http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/the-rise-in-the-price-of-sugar-1

"Perhaps the encouragement of investors to establish more cement factories in the country would do the trick in making the price affordable, and thus contribute to the development of infrastructure, whether domestic, commercial or public."

What the author of this Editorial from the point (relating to cement)has failed to realise is that in order to make cement,a few of the things you need are Limestone, (in Gambia ?) and other ingredients,OK Gambia has some, but what Gambia does not have is the vast amounts of energy required to cook the whole lot up to make the final product, cement, look for yourself here :

Great ideas but not workable, the Author suffers the same as I do sometimes, lack of research

I wonder why these is a shortage of sugar to buy in the shops in Gambia resulting in the inevitable increase in price of this commodity ?

"Information reaching this paper has it that the price of a bag of sugar has now moved up to D1,400, just a few days to go before the holy month of Ramadan.
Granted, the purpose of any business is to make a profit; but this should not be used as an excuse to keep the poor masses in the stranglehold of exploitation for the selfish interest of a few."

I think that this could be the cause, hard luck if you do not get your gift from H.E. and have to pay D1,400 for a bag,OK its probably up to D9 for a cup now !!

"As part of his annual gift to Muslims, President Yahya Jammeh yesterday distributed a total of 28, 500 bags of sugar to Muslims across the country.
The sugar distribution, done through the regional governors for onward distribution, was held at the State House grounds in Banjul.

The beneficiaries are as follows: KMC 4,500 bags, BCC 2,100, West Coast Region, 3,500, North Bank Region 4,000, Lower River Region 2,100, Central River Region 2,500, Upper River Region 3,500, Interior wives association 300, Armed Forces wives association 300, security services 3000, the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council 1,000 and the Yai compins through the National Mobiliser 1,000.
