Burkina Faso parliament set ablaze

BBC: Published on 30 October 2014

Protesters angry at plans to allow Burkina Faso's President Blaise Compaore to extend his 27-year-rule have set fire to parliament.

The BBC's Laeila Adjovi in the capital, Ouagadougou, say the city hall and ruling party headquarters are also in flames.

The security forces fired tear gas from a helicopter as a crowd surged towards the presidency.

MPs have suspended a vote to allow Mr Compaore to stand for re-election.

One person has been killed in the protests, reports the BBC's Yacouba Ouedraogo from the capital......

"Analysts say there will have to be genuine power sharing if the country's stability is to be improved."

I would agree with that, I doubt that any form of genuine representation of the people will come about in any system of political set up decided on by,let's face it The General and/or the interim prime minister,if it does happen it will be a first in Africa.

Burkina Faso declares Michel Kafando interim president

BBC: Pblished on 17 November 2014

Political and military leaders in Burkina Faso have chosen a former foreign minister, Michel Kafando, to be the country's interim president.

The move follows the signing of a charter on Sunday mapping out a year-long transition to elections.

Mr Kafando was one of four possible candidates for the post, including two journalists and an academic.

The army took power after President Blaise Compaore was forced to resign on 31 October during mass protests.

Lt Col Isaac Zida, who declared himself head of the West African state, has pledged to hand over power to a civilian authority.

Negotiations

The transitional charter will see an interim legislative chamber and a transitional leader installed until elections are organised next year.

Mr Kafando, 72, was chosen by a special panel composed of religious, military, political, civil and traditional leaders.

Negotiations in the capital Ouagadougou continued into the early hours of Monday morning.

Mr Kafando's first task will be to name a prime minister who will appoint a 25-member government.

A story from AP Mobile:
Burkina Faso political transition accord signed

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) - Burkina Faso officials signed a charter on Sunday intended to guide the country toward elections as various factions submitted nominations for an interim head of state to replace longtime President Blaise Compaore, who abruptly stepped down last month.

The signing ceremony took place at the House of the People in the capital, Ouagadougou. Politicians and representatives of the army, civil society and religious and traditional leaders all participated.

An interim president was expected to be named Sunday night and confirmed on Monday, while a new prime minister was expected to be appointed by Wednesday.

Compaore, who served 27 years in office, resigned on Oct. 31 amid mounting opposition to his bid to seek yet another term, fleeing to Yamoussoukro, the political capital of neighboring Ivory Coast. He never identified a potential successor and his departure created a power vacuum in which at least three people tried to assume control of the country in the space of a week.

After suspending the constitution, the military designated Lt. Col. Isaac Yacouba Zida as the transitional leader, though Zida faced intense pressure to restore civilian rule. On Saturday, Zida announced through a spokesman that the constitution had been restored.

"There will be a 'before Oct. 30' and an 'after Oct. 30' in Burkina," Zida said at the signing ceremony on Sunday, referring to the day that anti-Compaore demonstrations escalated dramatically, with protesters setting the parliament building ablaze.

"The insistence and the political myopia of the constitutional revision shook us," Zida added. Condemning what he described as Compaore's abuse of authority, he said the ex-president brought about his own exit by trying to change the constitution so he could run again.

Under the charter signed Sunday, a 90-member transition council will serve as the country's parliament, while the prime minister will head a 25-member government.

The interim president and ministers in the transitional government will be barred from standing in elections expected to be held a year from now.

Burkina Faso army says it will cede power
Aljazeera: Published on 04 Nov 2014

Burkina Faso's army will cede power to a transitional government and appoint a new head of state, Lieutenant-Colonel Isaac Zida, the country's interim president, has said.

"We are going to move very fast, but be careful not to commit a mistake that might damage our country," Zida said on Monday.

"We are not here to usurp power and to sit in place and run the country, but to help the country come out of this situation," Zida said, adding that a new head of state would be chosen following broad discussions with various groups.....

Burkina Faso army to pick 'consensus leader'
Aljazeera: 03 Nov 2014

Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida says executive powers to be led by transitional body that army will watch over carefully.

Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, Burkina Faso's interim leader, has said that the military will cede power to a transition government headed by a "consensus" leader, in a bid to calm accusations that it had seized power in a coup.

"Our understanding is that the executive powers will be led by a transitional body but within a constitutional framework that we will watch over carefully," Zida told a gathering of diplomats and journalists in the capital Ouagadougou, without giving a timeframe for the changeover......

Thanks for posting sab,my only observation is that it gives very little information about the man himself and tries to explain the history of Burkina Faso that appears to have been always run by dictators who rule by oppression, fear and the gun,I do not agree with the "ideals" that are presented by the article are in any way useful to try and begin to form a "Nation".
I am a simple soul who finds it quite difficult to understand the way people behave as I have said before everything is aboutM MONEY,personal enhancement and greed.
I am not qualified to give anything but my own opinion as I see things, other more worthy experts and scholars tend to adopt the talk talk talk principal without ever arriving at a workable fair solution about anything.

Army backs new Burkina Faso leader Isaac Zida

BBC Online:

Burkina Faso military chiefs have backed Isaac Zida as transitional president, an army statement says.

The statement appears to end confusion over who has succeeded President Blaise Compaore, who stood down amid unrest.

Lt-Col Zida appeared on television overnight to announce that he was taking over as head of state.

His move is being seen as a putsch against the military chief of staff, who had declared himself leader moments after Mr Compaore quit.

However, army chief General Navere Honore Traore was a signatory to the new army statement which said: "Lieutenant-Colonel Isaac Zida was chosen unanimously to lead the transition period opened after the departure of president Compaore".....

Burkina Faso's military backs Colonel Zida

Aljazeera Online:

Top army officials say Lieutenant Colonel Issac Zida should lead country after protests forced president to step down.

Burkina Faso's top military officials have thrown their support behind presidential guard Lieutenant Colonel Issac Zida as leader of a transitional government after President Blaise Compaore was forced from power, the Reuters news agency has reported.

The move on Saturday sidelines Compaore loyalist General Honore Traore, the joint chief of staff, who had announced a competing plan to lead the country following Zida's departure.

"Lieutenant Colonel Yacouba Issac Zida has been elected unanimously to lead the transition period opened after the departure of President Blaise Compaore," read a statement issued after military chiefs met to discuss who should take power.

The statement came shortly after Burkina Faso's deposed president reportedly arrived in neighbouring Ivory Coast, less than 24 hours after being forced from power....
