My first manuscript is now ready to be published. I started this manuscript many years ago, and had worked it through many revisions. I have said to myself that I would never attempt to publish this manuscript, until I have that innermost satisfaction that it is ready.
I think it is ready. Although I still have the urge to continue working on it and delay its publication, however, I am confident that I am now ready to publish this manuscript. I am now looking for a publisher.
If anyone can help towards this endeavor, it would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to self publish. That would be a last resort.
I would put the genre for this manuscript as non-fiction, although some of the settings are fictional.
"Inside the keringting house, .....greeted yet the arrival of another bundle of joy. A baby boy was born. The rhun-palms that held the roof of the house together slanted dangerously to one side, like tall coconut trees that solemnly bowed before an angry gusty wind. The gaping holes in the walls of the house were filled, from where the cement-sand plastering had fallen, with old clothes that kept the whistling wind at bay."
The above is a paragraph lifted from the first page of the manuscript.
"Around this time in the morning, many women made the short trek to the village well, going back and forth, to fill the clay pots of water. The clay pots of different sizes were placed inside the mud or corrugated kitchens, and in the middle of the compounds under the shade of a tree. They provided drinking water to the family members and visitors. A cup tied to a long string was used to scoop the water from the clay pots. The clay pots were placed under a mound of dirt or red earth, usually inside an old bowl or small bucket that kept the water cold." This paragraph is lifted from the seventh chapter.
By quoting these two paragraphs I want to give a sample of the narrative; it is simple, descriptive and captures the readers imagination to the minute details.
Well, well, people try to sell their books after it is published. It looks like I am trying to sell a manuscript before it is even published. If I succeed I want to have this manuscript in book shelves before the end of the year.

Good luck. |

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

My manuscript has now been submitted for publication. It is to be published by Authorhouse, an independent publishing company. The process has just started, and with the Rapid Release option, it will be released with half the production time it would have taken.
When the book is finally released, I have no doubts that Gambian literary contribution will be taken to a higher heights. My publishing consultant has demonstrated so much interest and excitement in this work, it makes me believe that he finds something in the manuscript that I did not. But we will all find out soon.
I will be sharing details of the production until the book is released. Regards. |

The book production is in progress. The interior design and manuscript evaluation has been completed. The only thing left is the cover design and the application for the LCCN (I believe that is the library of congress number. ISBN/SKU numbers have already been assigned. The book will come in three formats: 6x9 Case Bound Hardcover E-BOOK 6X9 Perfect Bound Soft Cover
The only issue I have right now is the title for the book. I conceived the title for the book long before I started writing the story years ago. To my surprise, when I google the title I discovered that it is associated with a song and a musical group, and there is also a book that bears the same title.
Since I want to create something utterly unique, I am compelled to change the title, and find something else that can relate to the concept and story of the book. I am trying to find within the manuscript itself an apt phrase that can best relate to the story for a title.
Once the remaining things to be done have been completed, and a title change has been effected, I will discuss in great detail about the contents of the book.

The Drumbeats Of Afdie: The word Afdie is a corruption of the words Half Die. It pertains to a Malaria epidemic in Banjul, in the past, in which half the inhabitants had died. Afdie is in the southern part of the city of Banjul.
The Drumbeats Of Afdie is the story of Omadi, a Gambian immigrant who came to the United States. It describes the life of Omadi both in the Gambia and in the United States. The nuances of the American immigration system becomes a focal point in the book, as Omadi is torn between staying in the country as an illegal immigrant or going back home to the Gambia.
This 214 page book is authentically Gambian; Banjul and Afdie features prominently in the book, as the author deliberates on and accentuates the rich social and cultural tapestry that is part of Afdie's history.
As the story of Omadi evolves, so does the narration about gods and oracles which gives a deeper appreciation to this African phenomenon.
The original title of the book was the Tears of Laughter, however, as I come to learn later this also is the title for another published book. Since Afdie is central to the story of Omadi, The Drumbeats Of Afdie is quite apt for this title.
The change of title has been effected. I have just completed editing the proofs for the book and have sent it back to the publishers. With my final approval the proofs would be sent to the printers.
We are now looking at a very short period for the book to be released. I will share that information when I have it.

Toubab, Thanks for your comment. As a friend of mine said to me, and someone who is very familiar with this project, that the expectations of publishing a book is like the joys of giving birth. You have created something in your mind, and after having it incubated in the womb of your ideas, you are now ready to share it with the rest of the world.
As an amateur aspiring writer, and having gone through the pains of writing something that can be published, you can imagined my sense of relief that this project has finally been done with and over.
I hope to sell a lot of books. |
