A non-profit organisation Women Empowerment Project International have supported the Mile 2 Central prison female wing and Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital with towels, toothpaste and brushes, soaps, Omo, combs, perfumes, pats and body creams among others.
President Awa Camara explained that the organisation membership stretches from The Gambia and abroad who conducts monthly contributions and organise fundraising events to support the needy.
She told prison authorities to always knock on their doors for any need, saying they intend to increase the gesture next year.
Public relations officer Kaddy Ceesay said they have previously supported the labor wards of Brikama, Fajikunda and Bakoteh health centers. “We have been also supporting SOS, orphans, needy, mortuaries and mosques.”
Commissioner of operations at the Mile 2 Central Prison Lamin Sowe said no institution needed support more than the prison for the prisoners and thanked donors for their generosity.
Mr. Sowe noted that the visit to prisoners alone was a boost to them, thanking the donors for the gesture. “In our bid to ensure that inmates become productive when they are released, we are partnering with Insight Training Centre and conducted various trainings for the prisoners.”
At Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital, Officer in Charge Foday Jawla thanked the donors for the gesture, saying that there are wealthier people in the country who do not even border to visit them rather than giving them support. Author: Sanna Jallow
