Eight prison staff arrested ! "so far" appears that there MAYBE further arrests of staff. ====================================================
Monday, August 06, 2018
A total number of 23 prisoners have reportedly escaped during a major prison break at the remand wing of the Jeshwang Prison, The Point can authoritatively report.
However, eight prison officers that were on duties have so far been arrested in connection with the matter.
A source that spoke to our reporter on the condition of anonymity said it was not clear as to how the prisoners escaped. However, our source added that some of the prisoners who escaped were jailed for different offences and they are currently at large.
Currently, our source went on, dozens of security operatives were dispatched for a massive manhunt for the escaped prisoners.
Meanwhile, our source added that investigation is still on-going over the matter. Author: Momodou Jawo

‘Negligence causes Jeshwang prison break’
The Point: Tuesday, August 07, 2018
http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/negligence-causes-jeshwang-prison-break
The spokesman of The Gambia Prison Services has raised eye brows in what is regarded to be one of the major prison breaks in the country’s history.
Spt. Momodou Lamin Ceesay, who was speaking in an exclusive with The Point, blamed the officers on duty for what he called - their negligence resulting in the escape of 23 prisoners at the Remand Wing of the Jeshwang Prison.
“At least if there was push and pull between the prisoners and the officers on duties which may result in the injury of the officers on duty, we will have known that they have tried their level best in arresting them before they escape. The officers are currently detained and helping us on our investigation. They not yet charge but they will be disciplined through the Prison Act.”
The prisoners, Ceesay said, escaped through the roof where the prisoners were kept. “We have to understand that these are old building that needs massive renovation and they have been there since the colonial time,” he stated
The GPS public relations officer (PRO) said out of the 23 prisoners that escaped, 9 of them are juveniles while the other 14 are adults. “One of them has been arrested and is currently detained at the Bundung Police Station as investigation into the matter continues,” he told our reporter in an interview
Ceesay said all the adult prisoners were jailed in connection with possession of drugs, assaults cases, threatening violence, house breaking, conspiracy to commit felony and robbery. “The only one with high charge is Nfamara Jarjusey who is held in connection with rape,”
According to him they are currently working with their securities colleagues in arresting the escaped prisoners, while calling on the general public to help them in that crusade. “All the escaped prisoners are residents of the Greater Banjul Area. However, our preliminary investigation reveals that there was no conspiracy between the officers and the prisoners.”

On Jeshwang prison break
The Point Editorial: Tuesday, August 07, 2018 http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/on-jeshwang-prison-break
Security plays an integral role in the development of any nation. The details surrounding the recent escape of 23 inmates being held in Jeshwang Remand Wing is not only worrying but disturbing. Most of these inmates are under remand custody for a range of offences. Though, a Prison could never be a trouble-free place given the nature and the histories of its inmates, but the number involved in this recent episode is way too high. These runaway prisoners, who are now with us in the community did not only pose security threat, but are danger to the society.
Certainly, this situation simply cannot be allowed to go on, particularly given The Gambia’s increasing security challenges. For instance if those who are apprehended for their involvement in criminal activity are confident that their detention will not last, they will not be deterred from breaking the law. In addressing the immediate short-term resolution of the problem, more attention should be paid to the prison conditions as well.
How it is that prison defenses are so easily breached, from the inside as well as from the outside? How do the inmates get their way out of the prisons?
It is high time The Gambia speeds up the processing of awaiting trial detainees, possibly with legal limits on how long they may be detained without trial.
Prison facilities in many countries are also referred to as correctional facilities, where people are corrected for the offence(s) they committed. The country must seriously consider the viability of non-custodial sentences and other substitutes for prison terms. Not every crime must result in jail term, especially when such jails do nothing to reform inmates or deter them from committing crimes in future. There is no reason why non-violent offences like drug possession cannot be punished by community service, nor does it make sense to lock juvenile offenders up with hardened repeat offenders.
Again, at this crucial time communication is important so as to update the general public on the latest development thus far. But the Prison spokesman is avoiding the media for reasons known to him, which in our view is exacerbating the whole issue.
Communities are often judged by the way they treat those who break their laws, The Gambia must radically reform the way it deals with those who find themselves in its jails if it is to attain the ideal of a truly humane society.

"But the Prison spokesman is avoiding the media for reasons known to him,"
The Prison spokesman is avoiding talking to the media,I have a suspicion that as this incident is of such a serious nature MAYBE he feels that he must liaise with someone further up his management tree, before he speaks,a minister may even make an announcement !

