Denmark introduces world's first food fat tax

Denmark has introduced what is believed to be the world's first fat tax - a surcharge on foods that are high in saturated fat.

1 October 2011

Butter, milk, cheese, pizza, meat, oil and processed food are now subject to the tax if they contain more than 2.3% saturated fat.
Some consumers began hoarding to beat the price rise, while some producers call the tax a bureaucratic nightmare.
Others suggest that many Danes will simply start shopping abroad.
Danish officials say they hope the new tax will help limit the population's intake of fatty foods.

However, some scientists think saturated fat may be the wrong target.
They say salt, sugar and refined carbohydrates are more detrimental to health and should be tackled instead.

Toubab, very few Danes know about "churra gerteh", so there will be no taxes on that.

Toubab, most probably you too will soon be paying this tax in the UK.

Danish Radio reports that Cameron is considering Danish model for fat tax.
"The conservative British Prime Minister David Cameron looks at the Danish model as the solution to the obesity problem.

An obesity tax is something we need to look at, said David Cameron, according to the Daily Mail Channel5".

That's about right, a new and novel idea of getting more money into the government coffers which are very very empty now,the money has been diverted if this comes about, from profits going to producers and companies directly to the government, obesity is a problem admittedly, foodstuffs made from low quality fat product is obviously cheaper to make and can be sold to those on low incomes at an affordable price, take your pick, who do you want to pay !
