I saw some bloke on the old board defending the practise and referring to those who spoke out against it as 'western lesbians'. I can't remember his name, but he was a regular poster. If his attitude is anywhere near representative, there's a long way to go..!

Greetings toast99, whilst I realize your friend will probably have her last interview tomorrow, followed by an appeal, I would like to mention the following organisation that was created by Helen Bamber www.Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture (an independant human rights organisation) It has links that could be of help to her, plus very worthy reading of introduction to publications & client stories that may also be of help to the less fortunate in the future, hence another reason my mentioning it here. My very best wishes and thoughts will be with your friend tomorrow. Regards, freedom & peace everywhere……

Greetings Babylon, just the mention of another worthy read, DO THEY HEAR YOU WHEN YOU CRY: Fauziya Kassindja - a woman fighting to free herself from the injustices of her culture. At seventeen she was forced to marry a man she barely knew who already had three wives, and prepare for female genital mutilation. Hours before the ritual was to take place her sister helped her escape to Germany, and from there she travelled to the United States seeking asylum – and freedom. Instead she was stripped, shackled and imprisoned for sixteen months by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The American University International Human Rights Clinic assembled a team to fight the case on Fauziya’s behalf. Ultimately, a landmark decision that has given hope to many seeking asylum on the grounds of gender-based persecution, Fauziya was granted asylum on 13th June 1996. Freedom & peace…..

Yes, let's all keep our fingers crossed. Did she say how she thought it had gone?

On another, somewhat similar, line, a Gambian friend of mine found himself in prison here a few years ago (stitchup, but that's another issue). He was remanded in custody and by the time his case came to court, the sentence given was so short that he'd effectively be out of prison in a week.

Except he wasn't. I didn't hear from his for some time and assumed he'd gone back to Gambia, but about 10 weeks later he rang to say he was still inside. He was confused and puzzled in a foreign place and no-one could explain to him why he was still there when he knew he shouldn't be. In his mind, he'd begun to imagine that he'd never get out. Basically, some fool at the HO couldn't be bothered with the paperwork and so he was just left languishing in prison. He wanted to get back as he had various business concerns he needed to address. Ironic eh.

I rang the Home Office, insisted that I spoke to someone at a senior level, and reminded them they were acting illegally in keeping the man inside for longer than the judge had stated. I used the right wing press card and said 'imagine if the Daily Mail heard that Home Office ineptitude meant that 'THE TAXPAYER' was paying to keep a man in prison who should by every law on the book be back home'.

He was on the plane the next day!

I am nobody. I'm a middle ranking civil servant who might know the system but has no power within it. But it's every citizen's right to insist on being heard at the appropriate level.

Toast, your friend has you. Thank God. Because I sometimes wonder what happens to foreign nationls who find themselves caught up with the law and have no-one to help them.

I keep my fingers crossed, too. And if she has to go to Gambia, aybe my husband's family can help her a bit. Let me know. I wish her all the best - God will be at her side.

My Gambian Sister

No matter what the verdict maybe tomorrow I am sure you know you've done your best! I wish you all the best, and to remind you that Our Creator is always with you.

Sometimes obstacles are placed in our path which become stepping stones, and it isn't until we pass through a particular situation then we actually know what the lesson for us is. So try not to worry anymore for it is important for you to conserve your strength. And like so many others who have responded to your good friend Toast 99 or just read about your situation on the Bantabaa. I hope and pray that you have a positive outcome tomorrow.

Peace

Sister Omega.

I will share a similar story. When i was in very troubled waters some years ago, a friend of mine sent me an email about a stranded sailor on an inhabited island after a ship wreck.

He lost all his belongings and one day when he went out to hunt for food, his thatch house caught fire.

He had been burning fire so that ships passing by would come to his help but to no avail for months.

This time when his hut caught fire, he shout telling God why he deserved so much suffering and few minutes later, a small boat docked and the people came to find out if he needed help.

The wisdom is God knows the best time for things and sometimes your house has be on fire before you could build a better one. God be with her and hope her story has a happy ending.
