Alhassan, when i travel into the Gambia together with my Gambian man i am never asked for anything. When i was travelling alone in order to visit him in the past i was always asked for money or mobile (or got an invitation to dinner). I never gave them anything and always got off with a joke or two. The idea to call out people at random to check the luggage when you leave the country again together with the customs officer, is not a bad one. Only once, i truly did not hear my name being called. A very angry customs officer came into the ground floor bar calling my name and gave me a rather rude talking-to with everybody staring at me. |

No they were not joking, ask other members of the bantaba if they have not been asked to pay some money for phones or electrical equipment, We who have travelled can say no, but new commers are in for a shock. |

The security officers could be corrupt sometimes, but the issue of physical search is not peculiar to The Gambia. I was once on transit in Belgium (Brussels) i think it was terminal 27 or so almost all those in that terminal were Africans, the customs officer physical searched our bags in the rudest manner wit disdain, despite being Gov't senior civil servants from The Gambia. That was the rudest intrusion in my hand-lagauge i have ever experienced despite being in Europe. Their prob was any blackman was possibily an illegal immigrants or asylum seeker. I have been physical searched also in Abidjan en route to South Africa. So this not a problem with a MADE IN THE GAMBIA label.
In Belgium, everyone used to said this, they just don't like blacks, we don't have good label here. |

Hmmm, I never had any bigger problems at airport in Gambia, maybe because I always let some of the guys working there to take my trolley out and put a big and happy smile on my face Or maybe I just look too poor But of course I´m prepared and put some sensitive women stuff on the top of all my bags |
