By what the Daily Observer carried, the pro government daily now openly states that Senegal is out to oust the Jammeh regime. Here is what the Daily Observer had on what they believe Senegal is doing to Gambia.

hmmmmmm

NIYA MOI HUNG, A SUNG KANTA LEH

I am not a political science student, but this article is food for thought. It shows the psyche of those in the corridors of power. Such an article must have had a prior approval before publication.

Is it an indication of uneasiness. Like the Nigerian proverb "uneasiness lies the head that wears the crown." For the Observer to publish this, i will certainly take it as sanctioned.

Lets pray for peace because as the Yoruba say, when one finger is dipped in palm oil, it soils the rest of the fingers.

I thought the editorial was not underestimated by many. I am totally disappointed, in addition to the crap we are used to seeing on this paper. The other of the two, “Dakar is wrong” was another blunder. For one bit, I was at vomiting point when famous star Youssou Maa’ Ghigain was tainted in the above article. What does Youssou’s guarding of his status has to do with the alleged political differences between Gambia & Senegal?

While I am in no position to authenticate Sajar’s coordinated smear against the people of Senegal, I don’t doubt the frustration of an oppressed people. Whatever is cooking in the area, I hope it is good food that Gambians can digest without having scratches on our throats. But like the other Mandinka warrior said “Nyi ya moi huum, wotoh feng neh kah sunkang.”

“It is now an open secret that Colonel Ndure Cham, Kukoi Samba Sanyang, Captain Sanna Sabally, Major Kalifa Banjinka and other Gambian dissidents hold regular meetings, backed up by the Senegalese government through its Ministry of Interior.” DO

Not forgetting that Jammeh was the one that invited Kukoi home on numerous occasions, gave him a house in kanilai and provided him with guards, et cetera. So forgetful my political professor is, haaaa?

“Who will take the West seriously when they can condemn one killer and praise another for the same type of atrocities inflicted on mankind? “DO

As well the above quote from Do sounds very hypocritical. Did they forget that we are still dripping tears over the lost of many alleged coup plotters, peaceful student demonstrators, and others like Foday Makalo, Koro Ceesay and Deyda Hydara.

If Sajar and his confidants at the Gambian palace are mongering for war, they better as well calculate the repercussion that will come with it. People in the area enjoyed many things together.

Dalton

I seee this quote differently. Who are the two killers the DO is refering to? I think we need to know who they are and why one is chosen against the other.

Like the mandinka say: NING KATA BEH WULO MAA LA, AKA FOLO KUNG TEMA TELO LEH LAH. (it means, when misfortune is starting to haunt a dog, it starts with a gangrene on the head and then spread to rest of the body and organs.

My neighbor in the village used to say this to his children on their way to the farm especially when the boys are lagging behind on a very cold wet day. They never liked the farm

More readers need to join the debate so we can expose the conspiracies behind acusing Senegal of invading the Gambia. I just don't get it. No matter how much we hate our government, encouraging violence between these two sister countries is unacceptable.

Gainako will take the lead in challenging any irresponsible reporting that is likely to bring instability between Senegal and the Gambia. We love our brothers and sisters in Senegal and therefore cannot let some loose journalist destabilize our lasting peace.

Read on our first positive commentary between the two countries.

Many are out to distract Gambians and the world from our most pressing social and political problems. They can evade as much as possible, but our eyes will never come off the ball.

If there is any tension between the Gambia and her larger neighbor , Senegal the Daily Observer's role should be to help diffuse it , not to fuel it.
It is clear from its editorials that the Daily Observer is ochestrating conflict between the Gambia and Senegal. It should be no illusion to the authorities in the Gambia that we cannot afford a war with Senegal. All these accusations being fabricated by the Daily Observer are presumably baseless and serves no purpose but to distract attention from the daily problems facing Gambians at home.
The Gambia must not meddle in the Cassamance conflict. Jammeh and his government needs to collaborate with the Senegalese government to find a solution to the Cassamance problem. It will be an initiation of covert warfare if Gambia allies herself with one of the rebel factions in Cassamance against the Senegalese government.
The presence of Gambian dissidents in Senegal would apparently be for humanitarian reasons only as required by international law , but not to instigate an invasion of the Gambia. That accusation is just far-fetched and hard to contemplate.

