Dear Sister Omega

Your kind and sound words have touched us deeply(I had to show this topic to my hubby)and I just wanted to thank you for caring and bothering to give advice.
I am following this topic with interest because my husband suffers from the same illness as this lady and we are at our witts end.I can very much understand this lady, I went through the same with my husband in the Gambia(although I understand the words the lady uses are adjusted to western listeners). We tried Marabout after Marabout, western medicine, but nothing seems to work.We will go for Chinese medicine and give that a try.

To all these toubabs who hate.............

Before you judge you should understand!!!!!!
I don't feel comfortable being white in this tropic because no one seems to understand the situation from the african point of view. This is not something that should be explained in an open forum but if you have the chance, ask a Gambian to tell you the real truth, how they see things, how they think about things.Even about your own culture and lifestyles.

I can't understand that there are so many white women who claim to have so much experience with Africans but when it comes to knowledge and understanding..........

toast 99.
My symphaty is the only thing I can offer you. Unfortunately it does not help you or your friend at all. She has experienced more traumas than many of us can imagine.
Its not important to know what her uncle´s defence not applying for visa is, the fact is that she has been cheated by her own uncle.
I think Sister Omega has stated well what is important to to put the stress on. Sometimes one can gain permission to stay on humanitarian grounds.

I am also thinking about the baby. What is going to happen him when the grandmother dies?

my friend has been able to read these posts second hand through other friends. Thank you for your advice, Sister among the most, but all you who have used this post for your own pathetic racist agendas, grow up! You are not African. You are not black. You are selfish ****s and set back equality years to come with your words. I care for ALL Africans, I do not have an agenda to provide for ME first, like you. **** off back where you came from, usually a UK housing estate. I will help my friend whatever, not like you fair weather fools.

Thanks Twinkly and Kiwi101 for you comments lets hope this woman gets here stay she clearly deserves to as Kiwi101 stated on Humanitarian grounds.

Twinkly I think that chinese medicine is a sensible route to take because it works with the body's Chi or energy source to help cure itself. It is worth a try, and your husband might get the assistance he needs. I've had some positive experiences with acupunture I was unable to walk properly for 4 years due to a series of major surgeries, and after 6 sessions of acupuncture. I was able to walk two miles on my birthday two years ago.

If you are in London ask your GP to refer you to the Royal Homeopathic Hospital where your husband will be treated on the NHS. Alternative they may have NHS Acupuncture clinics in your Health Authority duristiction.

I wish you husband all the best.

Peace

I think she should not rely on the threat of FGM for her evidence but emphasise her increasing disability. RA is crippling and she is badly disabled with it as you say, so the crux of the case is on humanitarian grounds because she is disabled. To that end, you should get as much medical evidence/back up as possible. I suspect you could prevent her being deported under the Human Rights Act if (a) you could prove she had RA badly enough to be considered 'disabled' and (b) you could prove you'd be sending her back to a place she couldn't get treatment. Get a lawyer and your MP on the case!

As hideous as FGM is, the British Govt is unwilling to make moral judgements on it for diplomatic reasons. Whether we like it or not ( I DO NOT!), it's a Gambian custom and it's not the role of the British Govt to offer refugee status on the basis of it. It's just not diplomatic practise. It's the job of the Gambian Govt to stamp it out, but that's another issue.

You won't win the case on the FGM thing, you bloody well out to on the RA thing, so get letters, doctors evidence, everything to bolster that side of the issue.

1: Sunna Circumcision - consists of the removal of the prepuce(retractable fold of skin, or hood) and /or the tip of the clitoris. Sunna in Arabic means "tradition".

2: Clitoridectomy - consists of the removal of the entire clitoris (prepuce and glands) and the removal of the adjacent labia.

3: Infibulation(pharonic circumcision)-- consists of performing a clitoridectomy (removal of all or part of the labia minora, the labia majora). This is then stitched up allowing a small hole to remain open to allow for urine and menstrual blood to flow through.

so, for all you who don't give a ****....this is reality!

enjoy!!

You are missing the point. Of course FGM is terrible and should be illegal. That is my view. BUT as formby says the government wont get involved in a sensitive cultural issue. Especially at this senstive time. Its a no win situation for them. Can you imagine the outcry by muslims telling the uk to keep its nose out of its traditions?????

Her best chance to stay is an UNEMOTIONAL APPEAL based on EVIDENCE about her disability. Then she may be allowed on humanitarian grounds.

The FGM needs to be tackled long term by education, possibly by midwives, so that mothers will stand up for their daughters and will be strong enough to say NO. The cultural pressure to let it happen is intense. This pressure needs to be altered.

I'm sorry "bev" but I missed your support and advice.....the reason for my response was in reply to YOUR ignorence. Do not bother replying because my friend wants genuine advice from people who like Gambians and Africans not people who want to see their "name" on a post. The only thing that I will say is "read the post before opening your racist mouth!!"

One final point...this post was for a Gambian woman, not for any UK or European ignorent people to have a rant. This woman is real, her life is real, her fears are real, not pathetic worries about Sainsbury's or "black issues". Get a ****ing life, morons, this world is about other people than you. My friend will be dead within two years. I care about that. I do not care about your ifs and buts. If you do not like it go away. My friend does not need a "faux" African friend.

Correction gambiabev FGM is illegal in the UK.
http://www.wluml.org/english/newsfulltxt.shtml?cmd%5B157%5D=x-157-33540
This Gambian sister will indeed be sent to be tortured under British law, and the judge would be breaking UK Human Rights Laws to send her back to be tortured. If FGM is performed on her against her will this is an abuse of human rights and the British Judge will be intentionally sending her to be tortured with the threat of death if FGM goes wrong.

I think Bev if you are going to dish out advice at least get to know the subject matter. It's alright being on the defensive about not being racist. It's not enough being anti-racist for political correctness, it is about meaning it. I suggest you face facts about how many times people have pointed out your racist attitude and the impacts it has on others and you still continue putting your foot in it all the time. As a Teacher you should be aware of Praxis reflecting on experience to improve your performance.

Toast 99 try not to get too wound up by the insensitivity you've encountered here from certain ignorant members of this forum, it is a reflection of racism in denial Stay positive my Brother.

Peace

Sister Omega.
