1. FREEDOM RADIO FIRST EXPOSED INCREASING YOUTH ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION AND NOW DAILY OBSERVER CONFIRMS IT WITH MoYS deplores rampant sale of alcohol to minors
"Friday, September 30, 2011
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has expressed with total dismay and horror the rampant and indiscriminate sale of alcoholic drinks to minors, including school children by certain unscrupulous businessmen in the country.
According to a media dispatch issued yesterday, the Ministry stated that research findings have revealed that the drinks contain 40% alcohol and it is being sold in sachets at a price of D3. 00 per sachet.
“Consequently, it is easily affordable and available to minors. Furthermore, the drink is disguised as an energy drink because it is not clearly labeled as alcohol and the names of the said drinks could be easily misleading,” the release noted.
To this effect, the release added, the Ministry totally condemns and discourages this kind of business that is detrimental to the health and progress of young people.
“The Gambia government has invested a lot and is very much concerned in the positive development of young people in this country and will not tolerate any unscrupulous business concerns that engage in activities that could impair the health and well-being of children and youth,” the dispatch further stated.
“The Ministry acknowledged and appreciates the swift responses from the Ministries of Health and Social Welfare, Justice, Trade and Interior, in addressing this social menace,” the release concluded.

3. MORE WITH THE POINT Health ministry suspends two manufacturing companies
"Friday, September 30, 2011
The ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Banjul has suspended with immediate effect the operations of Jaya Selina and Prima Fine Beverage Manufacturing Companies, producers of hard liquor such as “Tuta Pack” locally referred to as “Muchubi”.
A press release from the ministry said yesterday that these products (normally packed in small tubes) are made available to the general public including minors, which may have devastating effects on their health and society.
“The ministry of Health and Social Welfare has registered the concerns raised regarding the consumption of easily accessible and affordable hard liquor products, which have deceptive labeling and packaging,” the release said, adding that these products are distributed losely and sold cheaply at registered and non registered outlets.
Announcing that henceforth, all production, distribution and sale of these products anywhere in The Gambia should cease with immediate effect, the ministry of Health called on the general public, especially parents, guardians and school authorities to be more vigilant in the protection of their children, who are most vulnerable and at risk."The Point

Response to The ministry of Y&S
"alcoholic drinks" are a form of escape from boredom or problems, this is probably the reason for increased consumption, although the ministry fails to give the source of this information.Obviously "indiscriminate sale of alcoholic drinks to minors, including school children by certain unscrupulous businessmen " is very bad and should be dealt with, the ministry appears not to have considered this course of action and just strung a load of words together to show that they have done something,in the way of teaching young people and children of the dangers of "alcoholic drinks" exactly what remains unexplained.
Response to The Ministry of Health Swift Action,Thanks. |

When we read about this incident in The Point online issue, I said to my husband: "I'll eat my hat if there is not any US influence behind this disgusting affair". After a few clicks in the internet I found out: Prima belongs to US-Company Sara Lee...
One should ask them if it is the private policy of Sara Lee to intoxicate children, or if this is part of the well known US-policy of destabilization - in Muslim countries and elsewhere.
Alcohol and drugs are weapons, and they are used exactly as that. |
