The piece below is written by Dr. Saine. Dr. Saine is a University professor, and the very brainchild of STGDP.
He just returned from the Gambia, about three weeks ago.
Below i paste exactly his words, over the current leadership crisis at the Nadd Secretariat. At the very moment, we know the meeting of a flagbearer is on, and we hope to update forums later on.
And to very far extend, i share Dr. Saine's thoughts and political view. It won't be also fair not to mention, he is a special admiration to me, and his ways appeal to me a lot. He is heroic and a gentleman.
I was wondering how many among the many other influencial figues among the many we have will have courage to address the truth, as is supposed to be-and not to run about the Bush, as if some "taboos" and "tortems" are the order of worship.
I am of the view , repeatly that they should respect their "vows" , as the popular vote is what we should go by. If Darboes refuses when OJ is chosen, and OJ refuses in reciprocal, then what are we looking at. I am not saying that will or is the case.

OPINION This is not the Time for Darboe to Break- away Under a UDP- banner By Abdoulaye Saine Hamilton, Ohio, USA
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
January 25, 2006 The ongoing political furor over Omar Jallow's (OJ) selection as the presidential candidate for the 2006 presidential elections and not Ousainou Darboe by NADD's Executive can not be contested on grounds of OJ's electability. This is a flawed argument that undermines the very democratic process that the Mou sought to engender and agreed to by all parties. Flawed as the Mou is, Darboe and all the presidential-candidate aspirants accepted the ground rules heading into the meeting that selected OJ. To use arguments based on previous election results or being the single largest opposition political party has little or no relevance to the decision already rendered by NADD's executive. Why must the rules now be contested or changed just because Darboe was not favored? Why must we second-guess the process and the thinking behind each executive member's decision?
If the truth must be told, Darboe has no choice but to support the process that selected OJ, regardless of his reservations about the process itself or possibly the candidate, if any. If Darboe had been selected, I would have defended and supported his candidature despite what OJ or anyone else may say. To do otherwise would be sheer hypocrisy. To date, the Mou remains the best document for the current coalition. It took months of tedious negotiations to arrive at its painstaking details.
Furthermore, Darboe tried in 1996 and 2001 and could not dislodge Jammeh. It is time for another candidate to give it a try. This is partly because the political landscapes of 2001 and 2006 are very different and the latter may require a different strategy and candidate. In my humble opinion, Darboe's professional and personal temperament may not be suited to counter Jammeh's brutish threats and venomous attacks. His personal and professional skills would serve The Gambia best, in my view, in a post-Jammeh era in 2011 as a presidential candidate and possibly president. What is needed now is someone like OJ to confront Jammeh head-on as decided by NADD's Executive, in spite of the reservations others or I may have about his candidature. And, like many of you, I harbor many.
Therefore, the issue of OJ's political baggage cannot be overlooked, nor anyone's for that matter. He served the PPP for well over a decade as parliamentary secretary and minister. Yet, unlike most of his other PPP colleagues after the coup, he has been unflinching in his opposition to Jammeh and has paid dearly for it; so has Ousainou, Halifa, Waa and the other leaders who also have their own limitations. If Ousainou were chosen the issue of baggage would inevitably come up. This is not the time, nor the place to spell out Ousainou's or OJ's.
Additionally, this is not the time for Darboe to break away under a UDP banner to contest the presidency as it could aid Jammeh in his re-election bid. If Darboe is truly committed to ridding the country of Jammeh, which I believe he does, he must forego his short-term interests and putative gains as a presidential candidate in 2006 for the larger national good. After all, NADD's Executive chose OJ cognizant of Darboe's standing as head of the largest opposition party.
I humbly urge Darboe, the UDP Executive, advisors and supporters to rally behind OJ as he was duly selected by NADD's Executive. To do less is to subvert the very democratic process they all claim to uphold and wish to see in a post-Jammeh era. If NADD unravels into its constituent political parties so could the effort to oust Jammeh. Another five years of Jammeh, possibly ten is too painful to ponder.

Dalton, The following is a copy of my reply on Gambia-l to Dr. Saine.
Dr. Saine, It is mild if I say you disappoint me. Being the architect of what later became STGDP that later gave birth to the coalition, how can you at this moment pronounce "OJ as he was duly selected by NADD's Executive" without any press release from the NADD coordinator? One would have expected you to be mute until a press release comes from the NADD executive before your this letter even if you knew what was going on behind the scene. Do you have any respect for the NADD coordinator or the Executive or is your loyalty with O.J only?
I expect your sincere reply here on Gambia-L as you are still subscribed even though you choose not to send any of your articles here for a while now.
I have nothing against O.J but it pains to see those we have trusted coming around and becoming Judas at this hour of unity.
Note: I am not a UDP supporter and have never been a PPP supporter either.