The DO editorial is rather unfortunate. If Dakar is fomenting trouble I think the stance of the DO and Senegambians is to ensure that common sense prevail. I must admit that the besides DO editorial, there are also many unpalatable editorials coming from the Senegalese press. I can remember on seneweb (Senegalese web portal) when the Gambia ferries increased its tariff, Senegalese press went berserk. Some nonentities called The Gambia and Gambians all names.

The Gambia and Senegalese problems has been going on for many yrs. What we need is open and sincere consultations between Dakar and Banjul. The bedrock of the discourse must be mutual respect. Without that there can never be peace. The Senegalese must cease to see The Gambia as a potential province, and Gambians as not ‘awaken’. The Gambia and Jammeh’s administration must come out plain to show their true colours in the Casamance conflict. No double standards. The casamance civil war has brought us only un-told hardships. The Gambian authorities must ensure that Casamance fighters dnt use our territory as a springboard to launch attacks on Senegalese troops just to take retreat in the Gambia when the heat is turned on them. Its going to be very difficult to monitor the activities of these fighters on Gambian soil, simply becos the resources are inadequate. The borders are porous especially in the Fonis and besides most casamance people like other peoples have families in The Gambia. Because of the ‘Maslaha’ culture these families won’t hand over these dissidents to the police. Its going to be tough but with resilience I think we should be able to apply effective community policing.

On the part of Dakar, I think they should also do their side of the bargain. It would be fool hardy on the side of the Senegalese authorities to sponsor dissidents to wage war on The Gambia. It has many dimensions, one on the economic front its not good for Senegalese. Destabilising The Gambia where hundreds of thousands of their nationals own businesses or are happily resident would mean loss of valuable remittance . On the security front, Dakar been sandwiched between two raging conflicts is to say the least undesirable. If the Gambian dissidents think that they can take Gambians to ransom for their nefarious objectives, they are fooling themselves. The Gambian civilians would rise up to the challenge and fight along the Armed Forces to fend off any external aggression. We want change but certainly not thru violent means. Besides, these so-called dissidents should keep their cool. What they should be thinking of now is how to help heal the wounds the APRC, APFRC, PPP have inflicted on the Gambian masses for decades.

Madi,

i thought we shouldn't as well underestimate their presence in the region, as well their ability to distabilize our nation. that would be too criminal an activity. if justice comes to retaliating 'eye for eye', then we will be doomed for eternity, which is what we expect if the likes of some of these debris' are get back to the clutches of tyranny.. While condemning Sajar (Jammeh), we as well must condemn these debris settlers in senegal. there might be better ways to root out terror. i don't know how this job can be accomplished. i don't know me'in.

Jammeh as president of Gambia is the most fatal accident in our political history. Whatever we like to heap over Jammeh's already dirtied skin, he is a better choice than the bunch of rascals who wish to topple him by another force of arms. Jammeh's toppling of a democratic government by force of arms is more than an over-dose of a bitter and poisonous pill. Let them try it for a day and ask them what happens the next day. We can unseat Jammeh by peaceful democratic means. This illegal grip of political power does not fit Gambia. If it were not for their selfish attempts to snatch power by force, they (the fellows in Senegal) would still have on Gambian army payroll. Jammeh needs to reason better so that he steps down in peace before he is shattered in pieces.

Foroyaa Editorial
WE ARE STILL STUDYING THE SITUATION

Foroyaa expected that the Office of the President or the Department of State for the Interior would issue a press release or convene a press conference to clarify whether Gambian dissidents were collaborating with the Senegalese government to prepare the ground to overthrow Jammeh’s government. Unfortunately, we could not get any official comment despite several attempts to consult officials.
Independent investigations reveal that the conflict in Casamance has become more complicated as different factions emerge.

