The Gambian political climate does not engender active participation, and the consequence most likely is that a majority of the Gambian people will remain silent. They will stay away from political engagements as much as possible. More so, our current political disposition does not make it any easier.
Somehow, deep within the confines of our conscience; somehow, within the corridors of our most basic human instincts, and within our capacity to bring out the best in our humanity something just refused to give up. Something just refused to surrender completely.
This is our sense of what is right. This is our sense of what is the truth; what is humane and acceptable. This is what our struggle should be all about; the struggle that is within ourselves, and the one we wage on behalf of each other. For the last two to three decades or more, there are folks who have been committed and sincere to their beliefs and principles. Folks who refused to compromise themselves and their ideals.
For the last two to three decades or more, some of these folks have suffered the alienation of being separated from their families and their country. They have refused to join the ranks of those who corrupt and be corrupted.
They have refused to join the ranks of those who victimized their fellow citizens, and turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to the plight of the average man and woman in the streets. Some of these folks are still in the Gambia, maintaining their quiet but dignified existence. Some of these folks are within the ranks of the Diaspora.
Some of them still remain silent, but others have broken their silence and give expression to their convictions. They have found their voices again.
In due course hope everyone would be able to find his or her voice. Let silence no longer be an option.
