I have been sick and tired of Nderry Mbai's "jotali". I decided to do something about it:fact check his stories whenever I have some time to spare out of my busy schedule. I am not for any kind of censorship. I abhor infringement of speech. However I am also a firm believer in the anecdote that say: to whom much is given, much is expected.
Nderry has a huge platform from which he can do a lot of positive things. Granted, there are people who might enjoy his tabloidy form of jotali. fact free and all. Attacking people ad nauseum with out any regards whatsoever to the validity of his claims or what the repercussions of his allegation might be on the victims isn't journalism. It is irresponsible and has ruin the livelihood of many innocent Gambians to date.
Every time someone raise this topic, his defenders will yap about his free speech rights. However they will have to concede the point that with free speech comes responsibility. Furthermore, I have not come across any of Nderry's critics who want to curtail his fundamental rights to speech. What gets under our collective nerve is his penchant for sensation and shooting from the hip fact be damned.
His erstwhile colleagues are now saying the exact same things. Sour grapes? Maybe, but the timing stinks to high heavens. The latest victim of Nderry's vindictiveness isn't laying low. He is hitting back and I for one is getting my popcorn ready to watch this match. Yankuba Darbo, alias Yank: who until recently has associate editor under his bylines has a score to settle with nderry. His first installation is posted at Senegambianews: http://www.senegambianews.com/article.cfm?articleID=1803
He promised his readers to subsequent installments on this nderry character. Finally someone will be hitting him where it hurts: his personal life. Now lets see how he likes that kind of free speech.

| Save me a seat and some of the pop corn pal! I will be watching this fight as well. Some one said it here rightly, "Teri kuya kulo wanyaro." I have said it here on numerous occasions that this man (NDERRY)is a not only a mockery of the profession of journalism, but the lowest standards of human decency. This is almost becoming a weekly occurence...first it was Jambang, then Jawara, and now Darboe. |

Gambianpatriot.
I am not a defender of his paper. But i will also say that he has a right to freespeech.
The very reason why i support free spech is that it allows others like Yanks to speak up. Free speech is for everyone otherwise we will not hear the other side of the story. So let free speech ring from the hills of Yoro Bawol to the low lands of Sanneh mentereng.
To try to deny others free speech is to be a dictator. There are two sides to a coin.
Lets buy more pop corn and watch and read and celebrate free speech that is very strange and new to many of us. |

Kondorong, I didn't say he has no right to free speech. In fact I said I abhor any infringement on anyone's right to speech. So I have no qualms with that whatsoever. However I do believe nderry is unethical in most of the trash he publish. That is me exercising my free speech right as well. If you have no qualms with nderry's garbage, you shouldn't be concerned about my criticism of it. Free speech indeed...

You are right Gambianpatriot. You have a right to freespeech which you MUST ENJOY. However, your right to free speech must not muzzle others' free speech too. Like the mandinka say: NYO KANA SOSO FAA, SOSO KANA NYO FAA.
Thats all i stand for. Let freespeech ring from every corner of the world. Divergent views help build a critical mass in a society. So gambianpatriot, i will be the first person to defend you if any one wants to deny you free speech. You have a right to say what you want so does anyone.
This is where i come from. I take no sides. If his articles are garbage, then prove him wrong, but please allow him to respond. Remember there are three types of truth: Your truth, my truth and the truth.
Unfortunately, in real life, the truth is still what we all are looking for and cant find. So why not let others also speak hopefully we mind find the REAL TRUTH and not our truths.

| I dont believe free speech is the main argument here. Rather it is decency and ethics, which Pa Nderry lacks in all respects. Ones freedom ends where others start. Pa Nderry is not exercising freedom of speech, he is engaging in slander, lies, innuendo and character assasination. Let us not confuse free speech and slander. This man has no place in journalism. |

