Am I reading too much into this NADD vs APRC in Wuli East bye-elections? As reported by Gainako http://www.gainako.com/news/, A UDP source was quoted as saying the party was considering not putting up a candidate to contest the bye-elections in effect giving the NADD candidate a chance to defeat the APRC instead of splitting the votes between the opposition.

Don't know how true it is, but if it is true then this is a good sign that the UDP is recognizing the reality on the ground and many hope that PDOIS will consider this a good faith effort to form some kind of a tactical alliance for the upcoming elections.

Matter of fact, another PDOIS supporter indicated that pressure could be put on PDOIS not to put up a presidential candidate even if there is no opposition unity... off course these are all speculations for now but I like the move from the UDP.

Let's hope that this will be the trend leading to the elections...

UDP have decided not to put up a candidate as we do not want to split the opposition vote. A statement will be produced in due course.

Thanks

I do not oppose unity but I oppose dumb union.

That is a step in the right direction and lets hope that cool heads will prevail from both sides to restore the confidence of the electorates that it is indeed possible to vote Jammeh out of office...

We can all disagree on many other issues but Jammeh must be voted out and there are many ways we can accomplish it!!!! For now we have a reason to hope!!

RELATED BANTABA GAMBIAN POLITICS TOPIC Will By Elections Be Held In Wuli East UNDER http://www.gambia.dk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10599

PDOIS IS COMMITTED TO NADD; HAS BEEN DOING HARD WORK FOR NADD DELIVERED TO THEM SINCE 2006 AND NO OTHER TACTICS WHICH THEY DIDN'T BARGAINED FOR WOULD UNDERMINE ITS GOALS (CHALLENGING APRC IN ALL FRONTS)

THE VOTES FOR THE OPPOSITION WILL BE SPLIT WITHOUT A UNITED FRONT, COALITION OR ALLIANCE; FOR EACH PARTY WOULD COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER (PARTISAN POLITICS)

Thanks for sharing guys! I wish Mr. Touray the best of luck. I am glad that the other opposition parties has decided not to put a candidate to contest against him. They should not only stop at that, but further join him (totally in support) in redeeming the seat from the APRC.

My knowledge of Mr. Touray and his capabilities goes beyond I can put in writing. He is one of those whose writings I fancy and admire. He is humble too, just like his partners at their camp. Mr. Touray will bring the much needed unity, development and peace in the area. He is one that reasons very well.

As a result of his value to Gambians and humanity at large, the man needs all our support, and I mean all of us should support him. He deserves to win...and his likes are what we need in that National Assembly to balance things out.

I wish him the best!

Yero

GAINAKO WROTE;
"Its NADD vs APRC in Wuli East By-Elections; Signs of Tactical Opposition Alliance??

The ground has been set for the much-awaited bye-election in Wuli East constituency, after the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) and the opposition National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) on Monday nominated their candidates for the elections.

While the ruling party fielded one Saidou Sabally, a native of Passamas Fula Kunda in Wuli East district, the opposition NADD's candidate is Suwaibou Touray, the same candidate who lost to the ruling party's candidate in the last legislative elections.

Presided over by IEC official Alieu Momar Njie, the nominations took place at the Independent Electoral Commission's regional office in Basse Mansajang Kunda.

The bye-election, which followed the death of Bekai Camara, National Assembly Member for Wuli East last month, was scheduled for 28th April 2011.

Speaking to this reporter in Basse, shortly after his nomination yesterday, Saidou Sabally the APRC candidate expressed optimism that he will sweep the polls. He said the ruling APRC will register even more votes in Wuli East this time around than in the last legislative election.

NADD candidate Suwaibou Touray told journalists that all political parties in this country have their programs and policies, and that his party's policy has been proven 100% in The Gambia.

According to him, there must be winners and losers in any election, noting that the current situation in The Gambia shows that people must participate in elections or else democracy will fail.

"The type of development we have in this country is cosmetic development," Touray said, adding that the priority of the people of Wuli is the construction of roads, and that the ferry service is in a deplorable situation.

Meanwhile, Yankuba Colley the APRC National Mobiliser told this reporter that there is no single opposition party in the country that can challenge the APRC.

In his view, come this bye-election and any other election, the APRC will sweep the polls.

I am sorry to say that the UDP will not join a PDOIS/NADD candidate in the campaign for the simple reason that in 2005, the UDP leader cut his American holiday short and returned to The Gambia to campaign for Halifa Sallah in that year's bye-election. Unfortunately, this has never been reciprocated by PDOIS/NADD. It therefore doesn't make any sense for the UDP to extend the same magnaminity to them.