Momodou,
We might be holding different views on this matter here, and political opinion will not be my tool for judging your piece or that of Dr. Saine, and much respect to all of you. I am not a timely follower of the L, but constant at the G-post, which is almost the same postings.
I think that, you or Dr. Saine , myself or any one else can comment on the matter, as he did or you did. I believe his comments are coming as an observer, also as an individual-like any of us here or there. Such comments were long since expected from not only him, but the many respected elders any where. To sort the problem, requires the truth to be hammered.
In the absense that Nadd is not talking, everything is being murmured, and the murmur my brother Momodou entails a lot of "truth", as well as some "fasle". The fact on the groud though someone is not accepting the other.
If the polls reported are something to go by, then i am of the believe that , even if a negotiation is necesary, it shouldn't be done at extreme, and at the sole aim of dividing.
I am also neither UDP nor PPP-OJrites or Darborites, i am strictly not in any.
Brother Momodou, i will post on more later...no time right now.
Thanks and regards, Dalton |

I don't think any one is trying to suppress the professors right to comment. What most people are worried about is his assertion that OJ has been duly selected to lead the coalition when the selection process is still in progress.
You wrote in your introduction the following: "At the very moment, we know the meeting of a flagbearer is on, and we hope to update forums later on."
So what is it Dalton? Has OJ been duly selected as the professor will like us to believe or is the process still in progress? This is increasingly looking like a coordinated negative campaign against Ousainou. If they try to bully UDP by this tactics (misinformation peddled as truth), the results might be the disintegration of NADD. |

Dalton, you seem to be part of this rumor mill. Why can't you wait until there is a press release from NADD instead of your continued report of hear say and rumor mongering? Is there a reward for the first person to announce the flag bearer ? I am afraid the damage is already done and you guys should thank yourselves.
By the way I never trusted people with pseudonyms because they just fade away as soon as the kitchen gets hot and show up whenever the smell there is nice. |

That is the first rule of negative campaigns. Throw raw meat out there and turn around with a disclaimer like you did with the: "I am not saying that will or is the case". The damage has already been done. The people reading that statement who don't know any better will think that Darbo refused to accept OJ's nomination and it will only be fair if OJ do the same and in the end Darbo will be seen as the spoiler.
Dalton, I am not saying you are part of a rumor mill, but you sure like to spread their message for them.

Ousman,
Opinion casted, and every one can make theirs and pin point individuals.
What i wait for, and May God help me confine it to myself, is the naming completion.
Opinions can be wrong or right, but one's token of expressing his/her feelings freely.
The truth though will set anyone free. (The bible).
If you should post and i don;t reply to your post, not that i don't regard your quest for a debate, but that i call it day for now.

I think it will be crucial for the Nadd co-ordinate to come out and clear the air at this juncture. His silence has cause lot of damages. We want to know what is going in the Nadd secretariate.

NADD is nothing but a disgrace. I have been suspicious of their long standing without a leader. This is a clear indication that it is party based on selfish interest with selfish agenda. If the so-called political veterans and intellectual advisers start fighting at the corridor of NADD, what will they do at the corridor of power? It will be like Kibaki or Wade -Style of Coalition. Lets face it UDP is party of one section who think they are born leaders of the Gambia. This is the misconception that keeps on hunting them. The failed Alliance of UDP,PPP and NCP in the last election was a result of three greedy wolves fighting for a piece of cake. FIASCO!!! This type of greed and selfishness will always lead them to nowhere.
Although Jammeh may be an unwanted ****** but electorates may equally fear preachers who do not live by their words. They may be more treacherous and full of vengence. Gambia is tried of old politicians who have nothing to offer except lies and betrayals. OJ and Darbo are nothing but political bigots only paving ways for their masters outside. Let them relax. Tell them gambians are no fools to be fiddle with.
Yes Yahya is terrible but NADD is worst, especially with patronage of the old PPP heavyweights hiding in Senegal, UK and USA. NADD should wake up and stop politics tribalism for there is no tribe in the Gambia now. The intermarriages and social interactions have abolished tribalism. Nobody cares about tribe but the person who delivers. What is the use having a brother in power who worships outsiders and spit on you? PPP and its cohorts have failed the nation and I dont think people are ready to be fooled for the second time.

