Is Gainako really alluding that the UDP had made "serious concessions" in the recent talks among the opposition parties? What concession? They have not given up nothing that could have yielded any fruitful agreement in the latest round of talk. How dare anyone in his right mind put 'party led coalition' and 'transition government' in the same mouthful and not be peddling utter nonsense. A UDP led government cannot be a transitional government, kaput. Unless the constitution of the Republic of The Gambia had been highjacked right from under the nose of The Sheikh and manipulated overnight to state otherwise, a UDP led coalition government is a UDP government in every sense of the word and subject to the whims and caprices of the UDP party. This is what people must understand first before suffocating us with 'UDP concession' rubbish. If the UDP is interested in the idea of a 'transional government of 5 years' the only thing they have to concede is the bloody idea of a 'party led' delusion for any reasonable coalition to come to bear. You lot have to stop the hypocrisy and rightly address the problems of the coalition talks in in their factual context inorder to be seen to be objective journalists. The positon of PDOIS, NRP and Gomez's party is just that - drop the idea of a party led coalition for a transitional goverment - if your report is anything to go by. Except that Hamat Bah is the biggest hypocrite and opportunist of them all. For five years and more the PDOIS have been selling the idea of a transitional goverment and for five years Hamat Bah have been thwarting this very idea in favour of a UDP led coalition. Mr Bah must be the most confused soul in Gambian politics, otherwise what exactly have changed overnight for him to do the 360 degrees u-turn. His reasons - listening to Freedom Newspaper Radio - are not only illogical, unreasonable and downright stupid but very dangerous for our democracy. According to Bah;
(1)UDP must give chance to another party to lead an alliance.
(2)NRP is in favour of an independent individual to lead the coalition.
(3)The leader of the coalition cannot be a Mandinka because they have already been in power and that Gambians of other tribes are wary of a Mandinka candidate.(mos mosal le)
How the hell did Hamat Bah get away with these pathetic excuses with some supposely sane Gambians applauding him all through this bullsh1t. Why is this man deliberately allowed to infuse tribalism into our political discourse and we remain absolutely mute, most especially the Gambian media. There is is no go damn tribal "mos mosal le" in the constitution of The Republic of The Gambia and will never be. The 'most deserving' person elected by people gets to be elevated to the helm of power by virtue of being able to win the most votes and not their tribe. Ousainou Darbo and any Mandinka or Jola have the right to vie for the position of the Presidency irrespective of the tribe of their predecessors.
The second point of Mr Bah that UDP must not field a candidate for leadership of the coalition because they have led a previous coalition is abnoxious. How do you expect the already dwindling numbers of the opposition to remain undivided by tying UDP hands in the selection of a flag bearer for the coalition and expect their whole hearted support? Is Mr Bah nuts? Nobody forced Hamat Bah to join the UDP coalition in the last elections. He did so with his free will and tribal calculation that Mandinkas + Fulas is equal to the majority needed to romp home with victory. I genuinely hope the UDP tells him were to go if they were not too fixated with Halifa Sallah.
With regards to the independent candidate, why was Mr Bah castigating the PDOIS and other sensible Gambians all these years for proposing this idea in favaour of a UDP led coalition. Talk about double standards and a two-face freak.
If any party have conceded anything this time around in the latest talks then it's the PDOIS. From these these two interviews of Halifa Salah with The Point and Foroyaa below:
http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/halifa-sallah-speaks-on-united-front-ahead-of-polls
tttp://www.foroyaa.gm/modules/news/article.php?storyid=7869
(1)PDOIS is willing to concede the Primary idea. (2)PDOIS is willing to concede equal representation of political parties in favour of proportional representation to select a flag bearer (3)PDOIS is willing to cede putting a candidate for flag bearer in favour of an independent candidate.
Now how did Gainako missed all this and instead is resorting to slander of the PDOIS and Halifa Sallah. Why don't you report facts as they are instead of pursuing biased and unbalanced reporting to win the sympathies of certain sections of your readership. For five years UDP have been cajoling the rest of the opposition to sit on the same table with them because they have fresh ideas about coalition building. For give good years they have been hoodwinking the public by politicking in the dark. And for five years sensible people have been telling you that they are an empty barrel with nothing new up their sleeve except a UDP led alliance. This one trick pony have wasted our time for five good years only to come up with their boring and predictable 'rabbit from the hat' stunt. |