OK.....FIVE REMAND prisoners ARRESTED & DETAINED, states the PRO. leaving THIRTEEN other escapees still on the run, the initial report by Momodou Jawo of The Point (6th August) gave the number as TWENTY THREE ! AS these DETAINEES were held ON REMAND , should they be referred to as PRISONERS ?
I am not the worlds best mathematician, is there an error here ? Whatever, some have been arrested quickly but the majority are still at large.
Its quite confusing,maybe I should become a politician !!! (Naaaaaaaah couldn't cope with that ! )

Five inmates who escaped from Jeshwang Prison last week have been rearrested by the Police anti crime unit on Tuesday, 7 August 2018, Police spokesperson confirms.
According to Superintendent David Kujabi five inmates out of 13 are currently detained at the anti crime unit at the Police headquarters in Banjul.
“We have rearrested five inmates on Monday and are presently helping the investigators with their investigation to track down others,’’ he said.
He said charges are yet to be pressed against the arrested escapees.
Officials from the Prisons Department also confirmed the arrest and detention of eight prison guards. He said the officers are still held as investigation is ongoing.
The Public Relation Officer of Prisons, Superintendent Modou Lamin Ceesay said a total of 23 inmates escaped but five were captured and are the hands of the Police.
It was reported that Eight of the 12 prison guards on duty at the Jeshwang Prisons on the evening of Thursday 3 August were arrested and are helping with investigations into the escape of some 14 inmates. Superintendent of Prisons Modou Lamin Ceesay the PRO of the Prisons department confirms that 8 were the guards directly posted around the cell area and the back of the cells when more than a dozen inmates made an escape using the roof of the main cell.
Mr. Ceesay believes that it happened due to security lapses on those officers who failed while on duty. PRO pointed out another factor that resulted to the escape of the inmates was the very old structure making it easier for the inmates to penetrate.
Foroyaa will further update the general public on developments.

Good job I named this topic as I did,it appears that the police are now really rerious about cleaning up NEW GAMBIA of CRIMINALS and those suspected of engaging in a criminal lifestyle.!!
=====================================================================================================
Monday, August 13, 2018
In another series of crackdown on suspected criminals, personnel of the Anti-Crime Unit (ACU) of The Gambia Police Force (GPF) headed by Chief Supt. Gorgie Mboob, have recently arrested 63 suspected criminals in their routine patrol in the Kanifing Municipality and West Coast Region.
The suspected criminals are currently being detained at the new ACU office located in Bijilo, where they have undergone proper screening processes.
Two out of 63 arrested were part of those prisoners who recently escaped from the Jeshwang Prison. However, 8 among the 63 were believed to be juveniles. They are being held on offences including robbery, stealing, and house breaking among a host of other crimes.
The ACU personnel have also been able to recover lots of items including flat screen TVs, sewing machines, vehicle spraying machines, two live bullets, mobile phones among others items. They are set to appear in court on Monday morning.
Deputy police spokesperson, Foday Conta, has confirmed the development to our reporter. The ACU, he said, was set-up with a view to prevent crimes from happening.
“They were arrested in different locations within the Kanifing Municipality and the West Coast Region (WCR) as the ACU personnel were on their usual patrol. Some of the suspects have records of previous crimes in various stations within the KM and WCR.”
PRO Conta added that a boy who is currently on holiday in The Gambia from the USA is also part of the people arrested by the ACU on robbery issue. Majority of the suspects, he went on, are Gambians while few are Senegalese and others from Guinea Conakry. Author: Momodou Jawo

Here is the Standard take on the arrests.
=====================================================================================================
By Omar Bah August 13, 2018
The Gambia Police Anti Crime Unit recently arrested 63 teenagers in the Greater Banjul Area for alleged armed robbery. ASP Foday Conta of the police public relations department said the 63 teenagers allegedly stole flat TV screens, smart phones and sewing machines amongst other valuable materials. According to ASP Conta, the suspects were alleged have a criminal network headed by a 21-year-old and that some of them have already served jail terms. He said the suspects were armed with live bullets, knives and cutlasses amongst others. Conta said the suspected criminals’ ring leader confessed to the police about some of their criminal activities and that his boys do whatever he orders them.
The leader also told the police that they take cannabis to do their operations. ASP Conta said the ring leader also confessed that they once attempted to attack a police commissioner but they were unsuccessful. “The gang leader also told the police that if they are on their operations, they would attempt to rob even President Barrow if he is on the streets by himself without escort,” ASP Conta told The Standard yesterday via telephone.
Meanwhile, ASP Foday Conta has also raised concern over the rate of teenage offenders, saying the best way to resolve the situation is to transform prisons into correction centers. He called on the community particularly parents to take care of
