"Three children in one compound are victims of the road accident which occurred on Wednesday 7th September 2011 as young people and adults scramble for biscuits thrown from the convoy of the president. One could imagine the current state of mind of the parents and relatives of the three children who are victims of the accident. It is too much for a single family to bury two children, Mustapha Jatta and Sarata Sanyang while Dawda Jatta is at the hospital suffering from serious injuries.
The people of Busumbala village in the Western Region, on Wednesday 7th September 2011 witnessed the tragic death of many people who were in the street as the convoy of the President was passing. Eye witnesses saw biscuits being thrown from the President’s convoy while people, young and old scrambled for them.
Mustapha is said to be an orphan whose father passed away four months ago. The mother is still mourning the death of her husband. Who could determine the scale of the misery of this mother?
Foroyaa has dispatched a reporter to investigate the details of the accident. What is important is to focus on a previous editorial by this paper calling on the President to consider taking the biscuits to schools and other public institutions for distribution to children in an orderly and organised fashion.
We indicated that tourists have taken pictures of Gambians scrambling for biscuits thrown to them from a passing vehicle. Injuries have occurred and deaths are also associated with the practice.
We have said that in developed countries even pets are provided food on bowls and plates. Gambian children deserve being given packets of biscuits without having to wrestle with adults to pick them from the ground. We hope that our concerns will be the concerns of all those who have the authority to put this chapter to an end." Foroyaa
