You seem to have a problem Gambiabev. Debates get heated at the Bantaba and just piss off if you can't take the heat and find another place best fitted for your colonial mentality. You have made a lot of misconceptions and racist comments and still appearing to be innocent and I personally have always given you the benefit of doubt until now. Stop calling people racist and angry |

Gambiabev i suggest you read more, and think more on the subject of racism and then get back to me. I am fully aware that on a human level there is good and bad in every race and social class.
I played you at your own game of stereotypes and you couldn't handle it when the table was turned, and I could honestly tell you who amongst white British men was the best lover because I've never slept with a white man because my personal preference as always been African men period.
Now if people are offended by that so be it because I'm not ashamed of my race nor my children or grandchild. We all live in the real world and which part of the human race, made race a political issue to control the world's resources and still uses it today?
Obviously there are people of all races through time and space the world over who wanted and still want to see this grave social injustice reversed and I am one of them. I think you should address your own racism instead of denying it. And for the record Bev I don't need your approval to speak my mind.
As for peace well I think most people in the world want peace, happiness, good health and prosperity in their lives. I'm sure all those people in war torn areas want peace and others under threat of violence want peace etc etc.
Peace

I am not colonial in my attitude. I am not racist. The proof of the person is in their actions. You make me very angry with your accusations when you dont know a person.
You dismiss all white men, saying your personal preference is black men.If I said the same statement reversing it that would be considered racist. You can say whatever you like, I have to be 'politically correct' because I am white. THAT makes me angry.
What I mean about the 'peace' at the end is that it is facile and meaningless if it has been preceeded by alot of angry and hostile statements.
Peace starts in the heart of one person to another...... if we dont have that what hope do we have to end wars.
I dont consider myself superior to anyone...but YOU have the biggest superiority complex I have ever met online!
People have equal rights to opinions.....you seem to see your self as some sort of teacher to the ignorant. How patronising!! You suggest I should go away and read more.... How do you know what I have read already?! I spent 3 years doing a Sociology degree at the University of York......I did read a little bit then! |

Ive been reading "Gambia" Bevs posts now since she started posting and to date I have hesitated to reply, until now. I think, at best, Bev you are naive. It seems to me that after a total of 4 trips you have fallen in love with the Gambia and quite innocently are attempting to extract as much information and learn as much as possible prior to your next visit. Commendable I guess but innocent in the extreme. There is an old saying which I learnt as a child. "Be seen but not be heard". I would suggest you take it on board . Incidentally I take MAJOR offence to your suggestion that Irish people are "thick". That is a major stereotype which has, over the recent history, been proven incorrect. Sis Omega is an extremely well read individual who has contributed to this Bantaba long before you became aware of the smiling coast. She is NOT racist in anyway, something that now I realise cannot be attributed to you. Peace |

I've never thought of myself as colonial before...I thought that was a role upper middle class people had many generations before me.
I am from an ordinary working class background where my grandparents all had hard physical jobs (women aswell as men) to make ends meet. I was the first person in my family to go to university.
For me and my family to be described as colonial is SO ridiculous! my family were white and VERY poor, up until my parents generation. They were educated and that made a difference to what they could do in life. That is why i am passionate about education and equality of opportunity.
The Gambia families in the villages are like my grandparents in their villages in Leicestershire at the turn of the century. They had nothing in material terms. They had outside loos and a pump for water. They had large families and were only educated to 13. But they supported each other and looked out for each other.
So which is the biggest divide: religion? Colour? class?
For me it is CLASS. My working class grandparents and their parents before them were more similar to Gambian villagers than upper class white people. They knew about being hungry and not being able to make ends meet.
Democracy and education are both powerful tools of change. |

I don't think think these attacks on Gambia Bev are justified. We really need to stop labelling each other and accept each other as one.Of course our understanding and sensitivities to certain things are different and if we don't agree to someones point of view or don't appreciate one's humour why not debate the isssue sensibly and if you felt you have a better understanding of the subject put your point of view across rather than trowing insults and unpleasantries.Chin up Gambiabev! I uderstand your curiousity and didn't think you are in anyway racist. peace & love |

My original postings about tribes, was to try to get at the sutble differences between the peoples in the Gambia. I have been told that the Fulanis are very religious and great teachers about the Koran.......is that a stereotype or is it true?
ALso I am interested to know more about slavery in Gambia within the arfican society BEFORE colonial times. The mandikas I know have mentioned nymalos and sulas..... I recorded this in a different posting. Does anyone know any more?
Finally in Jola society someone has told me there at karoninkas, kass and karones..... can anyone tell me anymore about this?
What about in Wolof society..are there different groups/classes etc.... |

Gambiabev, I spent more than 3 years doing a psychology degree at the University of Cologne, but I am sure that even without that, I could see the narcistic personality behind your performance. You seem to be greedy for attention (hey, believe me, even without getting attention from all sides you actually EXIST!!!). Okay, for this time, and never again, I will pay attention to you. I must admit that sometimes you started lively discussions, but like most narcissists, you are a bore in the end. So stop your infantile question-game which pretends to be naive, but whose hypocrisy cannot be overseen. Thank you.
