I think you all know about Neonazis in Germany. I admit it was my fault not to report the latest events in my country on the Bantaba, like the attempted murder on Ermyas M., an Ethiopia-born German engineer, in Potsdam - just to mention one of the latest cases.
Very few of these crimes are named in the statistics as 'racist motivated' and usually go almost unnoticed by the German public. A specially unappetizing detail in the Ermyas M. case was that the officials even tried to put the blame on the victim.
Only now, as the FIFA Worldcup is about to start and Germany's image is in danger, these crimes lead to a public debate. Ok, to be fair: There have been debates before, but the results... see above.
It is true that there are still many friendly, relaxed, non-racist people in Germany. But the public opinion, fueled by conservative and extreme right-wing parties and their media, changed. In most regions of the former GDR, being racist goes without saying.
The Berlin Africa Council - http://www.cybernomads.net/cn/home.cfm?p=1331 - named No-Go-Areas for Blacks, and this lead to hysterical outbursts that would be almost amusing if the topic wasn't so serious.
The most disgusting in the current debate is that our politicians seem to be more occupied with the country's loss of reputation than with the problem itself and with the safety of potential victims. After years and years of laissez-faire (a tried and tested way to get out of the line of fire yourself: allow unemployed, frustrated people to cool their anger on the defendless) they now seem very eager to show that Germany is not all racist, and that non-white people can go almost everywhere - even in Eastern Germany. Our minister of the interior, Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) denied that there are 'No-Go-Areas' and promised 'safe games' for black World Cup-visitors. But even if he could manage the latter: What about the time after the games?
To black Bantaba members: If you have any, how are your experiences with Germany, and would you recommend to visit this country?

Anti-racism & The World Cup.
FIFA World Cup and Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network have met with FIFA president and delegates that will result in a series of anti-racism measures to raise awareness and monitor any potential problems. The quarter-finals of the competition will become anti-racism days with activities taking place inside and outside the stadiums.
What measures did they undertake before The World Cup?
Senerata your absolutely correct, they are running around like headless chickens.

MJT, if you are staying in Germany during the games, I wish you a pleasant and safe time.
Sab, this is good to hear. Maybe if all work together, we can make this World Cup a demonstration of Anti-Racism, which would be high time - in Germany as well as in football.
Though, German politicians, except for a few, seem to follow an absolutely defensive strategy on this important issue - if they have any. When people like the Africa Council disturb their self-contended peace, they panick...

Sorry, Abraham, but the Avatar does not show me. It is Satang Jobarteh, a lady I would not dare to compare myself with. She regrettably died in 2005. Satang Jobarteh worked for the Wanep, the West African Network For Peacebuilding http://www.wanep.org
I am but a 'normal' German, but as the Avatar seems to be misleading, I will change it. I choose it because I like Satang Jobarteh's looks, and because she surely did a great job during her lifetime. But thanks for your approval; I hand it over to Jobarteh's memory.
I'll try to get my own avatar; I think it is possible to send your own pictures and have them converted?! |

Hello Serenata - I thinks its a good thing when you have an avater of people you admire. I was wondering who this person was, but was afraid to ask - I think I have been asking too many questions lately (really showing my ignorance). |

Kisley, why do you feel shy to ask questions? It is ok to ask, because I think one purpose of the Bantaba is that you can learn new things here.
You are right, chosing a person you admire as your avatar is a good thing, and I think it should not matter a lot if we are white or black. Hmm, I'll think it over. |

MJT, thank you! Wir schaffen das schon!
Update: Yesterday, on a public holiday (aka 'Father's Day'), many foreigners were attacked by neonazis. Only in Berlin, 14 persons have been arrested. Denmark lost a lot of its reputation during the disgusting cartoon affair, but today the Danish newspaper 'Politiken' published an article German politicians probably won't like to read....: http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/0,1518,418129,00.html
Sorry because the link is interesting only for those who speak German. |

The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) released its third report about Denmark on Tuesday May 16th 2006. Despite its praise for the progress made since the 2001 report, the new review bashed the government for not implementing several previous recommendations.
In addition, it found that 'the general climate has continued to deteriorate in Denmark, with some politicians and parts of the media constantly projecting a negative image of minority groups in general, and Muslims in particular'.
The government was also blasted for cosying up to the anti-immigrant Danish People's Party.
You can read or download the report here: http://www.coe.int/t/e/human_rights/ecri/1-ecri/2-country-by-country_approach/Denmark/Denmark_CBC_3.asp#TopOfPage |

Thanks, Momodou; I downloaded the report and will read it this evening. I also looked for the report about Germany on the EU Council site, but what I found was three years old.
Maybe those who sit in a glasshouse shouldn't throw stones, and maybe 'Politiken' was glad that now it is Germany's image which is severely spotted, but from the excerpts I read on 'Spiegel Online' I could see that what they wrote about German politics was nothing but the simple truth.

Sister Serenata, Satang is gone but she lives in you.I knew Satang while I was studying at Armitage.I am a friend to her brother Momodou. She may be gone but every one knows Satang lives on as Gambians continue to benefit from her hard work. Many women in Africa and the world are great people who contributed so extremely well to the plight of female across the globe. Its only the men folk that had made this world unbearable and dangerous. No wonder we men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Thank you very much, brother Janyanfara; I don't know if I deserve the honor. You are right: There are a lot of impressing women in Africa; some people even say that if Africa didn't have its women, the continent would be lost.
Men coming from Mars and women from Venus, oh yes, this is a nice saying. In Greek mythology, it was Aphrodite (Venus) who tamed her crude lover Ares (Mars)... |

Oh serenata, I am not from mars but venus with women.I love you all but I think if there is a next comming back,I shall ask God to make me a woman. Despite everything,a woman would be properly taken care of by parents from childhood enjoying until somebody from another see her and fall inlove with her, takes her to his house and treat her like a queen.Women are born queens and they die queens. While look at me toiling the soil to make it up inother to marry the woman of my dreams. What will I do if I can't take care of her? Will she abandon me and leave?Oh god make me a woman next time.