PDOIS also continue to be adamant in their refusal to talk to the UDP leader on the coalition issue, which makes it impossible for the UDP to coordinate anything with them.

However, the UDP Youth wing, which was on a consultation tour of the URR in preparation of the upcoming voter registration exercise, was given specific instruction to ask the constituency chiarman in Wuli East o urge UDP supporters to vote for a opposition candidate in this bye-election, whoever that is.

This is the best the UDP can do in this given circumstance and I hope it will be appreciated by all.

Thanks

Demba
On our last weekend Diaspora conference call, all the participants agree on the principle that, UDP will instruct its supporters to vote for the PDOIS candidate. We also appreciate that, our stance may not be appreciated by the other camp however, what is important is the wider good for the Gambia. The UDP has more MPs in the parliament than other opposition parties, however, we also know that, taking certain decision will be spin and use as a strength of opponents. It is not easy satisfying political opponents, however with our strategy ahead, we will do what is right for the Gambia regardless of how anyone play that out.
I hope that, the people of WUlli vote Suwaibou in the coming days.
However, we shouldn't lose sight that, the bigger price to end the dictatorship is the Presidency.

CIRCUMSTANCES DICTATES THAT ALL OPPONENTS HAS A COMMON ENEMY OR COMMON GOAL AND IF ITS ABOUT NATIONAL INTERESTS; CREATION OF NADD REPRESENTED THAT BUT OTHER FACTIONS DECIDED TO DUMP IT

"NADD candidate Suwaibou Touray told journalists that all political parties in this country have their programs and policies, and that his party's policy has been proven 100% in The Gambia."

ON THAT NOTE OTHER OPPOSITION PARTIES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO BANK ON THIS BY-ELECTIONS TO UNDERMINE IT, "STEAL CREDIBILITY" AND HARD-WORK OF PDOIS FOR NADD

COMMON ENEMY

Oh, you mean the people who vote/support and work for APRC is the enemy? What if they see you as an enemy?

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

Mawdo Kobo:

We can take this one...i.e. to avoid split of the votes, all others decided to allow Mr. Touray to contest and represent them. I do not see any qualms in it. We shouldn't invite any debate that will tilt us to that end either. I and Suntou will campaign from the UK & US for Mr. Touray....Suntou, I need your Wulli list, at least 100 or more youths to call on the phone.

Thanks,
Yero

reported by kobo...........The information received by this reporter that the opposition in Wuli East irrespective of party affiliation refused to accept any party putting up any candidate other than Suwaibou Touray is now proven to be correct. A people´s Alliance has therefore emerged in Wuli East on the side of the opposition. For all intent and purposes this by election is a contest to be closely monitored. "

You are the most misinformed guy on this forum kobo concerning wuli, you don't know the place so its better you say what you know. Don't you know UDP has a very very large following in Wuli East.Swaibou is an uncle of mine and It was Swaibou who made the approach to the UDP chairman in the area so as to discuss collective effort to have only one force against APRC knowing the fact that sarahule community in the last election voted enmasse for Late Camara that made Swaibou lost. Now he wants to tap into what went wrong in the last election so as to correct that to his advantage. Therefore the above is not only false but misleading.

UDP's decision not to file up a candidate was simply to give one opposition a chance to defeat APRC and this I can proof to you when you contact Swaibou.Infact as of yesterday afternoon thursday, thousands of supporters both UDP and NADD were with him.One Lamin Barro from Barokunda told me people with UDP flags in their compounds were have Swaibou's picture next to Ousaionu,s which shows they are UDP in bone and would heed UDP'S advice to their supporters to vote opposition.

I don't know what is in our brain but Swaibou or Halifa doesnot need your support for them because you are more a divider than a uniter.

All my relatives who i Wuli are going to vote Swaibou by God's power.I spend a lot of credit each day for speak to people even people I know who are APRC.That is what swaibou needs not your rants..

Oh you rely on such?

Well I can strongly and reliably confirm to you that is not the position of MR. SWAIBOU TOURAY right now. That means there is a conflict of interest here. The guy championing Swaibou's election in the area Lamin Baro is UDP. ASK anyone even Swaibou knows.
UDP committee put their proposals and the prospects of chances if we put up a candidate and the party decided that that might give chance to the APRC candidate therefore we need to give chance to a fellow opposition who has a great chance if we pull out.

If that is not a good gesture, then I don't know what is!