STGDP SUPPORTS THE UDP INITIATIVE
As we wait patiently for the outcome of the coalition talks, it is very clear that a whole lot is riding on it, and in fact the future of our country is at stake. For most of us who have been part of the coalition effort, we are cautiously optimistic knowing the difficulty of finding common ground among the party leaders. Like most Gambians in the Diaspora, we are keeping our fingers crossed hoping upon hope that all the parties are well aware of the need for a deal in order to save our country. Even the cyber warriors have signed a period of détente to allow the talks to find a resolution which can lead to a coalition of all parties. As we wait, it is very clear to all the stakeholders that time is indeed against us and there is a need to wrap it up if we are going to give ourselves time to launch a winnable campaign against Jammeh. Sitting, hoping and waiting for resolution is a road that STGDP has travelled before, and that has really, affected the anxieties of members and followers of Gambian politics. Those anxieties are beginning to come through, and after series of direct talks with all of the opposition parties, the parties again are unable to come up with a coalition. All the opposition parties have indicated that the only way they can be competitive against Jammeh is through a coalition. However, just like 2006, they are still haunted by their inability to make bold concession which could bring about coalition. Now is not really the time trying to explain or justify the need of a coalition in order to give us a chance to take our country back, but to come up with a political deal that will bring all parties under one tent. The Diaspora is really seen as the bastion of opposition support, and irrespective of our partisan leanings, we are only interested in a deal that will bring about a united opposition against Jammeh come 2011. As an independent observer puts it: “not having united front against Jammeh in 2011 will without a doubt be the final nail in the coffin of bringing about change in the Gambia through peaceful political means, and opposition politics in the Gambia will be dead for a long time to come”. It will not be inconceivable for the Gambia to be stuck with the Jammeh government for the next two decades Talking about finding a deal; STGDP would like to surface critical issues we highlighted as very important if we are to find the compromise that can give us the deal for a united front. In the proposal we sent the leaders back in 2009, we highlighted some of the critical issues we deemed to be areas that need to be confronted head on if we are to come up with the compromise for a coalition: first, the selection of the leader of the united front to come from the largest opposition party, secondly, both the campaign phase and the governance phase after the opposition defeats Jammeh should be reflective of all parties, thirdly, the leader of the united front will be term limited during the transitional period and will not seek or support any candidate in 2016, and finally the transitional period will be the period focused on the restoration of democracy in the Gambia. STGDP has learned some of the details of the UDP plan for a united front, acquainted ourselves with the NADD MOU that brought all the parties together signed back in 2006, and have also read and seen the PDOIS agenda 2011. These are all commendable coalition documents and without a doubt address the challenges we are faced with in our country and how to come together, but now is the time to make the bold concession and compromise on a plan that will bring all the parties under a big tent. STGDP is urging all the parties to support the UDP initiative on the table at this juncture because it contains all aspects of the policies highlighted in all the documents. It will give us a leader that has garnered largest votes ever gotten by an opposition leader. It will also give us a transitional leader that will be term limited after the transitional period, which directly addresses the safeguards and self-perpetuating rule in the NADD MOU, and in- depth relevant policies issues highlighted in PDOIS agenda 2011. Please let us all come together and contest the 2011 election under a united front, and together we will give all Gambians the opportunity to vote and defeat president Jammeh. Finally, we can deal with losing this election under a united front, but opposition politics cannot survive another election defeat by going it alone.

More distortions, irresponsible reporting, biased and dis-orientation as GAINAKO publish this rejoinder Readers' Reaction; UDP Militant ReJoinder; A Call on Halifa Sallah' And The People of Kiang
Is the REJOINDER FROM FOROYAA Editorial : OPPOSITION UNITY, TO BE OR NOT TO BE? not clear and enough; as Gainko is aware of it days before they publish any rejoinder or any reactions; especially the comments of Maureen Grimley and to add additional headlines in article above
P:S ERROR OF JUDGEMENT/UN-PROFESSIONALISM/DISTORTION OF FACTS/BAD PUBLICITY STUNT NO.2! Who is Maureen Grimley to decide for others, announce/declare/over-rule/deliver own-verdict and granted publication rights to smear/discredit/point score on Halifa Sallah
1. PLEASE NOTE ALSO THAT THESE STATEMENTS BELOW ARE BAFFLING AS POINTED OUT ALREADY AND DESERVED A REJOINDER
""UPD, according to reports by those who attended the meetings presented a written proposal where they demanded a party led coalition to be headed by the UDP. They reported to have put everything else on the table including a popular demand for a five year transition and the flag bearer would also not contest or endorse any party or candidate after the five year transition. It was also reported that the UDP party also indicated that it was willing to have an equal representation of all opposition parties regardless of size in a UDP led government."
2. ON POINT 1. THIS WAS COMMUNICATED TO YOU DEMBA (FOR GAINAKO) WHICH YOU DID NOT CONSIDER UNDER GAMBIA-L
3. I HOPE REACTIONS OF SHAKA AMONGST OTHERS ARE FIT FOR PUBLICATION AS GAINAKO NEWS? IF PERSONAL OPINIONS ARE CONSIDERED SHAKA DESERVE A SPACE IN GAINAKO NEWS ON RELATED ISSUES? THEREFORE HIS ARTICLE IS EXPECTED TO BE EDITED AND PUBLISHED ASAP

