Another question that i have is that when going to the Gambia is it better to take cash, credit card or traveler's cheque.

Credit card is ALMOST useless. Take some cash and a debit card so you can access your money at home. Also with baybaya express in senegambia you can do same day transfers of cash.
Why not open a bank account at trust bank? Then next time you can transfer money to be waiting for you?!

You can use VISA card but the fees are very high (around £3 each time). The maximum amount for a withdrawal is 2000 Dalasis and you can only receive up to 4000 Dalasis per day.

cash in a good strong, waterproof, money bag. Also, a debit card as a backup - but check the withdrawl limits as set out in the thread above.

Bayba is very good at money transfer, although it is true to say that you can get a better rate for cash as their rates tend to be at the botttom of the scale,I also note that they do a mastercard that has unusual features, personally I use travellers cheques and just take a small amount of back up cash.

Cash always, travellers cheques are good for the hotels and paying for trips or big purchases. Try not to take too many £50.00
credit cards i think only the hotels take them as payment sa for a meal or something, cash ponts only five and if the power is down forget it big problems.
if you are going from gatwick change some money at the airport so that you have dls to land with. I try to take dollar bills as they can be changed by the locals, and local love foreign notes.

£1.00 coins cannot be changed. i have not met any places that will change them.

one pound coins attract a lower rate of exchange so its not value for money. The same thing is ture of small dollar bills up to 20.

Not so, last visit 30 dls for one dlr, the reason i carry these is it is easy to carry paper and exchange it, to keep changing a 5.00 poundote, also it is nice to give that to someone who has done me a favour.

So who needs all the economic advisers as related too in today's 'Prez Candidate Nomination,' when Bantaba have their own 'Jambo' Well done on the dollar - nineteen years we have been taking sterling, looks like we should have been more observant, urghhhhhhhhh

it was easier when the pound was note, the problem is coins, no one changes them or if they do it is a minmum of 50 one pounds. Locals still want sterling, the dollar is okay, but the euro, but i believe that they will change most currencies. someone wants your money.
but Sab be careful where you change it, some people are starting a nice little money laundering business
