Cherno Baba taken to task on history of Basse. The author Momodou Baldeh responded with a full challenge. Baldeh & Jallow, thank you both. I don't know how to take sides here. I am Jallow, and from my mother side, Bah/Baldeh.

I personally enjoyed both pieces. Hopefully, many will contribute to it, and we will me ready about Basse's history.

I think i know this Momodou baldeh. He studied French and used to work for the African Commission on Human Rights(NGO) just around the Peace Corps Office. The last time i heard about him, he was in France. If he is reading this posting, i will remind him of a someone named Boido in his family.
I agree entirely with his posting because there are historical evidences in what he said especially about Governor Denton. |

Kons;
It might be the same Baldeh. Many of them are from Mansajang. I will forward your thread to him.
I am the least versed with Basse's history. May be you can add some lines for us. Thank you while there is time.
All i can tell you is that it gets really hot. You can boil an egg on a sunny weather. True or false????

Below is a brief explanation of the word Mansajang and Santosu from Mo. Baldeh. Hope that helps...
Courtesy of Gainako
Mansajang Baldeh's real name was Hoggo. He had been named Mansajang after a friend of his father's in the Kantora District. It is this name that became more popular; although most of his family members called him Hoggo throughout his life.
Some people tend to think that because he was a chief, "mansa" and he may have been tall (which he was), "jang", hence the name Mansajang. This is an incorrect assumption.
As you may know, Basse as it is known today is a melting pot... a lot of Guinean Fulas, some Mandinkas, some Toorankas, the Awlube and some Sarahules. It has an area called Santo-Su, just as it has an area called Angal Fuuta. I don't therefore think it is out of place to have an area called Santo-Su if Mandinkas were among the early settlers, although there may be more details to this than I readily know.
I noticed that Brikama has an area that is also known as Santo-Su or we can also ask a similar question about Latrikunda German. I would like to think that in the course of ethnic interaction some settlements picked up names that associated certain ethnic groups to certain areas.

Courtesy of Gainako…??
Thank you for your explanation.
Mansajang Baldeh = Hoggo. “He had been named Mansajang after a friend of his father's in the Kantora.” Why is the village not named Sareh Mansajang, Sareh Hoggo (Sareh Bojo, Sareh Alpha) or Baldeh Kunda (Maneh Kunda, Dampha Kunda) but Mansajang Kunda?
In mandingka is Basse Tenda
Tenda have two meanings; 1) A trading centre 2) Teng da da = to make palm; could be wine, Palm leafs/branches made into carpets, fans, baskets etc.
Most of the mandingka shop owners in the area come to do business in Basse and go home in the evenings to Mansajang Kunda, Maneh Kunda, Koba Kunda, Kabakama, Dampha Kunda etc, etc.
Latrikunda German is a German resident Angal Fuuta is a name adapted as recent as in the mid 80´s. I think the name was made by the youth of the area. Mandingka Kunda is an area where the majority is mandingka. Santo Suo has more to do with the landscape, lowland and highland, in Basse the lowland is around the river with the rice fields and Santo su a retreat mostly in the rain season. Thus the difference between Santo su and Mandingka kunda, Santo su and Mandingka Kunda can’t replace each other.
The deconstruction of the name of a place is very complex therefore no stones should be left unturned, if not one ends up with an “on the surface” narration.
Your explanation is palatable but inconclusive as to the derivation of Santo su and Mansajang Kunda. |

Janko, thanks for the rejoinder. To be honest I am not a student of history. I am more of business oriented and was my specialty in college. So you can see that all I see is numbers and how you make sales and influence political decisions in favor of the business environment.
I understand your explanation and think I should leave the history to the historians. One thing I know though, names can be really confusing. It is like adopting a street, naming someone after someone famous. They can really be misterous especially in our culture. Whatever the source or reasoning behind the names I don't think it is the most important.
Anyway, we urge all students of history to give us anything significant in the history of our nation. It is important that we educate the younger generation about the history of our nation. Please send anything you deep relevant to editor@gainako.com. It is crucial that we document and capture this information for future reference. What say you? |

/---/whatever the source or reasoning behind the names I don't think it is the most important./---/
In this deconstruction, the reasoning behind the name Basse is the focal point, the point of departure and therefore the most important aspect of the narration.
Both articles on Basse's history in Gainako agree on the depiction and derivation of the name Basse. But none explained how the name Mansajang and Santo su came about.
My point of observation is the formula/theory used in depicting the name, Basse. According to the articles “basse” is the plural form of “bassal” and the explanation that follows reminds one of the relationships between “bang julo” and “Banjul" (the capital of Gambia). The interesting difference is Banjul takes the singular form of Banjulo whiles Basse takes the plural form of Bassal and yet both are names of places derived from common nouns. Normally when a common noun changes to a proper noun it takes the singular form unless a prefix is added ex. Sareh Basse, Gainako (singular form as a name) and not Gainakobé (the plural form) but it is correct to say “Sareh Gainakobé”.
Lastly, bassal and basse could also mean the lack of or poverty. In my opinion there is no evaluation of the sources in the articles. The historical documents have not been critically evaluated rather taken as undisputable facts.
My point is a “taken for granted” historical depiction without a solid foundation should not be passed on to our children for it could land them in difficulties in the feature. It is our duty to pass on to our children our history as much as it is our duty to clarify the difference between historical facts and personal views.
Is it possible that both authors are seeing the tree and not the forest?

Janko & Baldeh,
Good debate. I was too occupied to post on it. I couldn't have had in any way, since i only visited Basse once in a life time, and not familiar with it's history. But Demba seems to be versed in it, and to act as a laison between the debating parties and the readers. Janko, the debating parties are debating more on your important points. You are more than welcome to expand the scope of the debate at Gainako.
Mansa-jang, in mandinka meaning a 'tall king' mansa-sutung, 'short king' mansa-nyamatoo, 'mad king'
by the end of this debate, we would have successfully placed 'Huggo" Baldeh aka Mansa-jang on the map.
Keep up the debating spirit!

Basse's history continues
The two are on it. It is a likeable debate, typical Gambian. Gainako welcomes other commentators.

Basse is an old town and my fear is the pre-colonial history may be deemed by the post-colonial verson, which would be throwing the baby with the birth water.
I would answer to the invitation if given a space
"mansa-nyamatoo", 'mad king'
What about the meaning of
Mansa Kallabanté

Apparently, i have read the travels of Mungo Park in 1789, but no mention was made of the town of Basse. He live in Pisania, which is just 15 miles from Bansang for six months learning the local languages before embarking on his journey into the interior. He passed through Wuli.
Could Basse have existed before 1789 or did it have another name then.
This is interesting. |

Wuuuuu, Janko, I can't stand the laugher. The floor is yours. You have an equal stake. Don't even feel you have to be accorded, feel you have to take.
Would Mansa kalabante' equate mansa kurunyoo, like Yaya Jammeh???
I was just wondering!!
Have a great day! |
