Diagnostic radiology which includes X-ray, Ultrasound, CT Scan etc, constitute about 70% of all hospital diagnostic services. Lack of proper functioning of this equipment's can compromised patient diagnose for proper treatment to conmmence. The radiology services and radiology workforce are facing greater chanllenges in terms of delivering their works, lack of proper and timely maintenance in each equipment breakdown couple with scarcity of consumables like detergents, films, processing chemicals in each department or units had forced many public hospitals to rely or refer patient(s) for diagnose with a cost attached. Bearly 4 months now Gambia hospitals are without CT Scan examination services that will compliment X-ray, ultrasound practices is limited to Physicians, Gynaecologists, Radiologist etc while their already an available trained local radiographers from the University who needs further training on some topics through CPD/CME programs that is tailored with School of medicine and allied health sciences to better equipped them and serve in various hospitals across the country. Further capacity building programs on other modalities like CT Scan, MRI, Digital Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Radiotheraphy, Mammography etc will help the ministry and the governent have already trained workforce who will be the most integral part of any healthcare providers. Establishing international partnership and collaborations with partners in developed countries, to advance these capacity building programs to international standards for Gambia to have advance and improve health services to the general public.
