I hope i havent left the readers with the impression that i do not belief in God. Let me clarify my possition on these issues some more.

I am a muslim and ofcourse i belief in the power of prayers. Muslims have a duty to pray for themselves, their families, their friends and the whole world. One can also seek prayers and blessings from people one revears. There is nothing wrong with that. However when it moves from the relm of prayer and blessing to the dominion of magic, spirits, goasts and the occult, one moves away from the core essense of prayey in to the uncertainty of wealth, power, greed.... People talk of seeing others perform great things. I have seen it too. I have seen magicians of all sorts. From the hollywood Hudene types to the little fulani women from Niger. How i am different from many others is that i do not make a distinction between the magic of the old woman to that of Hudene. They are just that majic. There is nothing spiritual about them there are only sinister plots behind them. How many of you could clame that they have never been approached by some unscrupulous witchdoctor and told that there stepmother, aunt , uncle, inlaws, neighbors or the old woman in the thatched hut at the base of the forked roads is planting some spiritual landmines for them? This is considerably different from someone praying for you.

In the case of Buiba, in fact i have heared of many successful treatements of mentally ill people and i cannot discount the possibility. I know very well that there are some roots and leafs that have signifaicant medical values. This applied by experienced people could indeed offer tarapy. However, if someone tells you that your loved one is suffering from mental illness because of some indused enegies from your neighbor, maybe you should be advising them to seek treatement also because they might be the ones who are crazy. Yes, i know people who have effective treatement for certain ailments and i respect that and i think government should find a way of intergrating them to the medical and medical research profession. I know someone from my home town in Badibou who has an effective treatement for the eye infection we locally call "Apolo". He would brew a concoction of leafs and let the patient wash his face with it. In a very short time, the patient is cured. So yes, there are treatements that work wanders yet a majority of the treatements are not effective and in many cases, might even worstin the problem.
Someone mantioned the case of south Africa. Let me inform you of the flip side of that coin. In South Africa, part of the problem they have with AIDS is the local witch doctors they call Sangoma. They had claimed that they can cure AIDS so many people falsly believed that if they do not have to be careful because if they catch the desease, they will just go to the local Sangoma and get cured. Thousands died as a result, and thousands more are going to die as a result of the faundemental misunderstanding and missinformation created as a result.

There is nothing wrong with using what in the west we call 'alternative or complementary' medicine. But the problem comes when people rely on this 100% and never go to a medical doctor.

Lots of western medicine originates from plants and trees. I am sure there is alot of truth to what we call 'old wives tales'.

The danger is when people try to manipulate other peoples minds for money. The mind is a powerful instrument and I am sure alot of witchcraft is really manipulation of the minds of vunerable people.

When it comes to SERIOUS illness such as AIDS or CANCER people would be best spending any money they have on good food and the best doctor they can afford. If people have good immune systems from having a healthy life style and good nutrition they are more likely to withstand serious illness. Another factor in this is the quality of sleep people get. Good sleep ie around 8 hours in one stretch is very restorative and helps fight disease.

kajaw, your points are noted perfectly well. You are right there are some genuine local doctors but the unscrupulous ones, in my opinion, are more. Therefore one has to be very careful.

You just cannot believe everything these people tell you. Some people make it a habit that whatever happens, they will say go to the marabout, he can do this or he can do that. It is not worth the hassle we expent in it anyway.
