If you only judge Britain by London then you are getting a distorted view of the whole in many many ways. North Yorkshire and London are like different countries!! We have wide open spaces...beautiful countryside and lovely, friendly people. I moved here 26 years ago and have stayed ever since.

Increments means increase...teachers get an increase in salary for years of service...so older teachers are more expensive.

I just love the English countryside, it is really beautiful. Never been there, but from what I saw on the telly... It is somehow such a romantic atmosphere. There is something about that landscape and the English architecture that attracts me...
It would be nice to travel there someday actually, only been to London so far.
But why do brits have carpets everywhere, even in the bathroom? That´s not very nice...

Greetings, just a reminder of another difference from Yorkshire countryside to London city where teaching is concerned, recently a headmistress of a Secondary School in North London (where 59 languages are spoken) has ordered her pupils to be taught only in English. She has boycotted the teaching of science lessons in foreign languages, which was originally praised by the Government. Speaking recently she said, “It is absolutely critical that young people should communicate in English at school.” Without re-introducing classes being taught in English will wreck the prospects of students. My friend in another part of London attempts to teach English to a class of 15year olds with 27speaking languages sitting at the desks. A mammoth task the multi-national schools of cities have, and great admiration I have for them too....regards from the lovely friendly people of London!

Oh the provinces are fine if you're white, but the problem with provincial and rural areas of England is that they are small minded, inward looking and low-level racist. Low right wingism is the order of the day, all governed by the tabloid press which conveniently allows people to avoid thinking for themselves. The countryside areas may be spectacular but that is what trains/roads etc are for, so one can enjoy these places without actually having to live there.

Give me beautiful multi-cultural London any day!

The anthropologist Kate Fox concluded that Londoners were actually MORE friendly and helpful to strangers than their provincial compatriots. It is actually part of the small-minded mentality of provincial types that they say they hate London and Londoners without ever having been here (for any length of time) or knowing much about it. QED!

I'll give them one point though, the price of a pint of beer here in london is shocking.

You are absoultely right Gambiabev, I have to keep reminding myself.More people live in London alone than the whole population of Switzerland together. It amazes me still how a city so big can function. But I'd love to see more of the country
Britain seems to be in a muddle.I love the way they try to encourage equality of opportunities and accept the different cultures, but somehow they seem to go too far.
Why are there still 20-50 different languages in a secondary school? Are there so many pupils joining classes who come newly to the country and don't speak English?I know this problem too well in early years classes but I never expected it to happen in secondary schools. It is a tricky subject because we want to be open but being too open is not beneficial at all.Education itself is suffering.
My goodness, I would NEVER ever teach older children in this country. But that's another subject...

Formby, I can imagine what you say is very true. The same goes for any other european country. The rural people are the same everywhere.

Yes....in the school I teach in there are only 2 non white children!
However in the cities in Yorkshire there is a diversity of people just as in London.....visit Leeds or Bradford.

I LOVE VISITING the cities of the uk...my own family live in Leicester....but I am always glad to get back to Yorkshire. I live in the so called golden triangle between Wetherby, Harrogate and York.

It is a very well kept secret....but we have an excellent life style up here!

Anyone planning on visiting uk I would suggest flying into Manchester and then getting a train to York...you wont regret it!

Formby you dont have a very high opinion of your fellow english men........ you soon as if you feel superior to them. You can think for yourself and make your own mind up...what makes you think everyone else cant? Unless people are of very low IQ they can read something and form their own opinion

Don't take it personally. I don't when provincial types opine a propos of nothing about London. At least I've been to York, and I'm afraid 'shopping' is not really enough to excite me.

I'm afraid I found it very dull.

Why bring in my feelings of superiority? I didn't say I had them. I just said that in my considerable experiences of the provinces, people trotted out Daily Mail worldviews without the life experience to back them up.

If you feel personally affronted, perhaps you ought to ask yourself why?

The history of York is the history of England...shame you find it dull........

I wasnt personally affronted by your comments at all...... I know my own mind......I have my own opinions!!!!

But you just seemed disparaging about 'other whites' in UK.

I'm not sure but I think the rhubarb thing might be in West Yorkshire...thats where they all have flap caps and whippets!

I better dash...I'm off shopping in York.......a bit of shallow light relief never hurt anyone!

Actually I'm off to try to buy a new swimming costume for my next Gambia trip.

Interpret it as you wish.

Maybe even try on a few caps while you're at the shops.
