One-time ruling APRC party critic and now Governor of the Lower River Region, Lamin Waa Juwara, has given his views on the forthcoming elections, stating that the current breed of opposition politicians in the country has “lost credibility.” “I think the basic objective is to have a free, fair and transparent election, and that will give the process credibility. I have confidence in the ability of the IEC to deliver, and I also hope that the main players in the political arena are all aspiring to have a free and fair election,” Juwara said in an interview with The Point at the weekend. Juwara, who is also the leader of the opposition National Democratic Alliance Movement (NDAM) is of the view that the ruling APRC party is the strongest party that has mobilized lots of people in this country. “As far as the opposition is concerned, they have lost their credibility. They raised the hopes of the people and at the last minute, for personal ambition, they fell apart. Now the people are saying they are going to vote for the APRC because the APRC has credibility; the leadership is strong and they have been performing beyond our imagination,” he said, adding that the opposition cannot come back. “May be a new generation of opposition leadership, but not the old one,” he added. According to Waa Juwara, the “chances of the opposition in the forthcoming election is almost nil.” “Being an opposition operative, I know the terrain. I know what is happening in this country, and I think what happened the last time when the opposition fell out, after coming together, has discouraged the people completely,” he opined. He said that most of the people would rather vote for the APRC than vote for the opposition. “There is no doubt in the minds of the people across the country. This is what is happening,” Juwara said. He added: “As the leader of NDAM party, I will not contest the forthcoming elections, because I don’t think you should go into something just for the sake of going into it, when chances don’t exist.” He stated that the opposition had all the chances when they came together as a formidable opposition coalition. “We raised the hopes of the people, but because of personal ambitions, they (the opposition) are all stuck. Nobody is moving. This is election year, and we have very few months, but there is nothing that is moving,” he asserted. The LRR Governor urged all players in the political arena to go into the game with a clear mind that, when they lose, they should accept. “The image of this country is more important that any political leader’s ambition. If you decide to contest, you must understand that you must win or lose, but if you lose, you accept it. This is what is going to happen; they (the opposition) are going to lose. I know the terrain,” he said. He further stated that what will convince the people to vote for President Yahya Jammeh is his development agenda. “We have seen it in all aspects. The performances are really good and, really, a lot of people are convinced that he has delivered. We have seen a lot of improvements in the human rights record of this government after the transition. Things are changing, and the recent pronouncements that the President has been making has gone down well with a lot of people,” he said, adding that President Jammeh deserved to be called the “man of the people”, because he has delivered, and the country is at peace. “There are a lot of things that have been taken care of, and I think that element has given President Jammeh a higher rating than any opposition in this country. This is what is happening,” Juwara concluded. Author: Abdoulie Nyockeh Source: http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/the-opposition-have-lost-credibility-waa-juwara

One thing is certain, who ever is allied with Waa Juwara today is truely with Jammeh and that strengthened my point.PDOIS/UDP/KMC/NRP are not with Waa and do not share any opinions with him at the moment We all see him as a deserter and a betrayer who see only his selfish self. He who thinks Waa right think Yahya Jammeh right as that is Waa's view now. period! |

UPDATES;
1. DAILY OBSERVER NEWS Juwara predicts victory for President Jammeh in Nov. Poll
2. THE POINT NEWSPAPER Waa Juwara on opposition meeting on United Front
"Thursday, September 08, 2011
Lamin Waa Juwara, one-time strong opposition leader and now Governor of the Lower River Region, has lashed out at his former colleagues in the opposition, describing their recent meeting on the possibility of forming a United Front ahead of the forthcoming Presidential Election as a “futile engagement”.
Juwara, also a long-time past critic of the ruling APRC party, shifted his allegiance to the APRC in 2008, two years after the NADD alliance, of which he was then a member, lost the 2006 presidential election to incumbent President Yahya Jammeh.
His comments have come as the ruling APRC sets its eyes in three key opposition strongholds in the Lower River Region, notably the constituencies of Kiang West, Kiang Central and Jarra Central ahead of the November polls with a view to capturing them.
Speaking in an interview with this paper yesterday, the former Niamina Dankunku parliamentarian said Gambians have “lost confidence” in the opposition because, as he put it, “the opposition has dashed the hopes of the people by pulling out of the NADD alliance”.
According to Juwara, whose move to the APRC party was seen as a big blow to the opposition generally, as at now, no amount of talk by the opposition can restore that confidence.
“It will require an entire generation of new political leadership that can bring about change to attract the attention of Gambians,” he said.
Mbarodi, as he is fondly called, said for now, the overwhelming majority of Gambians have made up their minds to vote for President Jammeh and the APRC party.
“Their (APRC’s) consistency and track record so far has made them the choice of the people,” Waa added.
In Waa Juwara’s view, there is no amount of coalition that can restore the confidence of the Gambian people to the opposition side because, for him, the actions the opposition took “especially UDP and NRP is unbridled arrogance to say that they are the only people capable of leading the opposition, when they have woefully failed during the last election”.
“With presidential election just around the corner, talking about an alliance is political nonsense because nobody is listening to them,” he stated.
It would be recalled that leaders of various opposition parties in the country last week met in an undisclosed location in the Kanifing Municipality to discuss, among others, the possibility of forming an opposition alliance, which they said was in the best interest of Gambians.
Sources said the meeting, which brought together key political party leaders, was the first and will be followed by similar meetings, at least two to three more times.
While political analysts said the November polls will bring together a fragmented opposition, whose only option is to unite against incumbent President Jammeh, others said even with less than three months to go, it is not too late for the opposition parties to bury their differences and come together in an alliance if the right actions and decisions are taken.
A total number of 837, 029 (eight hundred and thirty seven thousand, twenty nine) people have registered to vote in the November polls, showing a massive increase since the last election’s figure, which was 670,336 registered voters.
