Hello football fans out there, the the long awaited world group draw has just been completed. All is set for what looks like an interesting and mouth watering tournament once again. Interesting draws for the African teams. Two of them are drawn against their colonial occupiers. Togo plays France and Angola plays Portugal.
Here is the full list:
Ivory Coast are drawn against Argentina,Holland and Serbia and Montenegro(the group of death in my opinion).
Ghana plays Italy, USA and Czech Republic.
Togo are drawn against France, Switzerland and South Korea.
Angola locks horn with Portugal, Mexico and Iran.
Tunisia plays Spain, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia.
The other groups are:
Brazil, Croatia, Australia and Japan.
Tinidad and Tobago entertains England(her former coloniser), Paraguay and Sweden.
Germany, Costa Rica, Poland and Ecuador.

You are right Brother Shaka, it going to an interesting summer during the world cup. I think Ghana and Ivory Coast will be the 2 African teams to enarge from the group stage. One thing that may hampers Ivory Coast chance to make it to the next phase of the tounament is their system of play (the 5-4-1 formattion) using only 1 striker (Drogbar) will reduce their chance of going to the next phase, but as a Chealsea fan i have no dout that Drogbar will give defenders run for their money during the worldcup. Please watch out for my GFA league preview sometime this week |

Yeah JT, Ivory and Ghana have a good chance of progressing to the second round. The odds of Ghana looks especially good because Italy always struggle in the first round. Having said that i think the Czechs are the dark horses of the tournament, they have some really gifted player on their side, like Nedved, Cech(your chelsea goalkeeper) and Baros.
Ivory Coast on the other hand will have a mountain to climb to reach the next round because Holland and Argentina are world soccer heavyweights. Like you said, i don't like the Ivorian formation of 4-5-1 either because they possess another prolific striker in Aruna Dindiane.
The one team i would like to overcome the odds and progress to the next round is Togo with their young Nigerian coach Samson Siasia(a world cup veteran himself in USA 94). Just to prove a point, that given the chance and support young African coaches can do it at the higest level. He has done one hell of a terrific job in getting them to the world cup beyond all expectations.
Don't write off Angola yet. Most of their players ply their trade in the portuguese league and had more or less encountered their Portuguese opponents. Just like the Senegalese had upset the French in the last world cup i can smell a stinker for Portugal against her former colony.
With Tunisia though, you just don't know what to expect. They do really well on continental level but shy out on the world stage, as the last two world cups have proved. But looking at their group, i don't see nothing to worry about either because Spain are one of the biggest under achievers in international football. Ukraine and Saudi Arabia are no big test for them either.
My heart will be with Trinidad and Tobago. They worked really hard to come all this way. Hopefully Dwight Yorke and co will give England the run for their money. I can't wait till kickoff. |
