The MIT Media Lab has launched a new research initiative to develop a $100 laptop—a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world's children. To achieve this goal, a new, non-profit association, One Laptop per Child (OLPC), has been created. The initiative was first announced by Nicholas Negroponte, Lab chairman and co-founder, at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland in January 2005.
Please note that the $100 laptops—not yet in production—will not be available for sale. The laptops will only be distributed to schools directly through large government initiatives....source: http://laptop.media.mit.edu/
The laptops will have installed on them open source software...linux in particular. But the broader goal... to train mostly under privilege children in the developing world is a noble cause.

this is a noble and great idea. lets have hope. this will certainly close the digital gap! and really contribute to improving the lifes/literacy of the billions in India and millions in Africa.
i read about it and how it works but my only concern is how will it work in those countries? telephone lines, power , etc! i guess people always find a solution, in the most remote parts of africa people have mobile phones and they manage to re-charge them so how.
there is also the Simputer launched couple of years back in India, i wonder how its going.

Njucks, Availability or lack thereof of power will not be an issue with these $100 systems. The yellow handle is the power mechanism. You charge the battery by winding the handle. With regards to internet availability, they are thinking of setting up wireless networks to hook them to the internet. |

| Sounds like a brilliant idea. Has it been tested anywhere? |
