Gambia: The Security Men Hold Press Confrence

The Gambia Journal (Banjul)

August 30, 2006
Posted to the web August 30, 2006

The National Security Services today, Tuesday 29th August, held a press conference at the Police Headquarters in Banjul. The purpose of the conference was to clarify the stand of the Security forces following some incidents involving some members of the security forces and the opposition UDP/NRP supporters during the nomination exercise a day earlier, on Monday 28th August 2006.

Speaking to journalists, the Chief of Defense Staff, Lang Tombong Tamba, told journalists that it was their constitutional mandate to defend the territorial integrity of the country and that all other Gambians must cooperate with them in the exercise of their duties. Later speaking to the press, Mr. Harry Sambou, who is the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, which is the much feared political police, also said that he saw no reason why any body should feel that the security forces hold any grudge against any particular groups of Gambians. Though Mr. Sambou is supposed to app ear neutral as a senior civil servant, he could be seen dressed in the specially fabricated propaganda "ashobi" clothing of President Jammeh's APRC party and joining the march to Banjul procession.

Several confrontational incidents erupted on Monday when thousands of UDP/NRP supporters refused tom be stopped from following their leaders through a cordoned-off area surrounding the IEC building where the nominations were being done. The crowds insisted on passing through the barriers erected by the security forces as they saw supporters of President Jammeh did about an hour earlier. The other opposition party, NADD, has also been calling for the release of one of its militant, Buba Sanyang, who is being allegedly held by the NIA for reasons yet to be disclosed.
