Toubab1020,
I would suggest that it is the Gambians to be blamed. Today the cost of empty plot is very high depending where in the greater Banjul ares especially. Sometimes it could be the competetion that has been at home. IE One person owns 10 plots and the other one nothing. The other case is the drug sellers who go back home to bluff their people. I remembered some years ago when you negiociate for the cost of a plot, a brother who lives in the west and has the drug moneys pay very high prices. I was even offerd once to sell my land at the costal road which I turned down.
Nearly every Gambian(not all)wants to show off his neighbours his material belongings. The competetion and the demand withn the greater Banjul area is the problem.

Thanks Alhassan, for once I agree totally with your posting, but these things seem to be the norm now and I suspect that noting can be done.

One of the problems can be he fact that as itīs written in the article, the wealthy buisness tycoons are not willing to let opcoming buiness men/women in the heat. The rich is getting richer by the secound which means the poor is geting poorer. Gambian dont wannea give other gambians opportunity to get anywhere not even within the family, we are selfish.
I have a cousin who is an electrician and my other cousinīs mother whos is the electricianīs motherīs younger sister asked te electrician to teach her son amd he sain no in her face. Within a short periode of time the electrician starts to teach his brother whp was just a kid at the time. If he had taught my other audlt causin he would be havin his own income by now

Yes, it is very unfortunate that most of us Gambians have a "Jelous" streak in us, this of course stiffles any form of improvement to the country,Gambian tradesmen are very reluctant to teach other Gambians their skills, fearing perhaps that the "new boy" will turn out to be a better tradesman than the "master" who may well lose work, and sorry to say there is still the Tribal aspect where too many Gambians think of themselves as Fulas,Jola, or whatever first, instead of thinking themselves as Gambians first. In Europe it is different in the fact that the "master" gets a great deal of pride from imparting his skills to a new person,so then you have two people who can do a good job,if you are not good enough then you don't get the job.Answer always do a good job at a fair price and you will never be out of work.

I think there should be made a housing law working for both sides.
When I talk to gambians most of them say to have no trust at all in other Gambians because they always try to cheat you.
they say they will rent a house but then stop paying rent and even destroy your house and then refusing to leave. it will take a long time to get this people out of your house. A lot of houseowners that I know tell me they prefer an empty house for a long time then a rented house for a short time when they are not sure to get the payment.
if you make a law that on one hand forbids deposits from more then a months rent and on the other hand gives police the power to evict renters after not paying rent for a month the problem will be solved
You see the same problem very strong in the tourist areas, I think that more then 70% of the houses in Kotu and Kololi are empty, Gambian rich owners only want to rent them on a yearly basis, you only need to check the Gambian real estate site and shops to see that I tell the truth.
i myself rent houses to tourists for one week upto a couple of months and I have so many people that I have to disapoint, there are just no short term rent houses enough to be found

Super idea,I find that so much has been given to the tenant, who quite often dosn't pay that landlords/houseowners prefer to leave their houses empty rather than have trouble with people who rip them off.ONE month no pay,go to court get eviction order which the police should be able to help you with.

Forget about the police in rent issues. The Rent Tribunal is responsible for such issue, but then .....
