I notice almost everyday in the news that some official or minister in the Gambia is being sacked. What explains this continous sacking? Are these power plays? Accusations of corruption? Any other explanations? If there are responsibilities, this might be disruptive to those who remain in the chain of command?? and what about the people who are suppose to be receiptients of services....

| i think some people are being sacked becasue they have disagreed with a policy or something that has been said. I get the feeling right now that a certain leader is clearing out the house, settling a few old scores. But from what has been mentioned on bantaba a few have been caught with their hands in the cookie jar (corruption). |

Thanks Kobo for the articles. I am wondering how many people have been sacked and replaced and then rehired etc. It seems like a dizzying human merry go round. Wonder how many people are sacked in a year...
I'm assuming that when someone is sacked from the government, there is no unemployment and other services. It could be discouraging if the worker is paid regularly (????), no salary could be difficult for families among other things. If these sackings are based on power plays, then there needs to be protection of workers...but who is going to implement it...

Kobo and all Not to get off topic, but have found some very detailed and interesting articles in Seneweb www.seneweb.com incase you haven't seen it.
If you use Google, to access Seneweb, on the right of the listing, click on translate, that way for those challenged in French :) you may access a good number of English articles on Gambia and many other fascinating topics of interest.... |

Heres one more off the topic posting, but interesting on Freedom News from the Seneweb site....
Heres an excerpt below. for the entire article pls see website address http://www.seneweb.com/news/article/2849.php
The press freedom organisation added: “The climate in which Gambian journalists work is totally poisonous. The instigators and perpetrators of this plot must be identified and punished. We reserve the right to be co-plaintiffs in any actions which Pa Nderry Mbai may bring before the British or US courts.”
The person who hacked into the Freedom Newspaper site on the night of 22 May was a British Telecom client using the IP address of an Internet user based in the British city of Southampton. The hacker erased all of its content and replaced the welcome page with a message purportedly signed by Mbai.

hear is a tale of sackings amonngs ordinary people. in january this year the new owner of the Senegambia sacked the entire entertainment staff who were all gambians and replaced them with seneglese, reason because they were cheaper and more professional. Just like that he can come in and sack people. Second thing he did just outside the hotel on the beach was a little row of stalls, each stall selling different things but paying rent, he ordered them to move away. the new owner is lebanese. things are changing in gambia and not always for the good. |

Jambo, was that that the article where the vendors had been selling on someone's land and he decided to take it back to build or do something. Now the entire market vendors are trying to figure out what they can do and its wrecking their livelihood. Mahalo. Faye

| Thanks Kobo Mon Dieu! Its interesting he's -- Jammeh saying that the women and youth do all the work and the men nada... is that the case? Is this a divide and conquer strategy? Its not very respectful to say the least towards the people, the families. |

Can anyone update this. On my recent trip i learnt that the vendors just outside African village hotel had been given notice/24 hours to quit the site, some had been there for over 15 years. Can anyone advise what has happened to them. stupid question but would the local Akollo step in and try and save the land and jobs for them. |