I dont understand fully the details of Gambian party politics to comment on individuals.
But it seems clear to me that the people in power at the moment dont care about the ordinary Gambians. Surely to vote them out is better than them staying? In England we had Margaret Thatcher, many people voted to get her out that werent supporters of the opposition at all. But the object was to get her out!!!! I think the same applies at this time in Gambia.
The character of those who take over will be tested when they are in power and if they are found wanting they in turn will be voted out.
I think Gambia needs a GENUINE party from the root level for the working class people....the MAJORITY by far in Gambia. Look at the labour party in Britain in the 40s and 50s ...their policies are similar to what Gambia needs now: Health care, education and employment rights should form the key.
I would say to any waivering Gambians, dont loose sight of the bigger picture, vote to get rid of the tyrant. The small stuff can be sorted later........but from opposition little is achieved.

Momodou and ousman, I agreed with your sentiments regarding to rumour spreaders, which included Dalton and Dr Saine. These guys has created all the silly confusion surrounding NADD. Its means they knew something that the vast NADD sympathaizers don't know about. These few chalatants will fail vigorously in the coming days. They are playing on a very dirty card, which some of us understood long before they started with the wild rumour. Dalton will hate to see another "Nko" back to power. I bet you guys will re-check Dalton's previous email regarding certain tribes. You can see we are having cyber hypocrite's, their crime is that they bears false witness against themselves. "What makes it so plausible to assume that hypocrisy is the vice of vices is that integrity can indeed exist under the cover of all other vices except this one. These guys are political hypocrites, they really rotten to the core.

Hi folks :
I do not see anything wrong with Dr. Saine's comments about the leadership crisis that confronts NADD presently . I think , If we can 't talk about it then we can 't solve it . We don't want to watch NADD degenerate in silence , do we ? I hope that all the contending parties in the NADD leadership and executive will read Saine 's comments and put their acts together for the benefit of the Gambian people .
Even though I don 't think Darboe 's temperament , professional or otherwise would make him less suitable to take on Jammeh , I strongly expect all stakeholders in NADD to respect and abide by the democratic process . Otherwise , what kind of a future are we building from here after Jammeh .
Thanks evryone , and thanks Saine for your comments .

You better take your seat calmly here brother Dalton without using foul languages against your comrades. Shows me where I perpetuated fraudulent news against any body? Your responds to Momodou has proved me and others right that you are perpetuating indecent agenda within the NADD Executive members.
Please be my guest to strip me off with anything I used or said without substances. For your info I have been here long since my good friend created this forum. Use your skill in writing maturely and sensibly than using more the keyboard without your brain. We need each of those Parties that constituted NADD. Stop your dirty games. Stop hanging your selves daily.

Hey Dr. or professor, what type of Dr. are you do you have Dr.Jammeh's qualification(No disrespect or ilwill? Do not want to teach at the University of the Gambia your home land and share your knowledge wit yor kit and kins? No wonder you might not know the suffering of the poor Gambians around our arears-the provences. You should have left yor car,go to Bundung police carpark and try to board a van to Basse arround tobaski.Am not being rude but I think you need EARS to hear the cries from home Wit respect to you sir who infact selected you NADD spokesman? How can you announce on such a widely read website the executive's choise of the Flagbearer without the authority from the co ordinator?Infact what is going on? I said if any body need to lead NADD,let the people choose Him/Her.You see Doctor, that is why PPP broke after Jawara b-cause they then had no basic foundation. All was centered on Ba Ba Jawara('Gambia Jawaran tango'Naka la nyo def?) Were you at Mansakonko when He( Jawara) decided to give up?You should have been there my brother.Even APRC, as Jammeh goes 4 they also had no basis.Do you know how many members were in the NADD Executive and how many were there when OJ was sellected?I don't ofcause mind if OJ leads the Gambia 4 I know him and what he is capable of,but it has to be done democratically and nothing else or we allow Jammeh to continue and we all face it.B-cause as all true Gambians even if you are ok, maybe 2 to some members of yor extended family are facing the burnt of Jammeh's fire. Lets stop joking with the computers and think of something constructive to put all on board 4 NADD 2 unseat Jammeh come 2006 elections. If not, with the break away of UDP, you will see when the pools are counted. All d morney pumped into NADD would become futile. With d break, lets unite everyone 4 a common goal -DEMOCRACY-let OJ,OUSAINU,HALIFA,WAA.OR HAMAD-each produce 5000 voters to nominate them as NADD'S candidate, then if there are four winners, the first two winners go 4 primaries, then d winner out of this can democractically unseat Jammeh. What happened when Sheriff Dibba said he was blackmailed by PPP members when they were surposed to meet to choose a leader 4 their then colliation against Jammeh?Even if what he said was not true, some believed him. Gambia is more dan NADD or any individuals. Goodnite Dr. Mankajang Janyanfara
