In the village of Sabaa in eastern Gambia it is reported that 1 in 8 people have taken the 'Back Way' across the Sahara heading for Europe. In this village where some compounds have running water and satellite dishes ,the elders say that 600 0f the 4000 population have tried the perilous 3000 mile journey to the Mediterranean hoping to get to Europe to find work. The village chief Lamin Singateh says this exodus is destroying the community as people are no longer in the fields farming. He himself went to Spain in 2006 for 2 years finding masonry work that paid 180 Euros a day. He returned choosing family over money.
How many Gambians have left their homeland is not exactly clear. It is reported that Gambians are well-established customers of the people smuggling boats operating out of Libya. In the first quarter of 2015 1 in 7 of the 10000 migrants who crossed the Med were from Gambia.Estimates of the total numbers now abroad run as high as 100,000 with roughly 20,000 in Spain and 7000 in Italy. Britain has received 2284 asylum applications since 2001 with 1557 being refused.