Thanks Dalton, Demba, Prince and sister Omaga, you all wise councils
My brother kobo the real essence of politics is to disagree to agree for a common goal and I belief the Gambia is no difference despite our different aspirations to make the Gambia a Heaven on earth right?
Now, many who have never been UDP symphatisers have all come out agreeing that we indeed have made serious thoughts about other parties within the opposition camp. I knew from the unset there would be difficulties but come on be the inspiration for a better Gambia you have always been.
Be the all mighty Kobo and face realities, talk to PDOIS as we have done with UDP. I have always said here that GAMBIA is far far more to me than UDP and every thing come second when things concerning Gambia comes up/ Ousainou knew these and is bound to listen to the voice of reason when the sound rings in his ears.
I swear if PDOIS or any of the other opposition parties are right now the closest more than the UDP to oust the tyranic Jammeh regime from office and UDP refuses to join you for what ever reason, I shall publicly declare my support for PDOIS. I joined the UDP under my own free will and any leader who would not listen to me even if you may not agree with me is in my opinion not capable to lead a fragmented Gambia.
Incase you would want to hear UDP's concessions from Ousainou himself for you to belief, then try his number and am sure Ousainou would hear you out when you call him and then you would hear from him in person.
Many skeptic non UDP members have tried and came back more determined to campaign for UDP because today many are now convinced such a cercrifice is worth giving a try and trust Ousainou on. I personally have no atom of doubt in my mind that Hon. Halifa/or any of the official of the PDOIS are very much capable of running the affairs of our dear country. There is no doubt about that. But my brother right now most Gambians want to see a united opposition against the tyrant so by denying the Gambian people such a very important wish would/could affect some politicians in the future.
Am sure Gambians who truely want to see the end of the tyrant are all begining to see how far Ousainou had come in terms of cercrifices for the Gambia's shake.just to join hands in the struggle and belief in my mind without doubt, that history would always judge him fairly. Condemn where necessary and agree where possible my brother.x |

FOR A UNITED FRONT HALIFA SALLAH PDOIS TALKING AS QUOTED; "I don't know how the term (a divided opposition) emerged. A multi-party system presupposes the existence of many parties. Political parties are bound to have divergent views. If people want coalitions, they should just advocate for it without castigating the opposition. Coalitions are strategic and tactical instruments. Their nature and characteristics are determined by the realities on the ground. We stand for the creation of a grand alliance for change. Others may wish to stand alone."
"The alliance of all forces that want change is indispensable, if change is to be effected. All those who sincerely want change must work to create a grand Alliance for change." |

