Thanks Momodou. Your above statement have said it all. Those remarks as reported, are a deliberate provocation that have their target audience.
Look at the people who are responding to the remarks. They are the very ones whom the remarks were meant for in the first place. The educated Gambians mostly residing in the diaspora.
Most of those in attendance, I am sure if the video is available, you will see them laughing off the remarks. Though it is not funny, just as Momodou said, most Gambians are clever enough to see them for what they are. Provocation. Distraction. Insensitivity. Prejudice.
Whatever you want to call it, but the dynamics of our culture and the harmonious relationship between our different tribal groupings, will never allow it to transcend to the threshold of being a tribal conflict.
We all know that Mandinka's form the majority tribe in the country. We all know that you will find Mandinka's among the most educated Gambians. We also know that they are a formidable challenge, together with other tribal groupings, to the political incumbency and status quo that prevails presently.
So these kinds of remarks are more political than they are tribal. I hope we can just see them for what they are. |

Well, so, you see, the statement, if it is a quotation, I mean, if it is written as it came from the horse’s mouth - could be interpreted differently, than the one insinuated by the saidman.
So, if and only if, it is not a quotation, then who is peddling tribalism - the saidman or the horse?
Just as Momodou said, there is no PURE BREED in my country - except in the realm of wishful thinking, which does not make it less toxic ... but even more ... you know.

I agree totally with your posting,Gambian culture and ways of doing things are a mystery to an outsider, a Gambian last name does not "belong" to any particular tribe, the common Gambian name CAMARA for instance is used by at least two different tribes,very very confusing to any outsider and beyond their comprehension ,as are their relationships brother sister ,father etc.
The world would indeed be a very dull place if we were all the same.

I am given to understand that the Mandinka tribe has the greatest number of people in The Gambia (if this is incorrect please correct me ) they must be concerned having a President from a tribe with a lesser number of people living in The Gambia a country where tribe is of the utmost importance to all . |

What does the above statement imply ... mathematically it does not mean what it seem to imply. Hence the ratio 1 isto 5 could be interpreted in many ways. The only constant in the relationship is that 5 is bigger than 1.
Fancying 5W to 1M could mean what 1M can do is equal to what 5W can do. Or 1M is equal to 5W in strength. Or it is cheaper to employ 5W than 1M. Or in terms of danger, it is safer to have to do with 5W than 1M … as you can see I am confused by the above statement……heeeeeelp |

JANKO,in resurrecting this topic,you must be on precisely the same wavelength as myself,honestly yesterday I was going to post on this topic myself.The wording of the opening paragraph of this article sums up the feelings of ALL GAMBIANS and is not restricted to H.E. ALL Gambians of EVERY TRIBE have the same feelings such feelings are not the sole prerogative of the Jola OR Mandinka TRIBES,with such ingrained feelings Gambia will find great difficulty in attaining meaningful nationhood.(in my opinion. )

The Civil Service is dominated by four communities who take up more than half of all the jobs, a new government report has revealed.
Members of the Kikuyu community lead the pack, followed by their counterparts from the Kalenjin, Luhya and Kamba communities. Together, they control 58 per cent of the workforce in government ministries, departments and agencies.
