Those who venture to get firewood, charcoal and other products from Casamance have sometimes experienced confrontation with rebels and do claim to pay ransom before being released. Fights between rebels had also affected Gambian villages near the border and armed clashes had been discovered in the Gambia which are created by defeated rebels who cross the border in search of refuge.