1. FOROYAA National News : CROWD DEFIES RAIN AT PDOIS RALLY
"The election spirit is really catching on as a large crowd gathered at the Ebony junction to witness PDOIS’ Rally on Sunday 25th September 2011. By 5 pm the ground started to swell with spectators but then came the heavy down pour and wind which made the people dash for cover.
The PDOIS leadership spoke briefly to thank the people for coming and suggested for a postponement because of the heavy down pour of rain. The people insisted that regardless, rain or sunshine they would stay to listen to the meeting. Despite many attempts to convince them that postponement was better many insisted that the meeting should continue. The popular demand prevailed.
The meeting dealt with all aspects of Gambian society under APRC leadership and maps out the way forward for the opposition in the coming election. Foroyaa will publish the details in the next edition.
The PDOIS leadership promised the public another big rally as a show of force for a united front." Foroyaa
2. RELATED 2011 Polls: Gambia Opposition Invites President to Open Debate
"Tuesday, 27 September 2011 01:04
(Africareview) - Gambia's opposition PDOIS has invited President Yahya Jammeh, his Cabinet ministers and MPs to an open debate on the state television ahead of November 24 presidential poll. People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism Secretary General Halifa Sallah told a rally in Serekunda that President Jammeh and his team should resign and let others progressively run the affairs of the state, if they were honest.
Mr Sallah said his invitation to the president and his government was open. “They can choose their venue, time and topic on issues of national interest to be shown on the national television, Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS),” Mr Sallah told an applauding youthful crowd.
The heavily-indebted Gambia is, in the next decade, expecting to graduate over 300,000 students from high school to join the long list of job seekers, amid the growing rate of unemployment.
The veteran politician spoke of the depressed Gambian economy and the collapse of parastals like Gambia Public Transport Cooperation. “The speedy collapse of businesses and development projects in the country are all attributes of the bad governances of the Jammeh administration,” lamented Mr Sallah
PDOIS recommended that all opposition parties select 10 delegates from each of the seven electoral regions to attend a convention to elect one candidate for the contest to end President Jammeh’s 17-year-old rule. The recommendation states that all opposition parties would approve a list of wise men and women to participate as delegates, who would then elect one candidate by secret ballot.
It proposes the taking of an oath to serve only one term in order to rectify all the major shortcomings of the present order and then hand over to a democratically president.
“The local and international media and other important institutions in Africa and abroad would give coverage to the convention and provide enough publicity to the candidate nationally and internationally,” proposed the Gambian sociologist cum politician on behalf of his party.

FOROYAA NEWS Editorial : OPPOSITION UNITY, TO BE OR NOT TO BE?
" Turn at every corner, sit in any vous, visit any home, talk to any foreign diplomat, read any online Gambian paper, listen to any conversation among ordinary people from Kartong to Koina; the concerns are the same and the conclusion is that if the opposition fails to unite the election would have been lost even before the contest.
The international community appears to be displaying fatigue and have adopted a wait and see approach to the 24 November Presidential Elections. Neither the ruling party nor the opposition appears to be in their list of priorities. There is a danger that the Gambia may become increasingly isolated unless the ruling party and the opposition take measures that would inspire hope.
The opposition is still behind doors negotiating the terms to establish a United Front. Will they or will they not unite? That is the primary question. Some say the talks are already in tatters. However no opposition party has come out to say that it is out of the talks. Hence it could be fairly said that an announcement is what will make or break the camp of the opposition. The speculations should be put aside while we wait for the final announcement.
The ruling party, however, is not taking anything for granted. It has eliminated all distinction between state and party. The tour of the President was relayed over GRTS on a daily basis. This was followed by the transformation of the Cabinet room into a forum for political propaganda on behalf of the ruling party. Now the Ministry of Youths is linked to the APRC youth mobiliser’s tour of the country.
Prior to the tour the youth mobiliser got footballs and other sporting gears, drinks and other forms of support from the business community. He is now accompanied by Ministers and is making promises to establish shops for young people throughout the country. The GRTS is giving them coverage on TV and Radio. They refer to different regions as no go area for the opposition even though the opposition parties are also conducting their own tours in the same areas. Manipulation of the state media is therefore leading to the sending of the wrong signals to the Gambian population.
The promises to establish youth farms and youth consumer shops reminds Foroyaa of the early days of the coup of 22nd July when members of the July 22nd Movement were asked to established shops and the cooperative movement was utilised to import condiments such onions, etc for sale. Eventually, many shops closed and the Youth enterprise programme went into a crisis after the falling apart of the pioneers. Over 15 years have elapsed and no one could honestly identify significant enterprises owned by youths.
The development strategy of the party leans towards establishing farms for the members of Cabinet and consumer enterprises by the party leader that is providing fodder for charity. The items for charity cover things like rice, oil, meat, sugar, milk and so on and so forth. Will the APRC leadership hand over their enterprises to the youth so that they become producers rather than beggars in need of patronage? The future will well what type of Youth enterprises will emerge before the elections and how many youths will be engaged." Foroyaa

Last 2 lines of the above post refer:
"well what type of Youth enterprises will emerge before the elections and how many youths will be engaged."
If the vast majority of "youth" have no money to start an enterprise,it would surely be a good idea for any administration to make loans (repayable of course not for FREE ) to those willing to make a better life for themselves and create employment by the success of their enterprises, rather than just talk about "youth enterprise"
I remember some time ago, although I cannot find the topic, that a vehicle fell from a ferry and had to be recovered from the river by a diver, who was this diver? a toubab of a certain age, because there was no young Gambian capable of doing this work. |
"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
