A report of an imminent attack on the Gambia by Ex. Soldiers back by Senegalese forces today surfaced on one of our co-online newspaper - Thegambiaecho.

http://thegambiaecho.com/Homepage/tabid/36/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/481/Imminent-Attack-On-The-Gambia-How-True-ETC.aspx

This report while news worthy is deeply disturbing to any peace loving Gambian. No matter how much we oppose our current regime, the security of our nation is a fundamental duty of every citizen. The consequences that comes with an invasion by another nation or disgruntled soldiers is far more devastating that practicing journalist competing for rating.

Upon reading the report, Gainako has dispatched our sources to investigate the report and give our readers a concrete information regarding the situation. Until we or other papers are able to back their reports, the information should be treated as a rumor.

We are gravely concerned about the consequences of the report and will do everything possible to shet light on the issue. For now we challenge all our sister online papers to use caution and put the security of our nation first before the government.

It it worth notice that the report has since taken second or third seat on the said paper when it was only reported today.

Baldeh,

Sensational juice squeezing journalism takes us no way. Online as well as print journalists have proper responsibility in parting with information. This wild bid for RATING is cheap and childish. Factual and rattional reporting is better than posting sensational rumour itmes for wild fire imagery. If any site tows the line of sensational reporting, there is a limit to it. The report on Gambianecho is unfortunately one of smoky rumours. The stripping naked of Bajanka's wife as indicated in that report is not an item fit to be classified as SECURITY RISK associated with INVASION by forces outside Gambia. If Sana Sabally or any insane grudge driven group or individuals think they can take Gambians for a ride, this is not the right time. We want Jammeh out and all those bearing the same forceful dictatorial fix like him. Hold it guys, no way.

The truth or otherwise of these rumors must be verified, but the question is how.Newspaper ratings are important to those who are in that industry but of little consequence to those on the outside, your last paragraph is indeed worthy of note.Let us all just WAIT for developments, and HOPE that this published rumor has NO BASIS IN FACT.

Readers, as I mentioned we have dispatched our machinery to investigage and give us the facts surrounding the rumors. Our initial finding though not conclusive is that there has been gross misrepresentation of what transpired in the Gambia in the last few days.

Our reporter spoke to a reliable source on the ground who "dismissed the rumor as baseless and fear mongering". The source went further to state that what happened was the incident involving some youths and the police where one 20 year old Abdoulie Minteh died as a result of the incident.

Shortly after the confrontation between the police and the youths, the police call for enforcement and two military trucks full of soldiers with their usual guns were seen passing through the most popular Serekunda Market. All of a sudden there was pandimonium and people were seen running every where. This chaos sent a wild radio Kang Kang (unsubstantiated rumor) across the nation about an attack. This is so far what led to the wild rumors according to sources.

We continue to investigate the matter and will clear the air of any unfounded rumors. What bothers us the most is the rush for what should be a credible online paper to report on this matter without proper investigation. What is even more irresponsible is the magniture of the story and its potential to create chaos between our sister countries. We expect that anyone reporting on such story will pause for a second and think about the consequences.

Gainako will take it upon ourselves to challenge all newspapers online or print to raise the bar high in the standard of news reporting. We will call on any paper or individual to desist from irresponsible form of reporting. Likewise, we will expect to be held to the same standard. This is a noble profession and it comes with lots of responsibilities and consequences. Stay tune for our call to decency....