Apparently, one faction is claimed to be allied with the Senegalese government while the other is fighting for Independence.

There is accusation and counter accusation regarding support given to one faction or the other by one government or the other.
It is therefore evident that the relation between The Gambia and Senegalese governments is not at its best, to state it mildly.
Now one may ask: Is there cause for alarm.

Our reading is that an external military force can only pose an immediate threat to a country by assembling troops close to a particular border in preparation for an invasion or have links with members of an army which rebels against its political leaders.
Foroyaa has not seen any evidence of arrests within the armed forces to warrant suspicion of an immediate threat nor has it seen any assembling of troops on the borders and heightened military alert to give indication of an immediate threat.

What is evident is that the war in the Casamance close to the Gambian border is still raging, Gambian military personnel who flee to Senegal are given refuge and the relation between the two governments still appears to be characterized by suspicion.
Foroyaa has highlighted the implications of raising alarms of war threats and still call on the government to clarify issues. It now rests its case on this matter.

Allow us to take this opportunity to inform readers that Foroyaa is engaged in restructuring so that it will be able to engage in more investigative journalism to tap diverse sources of information to keep the people fully informed on all matters of national development.

This is some scary stuff. The incompetents are moving our nation towards a crisis that could ruin our nations. What is up with all these paranoia about a bunch of exiled military men? What evidence is there to show that they are in cohorts with the Senegalese to invade the Gambia?

I am sick to my stomach reading these bellicose stories. The schizophrenic running the Gambia is gonna get our people kill because of his delusion of grandeur.

There are conflicting reports about ROLES OF JAKAI REBELS OR WHAT THEY ARE CONSIDERED TO BE on the Casamance rebellion between these links recap below:

Daily Observer Accuses Senegalese Govthttp://www.observer.gm/enews/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7844&Itemid=1

QUOTED FROM DAILY OBSERVER:
"The Jakai rebels, headed by Suwarebou Kamongue Jatta are a faction of the Movement for Democratic Forces in Casamance (MFDC) and are bent on killing sympathisers of Salif Sajor.

During the recent fighting between the Senegalese forces and the MFDC, along the Gambia - Cassamance border, the Jakai were reported to have fought in joint unit of the Senegalese security forces against Salif Sarjo’s men.
Sources also disclosed that the Jakai rebels were also enlisted for and have benefited from the recent Moroccan Humanitarian training exercise in Cassamance, unknown to the Moroccans.

It is not surprising therefore, that anytime members of the Jakai fall into the hands of foreigner law enforcement officers, the Senegalese forces would secretly negotiate to have them released. The most recent incident was the arrest of the notorious mastermind of the July 1981 coup attempt which was responsible for many mass graves and the destruction of millions of dalasi worth of property, Kukoi Samba Sanyang. Barely three weeks ago, Kukoi was arrested by the authorities in Guinea Bissau, but secret negotiations led to his release to the Senegealse authorities through the UNHCR in Dakar.
"

SEVERAL HUNDRED REFUGEES IN FONI
under http://www.gambia.dk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3861

QUOTED FROM FOROYA:
"Mr. Malang Sanyang from Eloli said there was a struggle between the Jakai rebels and forces of Alexandra Gibba, who is currently detained at Mile Two Central Prison. Sanyang said the Jakai rebels were able to flush out Gibba’s fighters and they have since taken control of the area. Another refugee in Somita, Bubacarr Badjie said the Jakai rebels are gaining the upper hand in the struggle to control territories in Cassamance. He said this group often attacks the rebel factions in the area, especially when they learned that another rebel group has seized a village. He described the Jakai rebels as a disciplined force that does not engage in taking villagers as hostages. "

Thats just for the records to be set straight!!!
