If anybody in this forum is interested in trying out Linux, I got Ubuntu Linux version 5.04 installation and live cds for both the Intel x86 and AMD Athlon processors to give out. Drop me a line and I will send you one.

as a BIG linux fan, i was pleased to see the ubuntu article. personally i have used SUSE Linux and i think its better than windows. of particular interest to me is the opportunities it(linux) offers africa to leap frog into the IT age. i think in the absence of piracy african gov/univeristies would find it very difficlut to develop systems as they will not be able to afford software licences!

linux is part of a bigger program called open source software, which means the code and distribution are free. that is why Ousman can publicly offer the CDs without breaking the law. infact you can even get it free from him and sell it for a profit so longer as the buyer can aslo do the same. you get the picture.

but seriously, with an open source code it is easily customisable and thats the advantage for starting local software industries & jobs in africa for example.

finally linux offers choice and teaches one how to use a computer not how to use windows! you surf the web with a web-browser(not just IE) and write letters with a word processor not only WORD.

the day microsft follows ENRON, a lot of people would be computer illiterate

there is an interesting article on linux in africa at

Njucks,
I have tried every flavor of Linux that I know of. I am presently running SUSE Linux 10.0 on a machine in my basement. It is wonderful to deal with. I work in a predominantly windows shop but out of the four machines that constitutes my home network, only one is a windows system. That happens to be for my wife.

I still have the ubuntu Linux cds.A system running ubuntu is not that different from suse. In fact I love both of them.

Apple and OSF began a project to port Linux to a variety of Power Macintosh platforms running on top of OSF's implementation of Mach. This led to a core called "osfmk", and the overall system was MkLinux. The first release of this "Linux hosted on Mach" system, based on Mach and Linux 1.3.x, came out as MkLinux DR1 in early 1996. Later releases moved to Linux 2.0.x and beyond. One of the releases was incorporated into Apple's Reference Release. Note that MkLinux uses a single-server approach: the monolithic Linux kernel runs as a single Mach task.

Mac OS X uses osfmk as base (with BSD running as part of the kernel itself), and includes many MkLinux enhancements.

PS

I gave the above synopsis assuming that you already knew Linux is an operating system just like Windows and Mac. The only difference been the proprietary nature of windows and Macs.

Thanks to you guys for dropping lines that are of great value to the community.I think this portion of this site represents a fruitful venue. I urge all its contributors to keep up the effort.

For those interested in linux, you can also try the Fedora Core 4 OS.It is open source and cracks well as a server/work station and YES, it is free. (www.fedoracore.com)

If you are thinking about hosting your own website consider FC 4.It comes with Apache,Mysql, php and some other useful database applications.

I just registered to this site today and am impressed to see my brothers and sisters coming forward with these great ideas at this magnitude.
