i just got an email from a student from the gambia asking about engineering as a career. i asked myself if this interest is shared by many young people. i think the answer would be yes. one cannot really explain the importance of a univeristy in the development process of a nation, and the UTG is a great national institution although still young but doing great.
but i would like to ask if it's time for a department of computer science or engineering? if so which one mechanical/electrical etc??
my view is that a Dept of Computer Science would be great considering the explosion in IT education in the gambia.almost every grade twelve student wants to go to jollof, business training etc computer science is also the cheapest option i think as you dont have to worry yet about expensive research lab equipment. a good starting point would be to learn from India which is benefiting from years of investment in IT education especially in IITs(indian institutes of technology)built across the country. Gambia could easily hire Indian Professors through a Tech. Assist. Program etc.
of course what this means is that with english as a major language we could easily built a software industry and also become an outsourcing centre both regionally and targeting europe etc providing jobs as well
so is it time for a Department of computer science at the university of the gambia?
i have to agree with you njucks. as a former IT teacher it is something which interests me greatly.
a friend of mine is currently studying for a certificate which will enable him to teach english internationally. he is hoping to travel and spend a year or two in different countries doing this but i think in some ways it would be better if he was going to teach computer science.
