I have a little sympathy with BAC in the fact that I agree that some from the community are dumping their rubbish on the market pile, even so this shows that rubbish collection from local communities needs to be improved by BAC,I therefore think its a BAC management issue and not a market issue, will anything change,of course not too much work to look into the reasons and provide a solution, who will pay the wages,? who will buy the fuel? we can't afford to pay extra labour, the same happens in all councils all over the world.

Concern over indiscriminate waste dumping at Brikama Car park Africa » Gambia Tuesday, August 09, 2011 People are raising concerns over the indiscriminate dumping of waste at the Brikama car park, something that could pose a health hazard.
Speaking to the Daily Observer Monday, Ansumana Ceesay, vice president of the Gambia National Transport Control Association (GNTCA) at the park, called on the management of the Brikama Area Coucil (BAC) to come and collect the waste from the place, saying the garbage has started generating maggots and emitting a very bad odour. ‘‘We have called on the BAC on several times to come and collect the garbage from the car park but nothing was done,’’ he added.
Mama Manneh, GNTCA cashier said they don’t want the park to become a dumping site, as it is meant for human activities and so should always be kept clean and healthy.
When contacted for his reaction, BAC’s public relations officer, Modou Jonga denied allegations that the Council is not collecting waste from the park. He said BAC always cleans and collect all the wastes in the park. He added that they have even assigned a tractor to be collecting the waste from there every evening.
PRO Jonga asserted that the waste is not generated by those using the park, but by people within the community. He further stated that the Council has been doing all it can to stop the unhealthy practice, but unfortunately, they have not been getting support from the people in that regard. "We have even taken legal action against defaulters," he disclosed.
He further disclosed that mango sellers are the major culprits, and that the Council has already ordered them to vacate the park and go to the Sandika.
Lamin Colley, a driver at the Brikama car park said the unhygienic condition of the place has made work difficult for them, especially when it rains. A juice seller at the garage, Lamarana Bah also expressed dissatisfaction with the unhygeinic condition of the Brikama park. Author: Amadou Jallow

I worked on the waste management project for Bakoteh. If the LAC's had abided by the conditions of World Bank there would be a new dumpsite at Tambana & the one at Bakoteh would not be looking and smelling like it had never been cleared! |

Well it's Gambia and these things happen in all "projects" that are given by those who try to "help" by improving facilities for the average Gambian I am not at all surprised. Thanks for sharing.
