The Sillah Kunda Family in New Yundum in the West Coast Region has renewed ownership of a plot land that is in grip of dispute. The said is situated at Yarambamba surrounded by the cashew trees, They told The Point.
According to Sillah Kunda Family, the disputed plot of land was secured by their father Alhagie Batura Sillah and his Brother Cawuding Sillah through the then alkalo of New Yundum, Karamo Bojang. They explained that their fathers went to the alkalo and told him that they wanted a place for farming where nobody had ever used before. The alkalo later told them that the place was at Yarambamba, where no one had ever farmed because of the old belief that there were some jinns and the place was dangerous.
“However, our fathers had told the alkalo that we are not scared of that, all what we wanted was for you to give us a place. From there, they started to clear the land which was a thick bush and started their farming activities.”
According to the family, they used to clear the said land for farming activities and he had planted more than 100 cashew trees for economic reasons and other farming purposes.
Sillah Kunda Family thus urged the Village Development Committee (VDC) of New Yundum to stay away from the land that belongs to the Sillah Kunda Family. They stated that Sillah Kunda Family are already having their discussions with the government through the Ministry of Lands and Regional Governments.
They made it clear that they have never had any agreement with VDC over the said land.
"We are not here to challenge anyone because the land belongs to the family of Sillah Kunda and the people of New Yumdum know about it," they stated.
According to them, since the time of former President Yahya Jammeh, soldiers at Yundum Barrack would farm next to the Sillah Kunda Family. However, they said, the soldiers never came closer to the land that belongs to the Sillah Kunda Family.
