FRESH FIGHTING IN CASAMANCE CLAIMS STUDENT’S LIFE
By Yaya Dampha

The troubled region of Casamance in Southern Senegal is once again in its crucial moments, as fresh fighting in the Gambia/Senegalese border region intensified. The fighting, which started weeks ago, has claimed several lives and injuries.

The latest victim, Dawda Colley, a twenty year old Grade Nine student of Jifanga Upper Basic School was shot dead by soldiers on patrol on Tuesday night.

According to family members of the victim, Dawda, who lived with his father in Jakali fled from their native village in Casamance with his father when rebel fighters attacked their village. It is reported that the child was in Jakali on Tuesday when soldiers ransacked their village at around 9 p.m. Dawda who sleeps in another compound, was said to have left his parents and was on his way to bed when he saw armed soldiers. It is reported that he was frightened and as a result ran away to another house. It is purported that he wanted to use an exit door, but a soldier who laid in ambush at that side, opened fire on him hitting his leg and stomach. He was rushed to Bwiam Hospital where he was referred to RVTH where he was pronounced dead.

Dawda’s body was handed over to his parents for burial without an autopsy being carried out on the body.

However, the mortuary attendant at the RVTH is said to have been refused to hand over the body when the family requested for it. He is said to have asked for a police report before handing over the body. The family members went to the Gambia Armed Forces Headquarters where they met some of their relatives who are soldiers. It is reported that their relatives used their influence to facilitate the handing over of the child’s body.
The body was later handed over to the family and he was buried at the Jeshwang Cemetery.

A relative of the family who spoke to this reporter said the rebels had issued warning asking the inhabitants of Jakali, Tambafu, among others, to vacate their village or face the barrel of the gun. It is reported that they (the rebels) accused these villagers of spying on them and giving reports to Gambian soldiers, but the villagers denied the claim.

It is very sad, and it makes me very angry to see that over and over again Africans (and others) are killing each other for the sake of some war-profiteers. If they don't care for the lives they destroy, at least they should think about all the money they waste on weapons. Totalled up, it could have made Casamance a very rich region. I wonder which part of the body these people use for thinking. It can't be their brains, so maybe they do it with their buttocks.
