods.
The system in Gambia is not good. They cant cope with the numbers of people and the space is very small and hot. Every time I think I will faint!
Perhaps it would be better if they just spot checked a few and let the others through? Some people have decided never to return to Gambia just because of the hassle at the airport before they even see the country. |

Alhassan, they stopped the procedure of having to go out onto the tarmac and identify your luggage around six/seven years ago. Many a time did I see luggage left there next to the tables - whereby people did not know they had to go outside with their keys for another strong-arm rummage through the contents!
The same goes for arrivals - no more identify your luggage in groups of twenty from the small area of sand & then onto the tables - they have two carousel since opening the new terminal...Plus they have scanners. Although the old Nissen-type buildings still remain, next to the new control tower. regards, sab.

YES GAMBIA BEV, I AGREE. THEY GO THROUGH OUR BAGS TO LOOK FOR MOBILE PHONESAND ELECTRICAL GOODS, CHARGING 250 DALASI FOR MOBILE PHONES AND 1000 DALASI FOR DVD PLAYERS ! I WISH THEY WOULD PUT A NOTICE UP SAYING WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR AND THE TAX YOU ARE EXPECTED TO PAY IT IS NOT A GOOD WELCOME !

Exactly. I think you should be informed before entering the country what the taxes on such goods are, then you can decide whether to bring them. I am not bringing mobiles to profit, but to give to nursery teachers etc....They are given to me by charitable friends. It is very off putting. |

The security officers could be corrupt sometimes, but the issue of physical search is not peculiar to The Gambia. I was once on transit in Belgium (Brussels) i think it was terminal 27 or so almost all those in that terminal were Africans, the customs officer physical searched our bags in the rudest manner wit disdain, despite being Gov't senior civil servants from The Gambia. That was the rudest intrusion in my hand-lagauge i have ever experienced despite being in Europe. Their prob was any blackman was possibily an illegal immigrants or asylum seeker. I have been physical searched also in Abidjan en route to South Africa. So this not a problem with a MADE IN THE GAMBIA label. |

sab, I was in the Gambia in January and was back again in June. After the checking in I was called at the end of the room to identify my loggage. In fact peoples names are announced over the megaphone to go and indentify their loggage. Mybe I was the only one to go through this proccess. Otherwise I can agree that the space the custom officials have is too small. Some of the experiences mentioned here are strange to me. |

ALHASSAN, it is not all countries that go through a personal search of luggage, lets be clear this is about MONEY, and not SECURITY |

Yes, if it was for security and properly handled no one would object.
Uk and American security have both increased. But noone asks for mobiles or money as you pass through the airport systems. |

jambo, I have never been asked for money or mobile phones. I think they were joking. I would not take them seriously. |
