FORMER PS’S TRIAL IN CAMERA By Fabakary B. Ceesay
The trial of Lamin Sanneh, Former Permanent Secretary for Works and Infrastructure and the state, had been called into chambers.
When the case was called before magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of Kanifing Magistrates Court, on Tuesday 8 May, the state counsel, E.O Fagbenle, told the court that they intend to hide the identity of the witness due to the nature of the case and the witness’ job. He cited section 24 (2) of the Constitution to support his application. The defence counsel Lamin S. Camara said that in the interest of justice he will not object, and added that anything that has national security implications should be in chambers.
Counsel Camara said that the charge sheet is not under the ambit of section 24(2) of the constitution. Magistrate Jammeh said that the court is an open court and that all cases are entitled to be heard in the open. He ruled that they will discuss the matter in chambers and if possible, for the whole trial to proceed in chambers.
Mr. Lamin Sanneh is standing trial for alleged negligence of official duties. He was said to have neglected his duty to report to office as he was required to do. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of D100, 000. He had spent five months in detention before his first appearance in court on 3 April 2007.

I stayed in Gambia for almost two years so I think I can say something about the political situation in that country. Yaya Jammeh has taken the tiny country into his pocket. It is his property. Noble men are sent to Mile Two for nothing.Journalists are perishing everyday. Political opponents are given death threats everyday. Deyda Hydira was murdered in cold blood and up to now, no concrete evidence has come out of the numerous investigations conducted. The average Gambian citizen is afraid to air their grievances. The Gambian presidency is no longer regarded by the A.U. This has evidenced itself in many ways. One typical example is her inability to occupy the ECOWAS chairmanship when everybody knew that it was the time for Gambia. I will just conclude by saying that only time will tell what the fate of Gambia will be like. |
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

What you have stated Kumi is more less the same message running around for very long time. It is this type of message good people like Sister Omega feel bitter to read about. If you are reading Sister Omega, this posting from Kumi is not by Santanfara, Karamba, Baldeh, Maddis, and those you openly challenge as peddling Jammeh hatred messages. Do you have anything to respond Kumi? Have you also heard about a young man killed in Gambian security hands? Do you still expect Gambians to muster courage to let things pass by as though all is fine? |