Mansasulu, I think you are right in your assessment of the issue been discussed. Kondorong is confusing people criticizing nderry's behavior with muzzling him.Nothing could be further from the truth.Heck nderry has a bigger platform than me. How in the world will I be able to infringe on his free speech rights? Kondorong keeps harping back to his free speech lecture as if I ever said I am trying to stop nderry from publishing. Press critics are all over the world. Do Kondorong wanna tell me they are trying to muzzle the press? To the contrary they are in the business of keeping the fourth estate in line.
For the sake of sanity: mr. Kondorong, I am NOT trying to infringe on nderry's right to free speech. |

| Guys, freedom of speech is a great good - but it has just one disadvantage: someone might voice an opinion you don't want to hear. But then again: you'll have the freedom to enter into a discussion and lay bare the lies, if any. |

anna ,you know what ,if i didn't give my last cow to my wife i would give it to alpha kondo for his defense of free speech .yes ,pa is some times off key ,but so are the government mouth piece .the grts ,and daily observer. all they engage in all day long is how great jilanka is .we are fade up about that. that kind of poilitics should be burried. let him do what he is elected for and leave the independent press. any time you see gambia unpatriot is only attacking the independent media .why ? why don't you tell us the nonsence that the daily observer is peddling ? why don't you tell us how poor the grts news is ? all you do from forum to forums is just telling people what they already know about pa. pa is reacting to the unfavourable conditions back home. yes some gambians are happy to go back for vacations and behave as if every thing is ok and then come back to base as normal .this is the attitude that create unrest. speak for the voiceless .speak for the oppress .things are not normal out there. we will do our best to expose yahya at every given opportunity and pa should do his bit .he need reminding of the noble profession of journalism but at the end of the day he is talking about government officials. |

You are right again gambianpatriot.
You have a right to respond to my views and ofcourse interprete things through your own understanding. Yu see without free speech we may never be able to understand each other.
One Greatman once defined patriotism as "BEING LOYAL TO ONE'S COUNTRY ALL THE TIME AND TO YOUR GOVERNMENT WHEN THEY DESERVE IT".
One man's meat is another man's poison. So lets celebrate free speech. Who among us has been appointed as the custodian of decency. What is descent in one society is not in another.
Do you know that in Moso Land, women infact marry many men. How would such a thing be seen in the Gambia forexample where men marry many women. So i dont need a lecture on decency mansasulu. Like the wolof say: KU RACHA TAYE SA KANAM |

Santa, I am not holding fort for Daily Observer or GRTS. I think they are propaganda organs of a dictatorial regime. They are only accountable to the Kanilai mansa. Having said that, it is necessary, even prudent that those struggling to see a better government emerge in the Gambia post yahya practice ethical forms of journalism. The opposition should set a higher standard of professionalism. Anything goes ain't gonna make things better.
Kondorong:
Nobody has been appointed custodian of decency and neither is anyone appointed the free speech police. We all hold free speech sacred so lets get past the lecture..deal? |

Free speech is not just about expressing nice things , it is also about the right to express "garbage" as well. Santa you got it right "terri kuya..." I am suprised that D A Jawo , Ebrima Sillah and Sheriff Bojang are all in Senegal , I didn't know that. Wow , Gambia. |

You are right kayjatta
Free speech is not about sugarcoating news. Its also about the good, bad and the ugly. Just like Democracy is not just about the right to associate with any party, its also about the right to not associate in the first place.
Gambian patriot
Please see the posting below by mansasulu. He was talking about decency. He seems to have appointed himself as the Vice Police
"I have said it here on numerous occasions that this man (NDERRY)is a not only a mockery of the profession of journalism, but the lowest standards of human decency. This is almost becoming a weekly occurence...first it was Jambang, then Jawara, and now Darboe"
Mansasulu,
What new levels of human decency have you now come up with and what authority do you have in determining what is decent or not and what is low or high interms of morale.
You see, you are judging him from your own experiences in life and for Gods sake, you cannot clone everyone to be like you. Lets celebrate free speech and i must admit i have learnt some new things from the discussions which i would not ordinarily have learnt had we all towed the same line.
LETS CELEBRATE FREE SPEECH.
