many who follow the history of Manding would find out a very complete cultural empire and people. the cultures where so rich and diverse the jalis or griouts couldn't handle every task assigned to them by there mansas .
one such event history recorded was an incident between the Mansa and his brave son .they said the son was so brave that the jalis would by-pass the mansa himself to glamour the praises specially for the son. this didn't go down well with the king or mansa of manding. so one day all the chiefs gathered in a big place to commemorate an event in manding. now i cannot specifically say what event it was. as usual the Jalis where in center of the occassion.the jalis as usual have a lead singer or head of the group who will handle most of the days earnings and gift accorded on them.the jalis where so busy heaping praises on the mansa's son they say what was traditionally reserve for the mansa.

the jalis overwhelme by the mansa's son candour and majestic they forgot the cadinal principle of the manding culture , they use the phrase JATTA .why is jatta so significant to the people of manding ? well jatta is lion .so if you now call a son the lion infront of his father what do you call the father then ? as soon as this statement was otered the head of the jalis collapse. in those days it meant humiliation to the mansa calling his son jatta whilst he is still alive.
now they said the king was calm but very angry . he ordered the head of the jalis to compose a word or phrase that most sopass Jatta if not they will all go to lakira or he will kill all of them ( the jalis i mean ) . i will stop here for now .but one question to any one who may want to quess what happen next .where the jalis or griouts able to satisfy the mansa's condition in coining a word better pleaseing than jatta ? let the jali members try .
i thank you .

In traditional manka homes, heads of families never give up auhority even on their dead bed. Only when they die can one can take decisions. "KANG" (meaning authority) is not anything to be takn laightly in Manding.

The worst humiliation for a manding man is to deny him his authorty of office which he would rather you take his life than sit by and be commanded.

Infact in one incident during the battle of Kansala, it was told that women and children threw themselves in wells and committed mass sucide than fall in the hands of the Fulas as slaves. It was told that the wells were so full of bodies that people still piled on top of each other above ground just so they could die.

Mandinka is from two mandinka words combined. Can anyone guess?

you may wish to take this into consideration, as i tried to point out in another posting. i think mandinka is more of an english word or gambian english. i guess the people call themselves manding'nkos (meaning people from manding). so this has become in english manding'kas.

sometimes in english it is even written mandingos.

similarly in english we write Wollof but the people call themselves 'Ollofs' and their homeland more like Jollof.

You are right.

Its MAN DINGKA. Its a fusion of the phrase: A MANG DINKA. Naturally what it means that the tribesmen do not hide their feelings and will make you know where they stand. Diplomacy is very rare and pretending is almost certainly not in existence.

Njuks

Mandingo is an American version of Mandingka. You are also right that they call themselves manding Nko. Infact in Banjul NKO is usually used to mean a mandinka especially if they dont want you to know who they are referring to.

i will proceed . i didn't here any jali saying alaleka jaliyadah
on the issue at hand. the jalis gathered themself together discussing the huge task at hand. they have always heard an easy ride when it comes to praising the mansa and his household but on this occassion things fall apart. the head of the lead jali is on the line.they debated for hours to coin a more fitting tribute to the king but no one could remember any in there vocabulary.
in every gathering there most be some one who is very less opinionated and usually this types of individuals safe the day in many deadlock meetings. and not surprisingly a man whose jaliya qualities is very poor interupt the lead singers and heads of the gathering by saying '' let call the mansa WUULA .people look at each other comtemplating what was just said. suddently ,the quiet man became a hero. yes wuula was choosen for the mansa. the lead praise singer came forward to the king saying '' jatta warata nyawo wo nyanding akela wuula lekono '' howeverr big and brave a lion might be it is still in the forest .so wuula means forest or jungle .the lion finds safety in the jungle or forest so the king is the protector of his own son .and however galant his son might be still he is under the fathers sphere of control. the jalis became freed .wuulaba became a famous jali song.

kondo , i was just last week having a nice conversation with a brikama friend of mine .from njie kunda. he married a wolof lady. now he told me when he visit his inlaws in senegal ,there is very little formality. he also said '' some of his father inlaws other son inlaws will come freely into the house to talk at lengt about many things without usual shyness of being in the present of the inlaws. he said the difference between a wolof father inlaws and a mandinka or fulla father inlaw is that , a wolof father inlaw will be very relaxing and less formal . he will never say any thing bad about his daughter. but a mandinka father inlaw might be frank about his daughters odd behaviour. he may say to his son inlaw be careful of her she doesn't like waking up early ,things like that. i couldn't substanciate any of his conversation since i never marry a wolof lady to experience the difference.what i know for sure is that mandinka and fula tradition believe in too much formality. taken off of shoes ,speaking in low voice ,no eye contact etc when in presence of parents in laws. the wolof tradition may be less rigid or formal .i don't know. kondo can you say any thing on this issue. thanks.

brother mbye , may be a long long time ago the mandinka could have some connection to inka people. there is also a big tribe in sudan call the DINKAS .this people fought with sudanise government for more than 20 years. i listin to them speak .but i could not make any connection to mandingo language. also the fulbe looking people of ethopia and somalia are a close call to our genuea ,senegal and gambia fullas but again the language is totally different. even the mandinka moris in liberia ,sierra leon ,ivory coarst ,genuea conakry ,bukina faso ,mali have some major language difference with our gambian mandinka . there are some similar words and phrases but many differences.
the Dinka tribe can be found in southern sudan .the former rebel leader john karan wasn't a dinka that was why it was easy to eliminate him since the dinkas believe that karan was using them all along and they are the fighters for the lebaration movement. when karan died his deputy a dinka became the vice president of sudan and the war between north and south was over. then the darfu comflict was ignited mysteriusly.

Bro Santa:
I join you in this your wise way of explanation.
i had follow smiler stories of one Massina(Mali)storyteller that they families are scattered from Ethiopia to Tanzania coming down to Uganda to Guinea .
Like We Serahouleh mostly believing from Ghana but to go more deeply in history then one will come conclusion that we are more likely from that areas of Eastern regions including Ethiopia/Sudan,

So since we are all more relatives your point seems getting the fact.
Thanks and come with more if you have.

And what about the Western storyteller (the Scientist)that First Human seems coming from Ethiopia

mbye , the soninke (sarahule) where known to be arround ghana end and also in songhai . i was even told by some historians that askia muhammad touray was a sarahule but alpha kondo earlier on corrected me. so sarahules where also in arround kabu. do you remember the history of Nkaling sonko ? he raided a sarahule fortress single handedly and held some of them captives and he demanded they pay tax to the king of kabu mama janky wali sanneh. so sarahules are an illustrous tribe . they usually intermarry with the jahankas for reason better known to both tribes. some will deny that the jahankas are a sperate tribe but they act that way any way.

the real origin of the sarahules may be difficult to say but they are powerful in mali ,genuea and that end. they usualy like narrating the history of Bundu .you may be familiar with that story. i will take a swipe at you though ,the sarahules levy a heavy price for marrying there daugters some times in region of thausands .so many poor people may find it hard to marry a sarahule girl.

ylowe , you are right . you have given me an idea . the language which askia muhammad was speaking may pin-point his tribe. i don't know if askia is sarahule or not but i will find out from people of mali. askia muhammad was a military commander ,so when the king was misrulling he took the rulership of songhai so the people where shouting 'he can't be king '' because rulership then was through succession not the ballot box .may be jammeh denasty will try introducing that to the small finger of africa .
