Frankly , I am amazed by the kind of lack of grace exhibited by some contributors to this forum .Our differences in opinion should not be an issue here , rather the adherece to democratic due process and the rule of law should be the uniting factor .This is the ideal we must uphold and encourage in Gambian politics , where currently it is severely lacking .
The leadership crisis that grips NADD is largely a crisis of democracy. That is why it is very troubling considering that it threatened the very ideals that NADD upholds .
Based on my understanding , the flagbearer of NADD ( whoever is choosen ), if elected to presidency serves only one five-year term and cannot contest any subsequent election or back any political party .
You know what , if this is true , it seems to me that the fuming power struggle between Darboe and O.J. is testimony that none of them will abide by that principle . What we will end up having is not going to be different from what we have always had .Where one person clings to power year after year. And if they become unpopular as their performance declines they will certainly become repressive. You see , back to square one !. A political science professor once said that , democracy works best in places where there is a contest of ideas , where there is no monopoly of ideas .
In my view , this is why presidents need to come and go regularly .
The Gambia needs to have a term limit !
And one more thing before I leave : For those who have misconstrued Dr Saine ' s comment , you have clearly missed an important point . That piece is objective and scholarly . We must appreciate that people of Saine 's standing sacrifice thier valuable time and resources to our cause . We must appreciate everyone 's contribution even if only at the level of ideas .Ideas are probably all that Gambia needs at this time to get on it 's feet .
Thanks.

Kb,

i definitely agree with you. The puzzle we should be trying to solve now is why there is a power struggle within the NADD leadership. Is it not them who agreed on the five years term?

There is something they are all up to. I have never trusted Darboe but i do have my reservations when it comes to OJ as well. I appreciate all the hard work he has done over the past years, but i think the man has his heart full of vengence. He may not show it and might hide his ambitions but we all have seen what Yaya has done to those people. I believe if he takes over, we will go back to even a worse witch hunting.

I think NADD should have brought in someone not from any of the member parties. It is sad that they still haven't come out clear to tell people what has happened. There is a question to be asked here. Why can't they be transparent.

I get very angry when i think about us Africans. Our fore fathers sow the seed of greed, jealousy and wickedness and here we are watering the plant and our children are going to reap the harvest. I feel very sorry for the future generations. Who knows? they may never come to see that time. Maybe hunger, diseases and wars will have eradicated the African race by then. Shame on all of us!!!

Thank you Ke jatta,
Well I personally did not doubt brother Saine's commitments to bring democracy to the Gambia otherwise He would not have inolved himself in the forming NADD.
What I questioned was How can such a commited member of democratic restoration without due order from NADD co ordinator, go to such a public and widely read website to announce the NADD flag bearer? What is going on?I repeat. If we want democracy in our motherland by throwing our might behind NADD, I think even if Dr. Saine knew who NADD'S flagbearer is, He should wait until Halifa announce Him or NADD executive did its official announcement.
Since Dr. Saine's announcement, and news paper mentioning UDP'S poolin out of the Alliance,Nothing has been heard from either the alledged choosen leader OJ or Halifa or NADD to verify Dr.Saine's statement. On the other hand, UDP has not made any official announcement as to their witdrewal from NADD.So who is confusing the public?Dr.Saine and the press ofcause.Even if the allegations are true, what is going behind close doors is a moment of truth and those politicians in Banjul knew they can only remove Jammeh collectively and not by breaking apart. If at the end of the day it turns out that OJ is chosen democratically, Darboe or any member of NADD must support HIM or else we cannot trust them in handling the affairs of our state.
As you rightly said anyone who led the Alliance and win, will serve 4 only 1 five year term an wil not stand or support ani party.
My brother am not cutting you short, but if you remember When Jammeh came, they drew a refferandum 4 people to vote on and many who voted yes voted because of the presidential term limit of 2 five year term. But little did they know that the very part they were voting 4 was removed a week b 4 the refferandum.
However we hope the leader of NADD when he becomes president which we pray he wil, will stick to the memorandum and will not change it to suit his personal goal.Wada.did it in Senegal.Oh Africa oh Africa! What can we do?
My brother Born African, wel I must say you have good idears welldone but be very positive if you truely belif in NADD principles,OJ, OUSAINOU, HALIFA, WAA and HAMAT are all executive members and can all lead NADD if you don't trust Darboe and had reservations when it comes to OJ, then who do you fully trust to lead NADD from outside? You maybe right and am not condemning you, not at all we exchange idears b cause we all feel 4 our motherland and want d beat 4 HER.
PEACE and LOVE
Mankajang Janyanfara.
