Foroyaa Editorial 1994 – 2007 WHAT TYPE OF GAMBIA IN 13 YEARS?
In another two years President Jammeh will be in office for 15 years. This will be equivalent to half the number of years ex president Jawara has been in office.
It is important for every concerned person to ask: What type of Gambia did the Jammeh regime inherit and what type of Gambia is being built? Are the future generations secure?
Contrary to all the claims that the Gambia is a jewel of Africa, the government has acknowledged universally that Gambia is a Heavily Indebted Poor Country, HIPC. The Jammeh regime inherited a Heavily Indebted Poor Country 13 years ago and is still managing a Heavily Indebted Poor Country until today. If one were to share a 22,000 million dalasis debt among the Gambian population each will carry a burden of 15,000 dalasis. Economists should now focus on per capita debt burden as an indicator of growing poverty.
In short, a growth in the debt burden leads to the allocation of a substantial part of the funds meant for social service to service the debts.
Hence, as we count the number of new schools we must never forget that multi grade teaching and double shift is what has made it possible for half the number of school goers to have places in schools and teachers.
How this affects quality education is still a matter of debate. Suffice it to say, learning materials are scarce. Libraries are non existent in major population centres like Serrekunda and so on.
At the senior secondary level, government schools comprise 12% of the institutions established as senior secondary schools. The cost of education in these high schools is posing as the limit to access to high school education by the poor.
In terms of roads, the most recent statistics reveal that only 20% of roads in the country are paved.
In terms of health, a dose of choloroquine, aspirin and B complex cost 1/10 of the earnings of an uncertificated teacher.
A trip from Serrekunda to Banjul on a daily basis would consume 60% of the salary of an uncertificated teacher.
A farmer travelling from Basse to Serrekunda, to and fro, would spend 400 dalasi which is almost the salary of a messenger. Hence, the cost of living is escalating to unsustainable proportions. As the APRC commemorates July 22 they should ask how many teachers eat meat as a meal, a kilo of which is above the daily earnings of a qualified nurse or teacher.
As long as hardship is increasing there is no cause for celebration.

| A pertinent question indeed. Is Gambia a better nation under Jammeh or have we slided down the annals of anarchy? Can Gambians see their country as for the future or immigration is on every youth's mind?.As for the jewel of Africa, only the Observer can say that.We are miles from achieving such a feat.Zimbabwe was once said to be that, yet the country was entrenching itself in unnoticed dictatorship,at least from his supporters.Yes,Gambia is seemingly stable in the midst of a region with endless coup & scars of war.But during our "peace",were the people really peaceful in their thoughts?Gambia deserves better. |

In 13 years of evil and terror meted to Gambians by a callous preseident Yahya Jammeh, it is one of great national sorrow and grief to be reminded of such event like July 22 in our history. Gambians have been robbed of honour, decency, morals, wealth, hope, peace, and tranquility. We now have fear, killings, decadence, suspicion, thuggery, stealing by political position, and ruins. This sad for a nation to celebrate an illegal event. |

| In my opinion this is a 13 years of mischief, social retrogression, human brutalisation, human killing and illegal indefinite detention. In 13 years yahya Jammeh has succeeded in dividing and creating suspicion among Gambians, tribalism, nepotism and political favouritism is the order of the day.Gambians today are going through political hell, they are living in fear and insecurity. The civil servants under the Jammeh regime are ten times corrupt than during ppp days.Poverty has today ripped most Gambians off their selfesteem. The gambian farmers have loose hope in agriculture as a result of lack of market for their produce, they are heavly disappointed. The police has institutionalised bribery in their daily duties. The post office staff are scounging for international mails, the market vendors are ripped off of taxes which never reach the Government.Youths in their frustration has taken illegal migration, crime and drug abuse as the way out, members of paliament are glue mouthed for fear of their position, even though they are elected, judges in courts have blantantly bend the law to safe their positions, doctor are smuggling drugs out of hospitals for their private chemists.Teachers are ill-motivated and quality of education is extremely poor.private bussiness men got no choice but to abstain from importation due government interfering. So what is APRC celebrating? |

| The Gambia is not just better today than 13 years, but its a honeymoon in comparison to the 30 years of so called independence and republic under nightmarish jawara. We should not forget the days of our Independence and republic but the anticipation of the 22nd july is also a show of appreciation to the better place it made The Gambia. I stand to congradulate H.E. Jammeh for his archievement and wishes him a happy anniversary. |

Bread man,
I doubt, if you not Jammeh himself!!! Anyway, you making my heart bleed and i believed that of many other sincere Gambians who may come across your views stated herein. You may be right July 22 1994, with all it's illegalities as it sound was somehow accepted at the time but think twice now and evaluate the general conditions average Gambians are facing at this juncture. There is nothing more to add to Dembish's account. These are undeniable facts. Every single citizen in the Gambia wants development but not at this price. You are trying hard just like the regime itself to make us believe in something that is not true. |

sister sibo , let him defend his corner ,we cannot all see things the same. in every part of the world people never agree .but i hope breadman will only acknowledge some of yahya's misdeeds .but if breadman continue to take a line like that of sister omega by trying hard to use tribal sentiment in support of yahya then i will ceased to engage in debate with him .let us see the gambia as no one person's property and let us accept the reality of things. even the bullying of business men alone in the gambia is a bad system by yahya let alone ,the paranoia .he is a totalitarian . |

Sibo...What criteria you use which made OGA, PABII, Jammeh not earning your respect. Can you substantiate more please.
Santa... This pic is Jammeh in his most desirable fatique, on the front are the mortars, left side the AKs and right the human skeletons of murdered soldiers and school children. In his hand is a paper reading the proposals as how to carry out the operations. |
