Burkina Faso parliament set ablaze

BBC: Published on 30 October 2014

Protesters angry at plans to allow Burkina Faso's President Blaise Compaore to extend his 27-year-rule have set fire to parliament.

The BBC's Laeila Adjovi in the capital, Ouagadougou, say the city hall and ruling party headquarters are also in flames.

The security forces fired tear gas from a helicopter as a crowd surged towards the presidency.

MPs have suspended a vote to allow Mr Compaore to stand for re-election.

One person has been killed in the protests, reports the BBC's Yacouba Ouedraogo from the capital......

Could this be another indication of an "AFRICAN SPRING" ?

Recent Events in Africa MAY suggest that, because the populations of
MANY African countries are very unhappy at the way things are at the moment and want a "change"

A story from AP Mobile:
Burkina Faso president declares state of emergency

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) - Burkina Faso's leader of nearly three decades declared a state of emergency Thursday, hours after protesters who oppose his bid for another term stormed the parliament and set part of it on fire, marking the greatest threat to his rule since he himself seized power in a coup.

It was not immediately clear where President Blaise Compaore was, nor what restri...

Burkina Faso president refuses to step down
Aljazeera: Published on 31 Oct 2014

Long-time president Blaise Compaore refuses to heed protesters demands, seeking to lead transitional government instead.

Burkina Faso's president has refused to resign in the face of violent protests that posed the greatest threat yet to his 27-year rule, saying instead he will lead a transitional government after parliament is dissolved.

Protesters stormed the parliament building in the capital city of Ougadougou on Thursday and set part of it ablaze in a day of violence around the country aimed at stopping a parliamentary vote that would have allowed President Blaise Compaore to seek a fifth term in office.

In a concession to the protesters, the government withdrew the bill from consideration. But the move did not calm protesters, and General Honore Traore, the army's joint chief of staff, later announced that the government and parliament had been dissolved and a new, inclusive government would be named.

However, the General did not spell out who would lead the transitional government.

At least one person was killed and several others wounded during the unrest, authorities said, and a curfew was put in place from 7 pm to 6 am......

Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore no longer in power, an army spokesman tells demonstrators
Mr Compaore had earlier said he would step down after a 12-month transitional government had ended.

On Thursday, protesters set fire to parliament and government buildings

A story from AP Mobile:
Burkina Faso: 2nd soldier says he's president

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) - The president of Burkina Faso stepped down Friday after protesters stormed parliament and set the building ablaze, ending his 27-year reign and sparking a struggle in the military for control of the West African country.

An army general quickly announced he was filling the vacuum left by departing President Blaise Compaore, but hours later, a colonel made the same declaration.

Col. Yacouba Zida said that he would lead the transition back to democracy in a recorded address posted early Saturday on the website of a national television station.

"While we wait to define in a consensual manner, with all of the political parties and civil society organizations, the contours and composition of this peaceful democratic transition, I will henceforth assume, from today, the responsibilities of the head of this transition and the head of state," he said.

There were signs late Friday that Zida was making a bid for power when he announced that the country's borders had been closed, a transitional committee had been set up and the constitution had been suspended.

But earlier in the day, Gen. Honore Traore, the joint chief of staff, had told a packed room of reporters that he would assume the presidency until elections were called. It was not immediately clear if Traore accepted Zida's announcement Saturday.

No Change there then TOTAL CONFUSION, we will have to wait until the involved factions sort their heads out , I hope that disgruntled sections of the population will not resort to violence amongst each other.

Army backs new Burkina Faso leader Isaac Zida

BBC Online:

Burkina Faso military chiefs have backed Isaac Zida as transitional president, an army statement says.

The statement appears to end confusion over who has succeeded President Blaise Compaore, who stood down amid unrest.

Lt-Col Zida appeared on television overnight to announce that he was taking over as head of state.

His move is being seen as a putsch against the military chief of staff, who had declared himself leader moments after Mr Compaore quit.

However, army chief General Navere Honore Traore was a signatory to the new army statement which said: "Lieutenant-Colonel Isaac Zida was chosen unanimously to lead the transition period opened after the departure of president Compaore".....

Burkina Faso's military backs Colonel Zida

Aljazeera Online:

Top army officials say Lieutenant Colonel Issac Zida should lead country after protests forced president to step down.

Burkina Faso's top military officials have thrown their support behind presidential guard Lieutenant Colonel Issac Zida as leader of a transitional government after President Blaise Compaore was forced from power, the Reuters news agency has reported.

The move on Saturday sidelines Compaore loyalist General Honore Traore, the joint chief of staff, who had announced a competing plan to lead the country following Zida's departure.

"Lieutenant Colonel Yacouba Issac Zida has been elected unanimously to lead the transition period opened after the departure of President Blaise Compaore," read a statement issued after military chiefs met to discuss who should take power.

The statement came shortly after Burkina Faso's deposed president reportedly arrived in neighbouring Ivory Coast, less than 24 hours after being forced from power....

Army promises 'transition body'

BBC: 3rd November 2014

Thanks for posting sab,my only observation is that it gives very little information about the man himself and tries to explain the history of Burkina Faso that appears to have been always run by dictators who rule by oppression, fear and the gun,I do not agree with the "ideals" that are presented by the article are in any way useful to try and begin to form a "Nation".
I am a simple soul who finds it quite difficult to understand the way people behave as I have said before everything is aboutM MONEY,personal enhancement and greed.
I am not qualified to give anything but my own opinion as I see things, other more worthy experts and scholars tend to adopt the talk talk talk principal without ever arriving at a workable fair solution about anything.

Burkina Faso army to pick 'consensus leader'
Aljazeera: 03 Nov 2014

Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida says executive powers to be led by transitional body that army will watch over carefully.

Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, Burkina Faso's interim leader, has said that the military will cede power to a transition government headed by a "consensus" leader, in a bid to calm accusations that it had seized power in a coup.

"Our understanding is that the executive powers will be led by a transitional body but within a constitutional framework that we will watch over carefully," Zida told a gathering of diplomats and journalists in the capital Ouagadougou, without giving a timeframe for the changeover......
