Update on progress of opposition talks proceedings, working on unity to salvage the country; the issues, substance and what is at forefront of Public thinking in this topic;

The opposition is still behind doors negotiating the terms to establish a United Front. Will they or will they not unite? That is the primary question. Some say the talks are already in tatters. However no opposition party has come out to say that it is out of the talks. Hence it could be fairly said that an announcement is what will make or break the camp of the opposition. The speculations should be put aside while we wait for the final announcement. Foroya Editorial

PDOIS Calls on Jammeh to Resign

ALREADY COVERED AND RELATED WITH MY POST ON THESE STATEMENTS 2011 Polls: Gambia Opposition Invites President to Open Debate

"Tuesday, 27 September 2011 01:04

(Africareview) - Gambia's opposition PDOIS has invited President Yahya Jammeh, his Cabinet ministers and MPs to an open debate on the state television ahead of November 24 presidential poll. People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism Secretary General Halifa Sallah told a rally in Serekunda that President Jammeh and his team should resign and let others progressively run the affairs of the state, if they were honest.

Mr Sallah said his invitation to the president and his government was open. “They can choose their venue, time and topic on issues of national interest to be shown on the national television, Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS),” Mr Sallah told an applauding youthful crowd.

The heavily-indebted Gambia is, in the next decade, expecting to graduate over 300,000 students from high school to join the long list of job seekers, amid the growing rate of unemployment.

The veteran politician spoke of the depressed Gambian economy and the collapse of parastals like Gambia Public Transport Cooperation.
“The speedy collapse of businesses and development projects in the country are all attributes of the bad governances of the Jammeh administration,” lamented Mr Sallah

PDOIS recommended that all opposition parties select 10 delegates from each of the seven electoral regions to attend a convention to elect one candidate for the contest to end President Jammeh’s 17-year-old rule. The recommendation states that all opposition parties would approve a list of wise men and women to participate as delegates, who would then elect one candidate by secret ballot.

It proposes the taking of an oath to serve only one term in order to rectify all the major shortcomings of the present order and then hand over to a democratically president.

“The local and international media and other important institutions in Africa and abroad would give coverage to the convention and provide enough publicity to the candidate nationally and internationally,” proposed the Gambian sociologist cum politician on behalf of his party.

1. MAAFANTA.COM BY George B.N. Ayittey, Ph.D. Aiding and Abetting Tyranny in The Gambia

"Opposition parties constitute the other part of the counter-force. In too many places, the opposition lack focus, hopelessly divided, disorganized and prone to bickering. Even worse, the message of freedom has become contaminated with religion, ideology, tribalism, secession and other sectarian issues. This has enabled African dictators to become masters at outsmarting their opponents and quashing protest. " George B.N. Ayittey, Ph.D.

2. THE DAILY NEWS COMMENTARY BY D.A. JAWO ON Fading Hopes for Opposition United

"We ask all our citizens to be an integral part of the change they seek by getting involved in whatever capacity suits them. Change is always a difficult task and along the way it is easy to become despondent, fearful, tired, angry, and sometimes be tempted to throw in the towel. But because the cause we have embarked upon is a just one that must be pursued, we must all strive harder to achieve these important goals. We however, can do it only if we come together as one and face the opponent. This cause is bigger than any individual or group of individuals."Lawyer Ousainou Darboe (Leader)UDP New Year Message 2011

"We therefore hope that the leadership of all political parties in the country shall bear in mind that leadership is not an entitlement or a right ascribed to be monopolised by any particular individual, family, ethnic group or other lineages; on the contrary, it is a duty to be entrusted by the people, irrespective of their individual characteristics, to persons of their choice regardless of their origin. This duty to lead should be performed to promote the welfare of all, without fear or favour, affection or ill will."

"What all Gambians who wish the country well and who are truly committed to democratic change should be saying is that, the APRC leadership has already overstayed. 30 years of one person leadership in the first Republic and 17 years of one person leadership in the second Republic is enough. We need a Government that will have the political will to create the instruments, Institutions and political culture which will make it impossible for one person to preside over the affairs of the Republic for more than ten years. Genuine democrats in the Gambia should spare no effort in campaigning for an end to self perpetuating rule in the Gambia."

"This calls for them to innovate strategies and tactics to overcome the disadvantage. The Gambian people should evaluate each strategy and tactics to determine what could be more effective in yielding the desired results. The entire wrangling or clamour between so called UDP and PDOIS supporters is not based on evaluation of strategies and tactics put forward by the two parties to effect democratic change in 2011."

Very good pieces of information Brother Kobo. The fact is that this regime will not want to let Halifa or any informed and clear Gambian to address the public using radio and TV. Halifa's proposal to invite the Jammeh regime including captain himself will not be honoured. Jammeh is afraid to face Halifa. The two will never meet on public platform. Tell you the other truth; captain Jammeh is afraid to join any forum for open discussion. That is why he has wailers on every other Gambian forum making loads of noise.

Good job that Halifa invited Jammeh and bad enough Jammeh will not accept to face truth in public. Jammeh is grand deceptor of Gambians. He is not transparent.

1. THE DAILY NEWS WITH Abdou Karim Sanneh Gambia’s Unending Constitutional Coup d’état

A GAMBIAN OPINION QUOTED FROM 1.;
"The fragmentation of opposition parties on the basis of nationalist tribal politics and selfish individualist ambition of power struggle for leadership, have continued to put The Gambia in the map of nation-states stuffed and starved for a political change, for yelling to functioning democracy and rule of law.

With the decline of opposition party support, our country is virtually a one party state.

The political terrain in The Gambia since 1994 is a transition from one form of coup d’état to another. "

2. RELATED STGDP SUPPORTS THE UDP INITIATIVE

3.CONTINUING THE UPDATES FROM RELATED TOPIC UNDER 2. ON OPPOSITION TALK PROCEEDINGS, DAILY NEWS REPORTS BREAKING NEWS THAT; Talks for Opposition Unity Collapsed

Friday, October 14, 2011

"Talks for the much hyped Gambian opposition united front ahead of the crucial Nov.24 presidential elections have finally collapsed, an opposition leader, who begged for anonymity, told The Daily News.

“Yes, it’s true that we could not reach to terms because of our different political and ideological believes,” the unnamed opposition leader disclosed.

Gambia is gearing up for a ‘decisive’ electoral cycle – presidential in November 24, 2011, parliamentary in March 2012 and local government elections in 2013.

Widely viewed as the favorite candidate, Gambia’s military-turned civilian president, Yahya Jammeh will be seeking for a fourth five-year term of office.

Gambian opposition parties boldly came under one umbrella ahead of the 2006 presidential elections, resulting in the formation of NADD. But things fell apart shortly before the polls as main opposition UDP and NRP made an eleventh hour withdrawal.

Although UDP and NRP went ahead and form an alliance, and PDOIS, PPP and NDAM remained under NADD, nonetheless both alliances suffered an embarrassing defeat to President Yahya Jammeh amid a wider voter apathy.

There have been growing demands by opposition sympathisers for opposition parties to unite to be able to end President Jammeh’s seeming self-perpetuating rule, but after months of closed door negotiations, talks for yet another opposition unity have finally collapsed, slimming down hopes of a ‘new Gambia’ come Nov.24.

Our unimpeachable source said, the opposition leaders will have their final meeting today (Friday 14th October, 2011), but that will be just for formality sake.

With faded united opposition, Jammeh will contest against a weaker, fragmented opposition that have been suffering declining votes since the country’s return to multi party politics in 1996 following the 1994 coup led by Jammeh."
