Kondorong:
thanks for your contributions , and sorry for my late response . I have been tied up with some personal business.
When i said that the electoral system was hardly independent under Jawara's rule , I did not necessarily mean or even imply that it is independent under jammeh's rule.Even a casual observer of Gambian politics will not fail to recognize the lack of independence of the current electoral system in the Gambia.
If you reference the history of my arguments on this forum , I have consistently argued the lack of an independent electoral system in the gambia , and therefore gambian elections cannot be said to be free and fair. I have gone as far as saying that the electoral problem in the Gambia , or on a larger scale the problem of democracy in the Gambia is a systemic problem that requires the complete overhauling of our electoral laws and re-ordering of our constitutional democracy. Otherwise anyone who becomes president in the Gambia under current cirumstances will very conveniently become a dictator.
Yes the electoral system under PPP was not independent because the entire process was controlled by the PPP government( the ministry of Local Government, precisely.) .The role of the divisional commissioners , district chiefs , and the media (Radio Gambia except the last two elections)torpedoed any concept of an independent electoral system.

I wish i could say somethings about Jawara publicly because at the end of the day the bug stops with him, he was the leader and ruler who over saw a corrupt regime, the leader who had the best opportunity, time and to some extend resources to making The Gambia a better for all Gambians but failed misereablly.

I do like the obsession that every thing wrong with our soceity today is a by product Jawara's failed regime, since 1994, there was an opportunity for all Gambians to wake up from slumber dreams and for once be the architech of their own desiny and guess what we failed miseareable. So i think its about time we start to turn the mirrow inwards.

Each time i hear Jammeh and his bunch make references to Jawara my stomarch chunk and believe me the next time i see it written, i will waste no time in wrapping my fish and chips with it..... what's the benefits old news ..... keep it for the historians.

Guys lets not waste our time and resources on people who squandered our public funds on their private use. Our resources could be well spent troubleshooting our current collective predicarment. Lets not forget that these people are enjoying life, they have good life savings, their sons and daugthers are well educated and well placed, they have access to go health care, have homes abroad and have access to three square meals a day .... to most Gambians these basics of life is only a dream.

Lets stop the obsession, its time to think for today and tomorrow. Let confine them to history we have a bigger task ahead.

Somita,

The way Jawara is now history is the same way Gambians need to surrender Jammeh to the anals of history. It is not possible for Jammeh to bring development in Gambia. What we need most immediate and for times ahead is to ensure we destroy the very environment that these bugs bred/breed on. That is the good use about our exchange over the net and what some others are doing on the ground. It is not a secret movement; nothing clandestine. We have to be open about it. This deadly situation has to be exposed. The mentality and style of politics indulged in by Jawara, Jammeh, and all exploitattive breeds of politicians in Gambia could no longer beat the times. It has to be a governance of collective interest. Big talks must now be rendered unfit for consumption. Once sanity is established, we must continue as genuine citizens to protect our people from all forms of deceit and exploitation. That small piece of land called Gambia is not impossible to develop. All that has happened and continues happening is the ugly conduct of unfaithful demagogues who like to be seen as makers when they are destroyers of our dear nation. Before they gain the upper hand, we must all come together and destroy their environment to deny them breeding atmosphere. That is very possible.

Correct me if wrong but i stand to differ from what most of you are trying to panit the old of being of which he isn't. Some need to check facts from fictions, Hitler better than Dawda Jawara, if thats your reasoning for visions better than no vision then rush to your nearest doctor. For heaven sake we lack somethings during the old man's time but The Gambia then was the Darling of Africa. Small but peaceful, and old Paa value and respected HUMAN DIGINITY for which Hitler and Jammeh lack. Anyway not all human belief in God, who is Old Paa that people will not say things about him far fetch from the truth. I read your portion, Kondorong, ie three types of truth, my truth, your truth and the truth what a nice piece. For the interest of all lets allow the truth to prevail not my or your truth.
