You must be joking, but I fear we both have a different sense of humour. Starving is no reason to leave your country; there must be war, terror or FGM. Okay... |

I didnt say it is NO reason. I said it comes under a different catergory. Not all economic imgrants are starving. You are being very emotive. Someone who is truely starving I would catergorise as a refugee. |

I think it is high time to get emotive. Almost a whole continent is dying under our eyes. No reason to be emotive? |

Serenata Greetings- A book published last year, Human Cargo A journey among refugees by Caroline Moorehead has covered the Asylum-seeker / Refugee / Migrant / Illegal immigrant rigorously. It shows the courage and will to survive by ordinary human beings!
According to UN statistics, only 175million people around 3per cent of the world population are actually outside the countries of their birth at any one time, considerably more of them from the developed than the developing world. What is more, the West needs them. The populations of the West are aging, and migrant workers are needed. As we already know in the UK there are labour shortages.

Thank you, Lemon Time. Do we need another disaster like the Holocaust or the genocide on the American Indian; another mass murder we can feel soooo, soooo sorry about - when it is over, and almost nobody is left?
Sab, this is what I mean. Europe needs the immigrants. Just think about the bravery and strength it takes to make this dangerous and exhausting journey. People who own these qualities should be highly welcomed, everywhere.
But instead of giving them a chance, we prefer to feed a degenerated bunch of social aid alcoholics who go gaga in front of the TV. Okay, this was a little bit strong; I hope you know what I mean. |

Gambiabev, Are you thinking that MIGRATION is a dirty word? Like internally displaced people, like refugees, there have always been migrants, people who move to work, to explore, to travel, to find better lives. What no one anticipated was the emergence of new multi-cultural societies, nor the new patterns that migration has taken. Nor would it have been predicted that the remittances migrants send home would reach $92billion two years ago. virtually double what is spent globally on overseas development.
Why should something as arbitrary as where one is born determine where you should be allowed to live?
Entrance restrictions, border and boundaries, often themselves accidents of history, stand as barriers to a more equal world, protecting the privileges of those who live in the least crowded, richest and safest states. AND why have a free movement of goods and services while restricting the free movement of people?
Refugee: the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to Refugees defines a refugee as a person who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country......regards, The posting/subject has jumped around a little - but, this is the migration/refugee reply.
Refugees live in a divided world, between countries in which they cannot live, and countries which they may not enter / Elie Wiesel

No I dont think migration is a dirty word. Leicester, the city I was born in, is built on the work of many migrants from many different countries. It is a vibrant city because of all the different cultures: irish, polish, jewish, indian, uganda asian, pakistani, and now people from African countries, turkey and so on.
If people were given completely free movement across countries without borders what do you think the positive things would be? What would be the negatives? What percentage of people do you think would actually want to leave their familar surroundings to make a new start? Do you think it would increase beyond the 3% or remaind the same?
As an IDEA I agree that free movement would be the most democratic way to treat the people of the world. REALISTICALLY I do worry about how the services of a small country like uk would cope:schools, hospitals etc.... WHO would pay for it all?
If people are LEGAL imigrants and work to support their families and pay their taxes in the country they are LIVING in, then I am very happy for that to happen.

Sab, I agree! Migration is as old as mankind. Humans are sedentary as long as their habitats provide what they need. If not, they leave - that's all.
Half of the Irish population fled from starvation to the United States. How would you, Gambiabev, call them? Would you say they just went because they thought that the roads were paved with gold in the USA? |
